Drowning of Butte man in Big Hole River during ferry crossing

Timothy J. Sullivan a 38 year old tinsmith and roofing contractor from Butte drowned Sunday afternoon in the Big Hole River near Dewey while crossing on a hand operated ferry. His three young sons watched from the bank as the ferry capsized in high waters from melting snow. Beaverhead and Silver Bow officers led the search with help from ranchers.

Beaverhead County Commission Opens June Session

Beaverhead County commissioners meet June 6 1938 with Thomas Jackson chairman Edgar Rife and clerk Albert Baker present. Discussion includes Home Demonstration Agent placement on a full term basis and county valuation concerns amid a regular monthly meeting agenda.

Local Vets Attend State Legion Convention in Helena

Beaverhead post of the American Legion will be well represented at the state convention in Helena with George M. Gosman and C. J. Horren as delegates and T. Lee McCracken Harold M. Warner as alternates. Other Dillon veterans attending include A. M. Jones C. A. Bechler and Jay V. McCarthy. Beaverhead post has 121 members, close to last year’s record. Edgar Williams of Twin Bridges visited Dillon. Thirty two candidates seek Beaverhead county and township offices in the July 19 primary, four filing last Saturday. Only seven primaries exist with two unopposed candidates in both primary and general. Ballots prepared for absent voters. Former clerk Albert S. Baker has two absentee ballot requests from Denmark for Saturday filings.

Mrs Louise Taylor Dies in Dillon Home

Mrs Louise Taylor died at her daughter in law Ivy Taylors North Pacific street home after a year long illness. She was 80, born January 1 1858 in Surrey New Brunswick Canada and came to Dillon in 1881 after marrying William T Taylor. The couple later moved to Bannack.

Recreation program to start soon in Dillon

A large number of Dillon girls aged seven to eighteen enroll for a free day camp this summer. Enrollment extended through this week with signups on the first day of play Monday June 27. Free medical exams provided by Dillon physicians. Two three week courses offered with option to take entire six weeks. Only full six week enrollees may join rally and water pageant closing feature. Former Dillon Man Killed in Alaska Mine Accident

Louis Anderson former Dillon resident died from a mine accident near McCarthy Alaska last week. He had mined in Alaska many years and lived in the territory for 25 years. Born in Sweden in 1860 he came to the United States as a young man and lived in Beaverhead County before moving to Alaska. His body was flown from McCarthy to Cordova for burial. His sister in law Mrs Cora Anderson reports the death.

Nacation Bible School Held At Dillon Church

A daily Vacation Bible school opened June 13 at the Presbyterian church with 35 in enrollment. Primary class includes 9 girls and 11 boys. junior group 11 girls and 3 boys. Special Swedish weaving class started. program and exhibit planned later.

Beaverhead County Attractions Highlighted in New Booklet

Dillon Chamber of Commerce compiles a 16 page pamphlet promoting Beaverhead county scenery historic sites and industrial resources. The brochure features two maps showing highways to Dillon and local trails with fishing lakes and streams and will be distributed via courtesy stations chambers of commerce hotels and service stations.

Four Dillon Students Lead Normal Honor Roll On List

Four Dillon students are among Montana State Normal College spring quarter honor roll leaders. Patricia Gilbert and Blanche McManus head the list with top grades, followed by Chelsea Bailey, Hiram Lapham, Rachel Smith, and others from Dillon and across the state.

Drum and Bugle Corps Elk Lodge Dance in Dart's Hall

The Dillon Elks drum and bugle corps will sponsor a dance at the drum corps headquarters in Dart's hall on Saturday night June 25 as part of a Beaverhead and Madison counties tour. The event features a sports dance with prizes for best sport costumes and invites to Elk members to bring guests. a recent Twin Bridges dance drew over 150 couples.

Mail Salvaged From Milwaukee Wreck Reaches Dillon Post

Water soaked mail from the Milwaukee's crack Olympian wreck along Custer creek near Miles City arrived at the Dillon post office Monday. The consignments were mostly newspapers and advertising circulars. A lone publicity mat was sent to the Examiner in York, with an address barely legible.

Telephones Subject of Dinner Talk

Alex Remneas of Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner. He described industry research personnel and laboratories where thousands of scientists work to improve service and lower costs. He noted primitive instruments and the large scale of the field, where small research changes can cover laboratory expenses.

Dillon Rainbow Girls Attend State Assembly

Dillon assembly of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls will be represented at the state assembly in Great Falls this week. Delegates Marjorie Decker, Mary Liggett, and Helen Shaffner left yesterday with Mrs. T. E. Luebben and son Tom. They will be joined there by Mrs. Elsie Wayne, mother advisor of the Dillon assembly.

George C. Farrell of Dillon was elected district president of the Odd Fellows at Meaderville with Dillon chosen as next year’s joint Odd Fellows and Rebekahs convention site. Myrtle Norris of Melrose was elected district head of the Rebekahs. Judge H. G. Rodgers spoke, a ravioli dinner followed, and Diana Rebekah lodge installed the new officers.

Matron Bay of Beaverhead Dies at 44

Mrs Jens C Bay a Beaverhead valley matron died at her ranch south of Dillon after a lingering illness She was 44 Born in Denmark April 13 1894 she came to Dillon at age 14 and lived here since Surviving are her husband four children Alvin Clff and Helen of Dillon Edward of Albuquerque NM mother Mrs Elizabeth Hansen of Denmark two sisters Mrs Marie Carlson and Mrs Beline Jule and two brothers Pete Hansen and Matt Hansen Funeral was held Monday.

Dillon and Butte Nines Split Pair

Dillon and Butte Junior Legion nines split the first two games of a three game series. Al Lan Bradley pitched for Butte with 17 strikeouts in a 3-2 Dillon win. Butte answered with a 10-1 victory as Wilson held Dillon to three hits. The deciding game is at the fairgrounds tonight with Bradley and Wilson likely to duel.

Reduced Interest Rate on Loans Extended Two Years

Federal legislation extends reduced interest rates on Federal Land Bank and Commissioner loans for two more years. The 3 1/4 percent annual rate applies to installments due before July 1, 1940, for active loan associations, while direct Land Bank loans stay at 4 percent. Commissioner loans retain a 4 percent rate.

Range in Beaverhead forest praised for good condition

L F Jefferson of Missoula regional forestry and K D Flock of Beaverhead office reported the southern Beaverhead National Forest range in excellent condition after an inspection through Centennial valley and the upper Madison. Grass moisture is ample and fishing conditions improve as the Henrys Lake to Monida road remains excellent.
