Local selective service classifications and Marine Reserve induction noted

The local selective service board lists classifications for several individuals including 3 C H Herbert Schroe der, Edgar French, 4 F Francis O'Brien, Robert Anson, and 1 A Francis Gillman, May, Kingery, Kelly. Doris J. Rogers from Dillon will report June 18 at Hunter College New York for four weeks of indoctrination in the U S Marine Corps Women's Reserves before serving at a Marine base or school. Rogers, Beaverhead County High School alumna active in journalism, is the daughter of Ora Elma Rogers of Yakima Washington. Wilbur G Gilbert Jr 29 from Dillon was commissioned a second lieutenant June 9 at Camp Barkeley Texas after MSU graduation. Dillon lodge No 16 A F & A M held Past Masters night at the Masonic hall with over 100 Masons present including visitors from Lima Wisdom and Twin Bridges A banquet preceded the meeting where Dr. R D Curry spoke and Master Mason degree work was conducted Past masters filled chairs with Matt Kay as worshipful master and a full slate of officers.

Recreation schedule fixed for city children this summer

The city opened its summer recreation program for grade school children, detailing daily slots from Monday to Saturday. Activities include music, Spanish, arts and crafts, plays, fancywork, and girls' swimming, with separate time blocks for different grade groups.

Mrs Price Dies In Seattle After Long Beaverhead Ties

Elizabeth Price longtime Beaverhead County resident died at her Seattle home on Monday June 7 at age 83. widow of L J Price former district court clerk and founder of Price real estate and insurance survived by daughter Mary in Seattle and sons Fred Casper Wyoming Richard Miles City and Lawrence Rapid City with three granddaughters. Funeral services and interment were in Seattle.

Beaverhead county registrants are summoned for the July contingent. Induction reports set for June 30 with travel to the induction center in Butte the next day. Beaverhead County Seeks Donations For Mon State Normal College Cadet Subsidy

Beaverhead county residents are asked to donate to a war service fund to aid Mon State Normal College enrollment as cadet students or via military sponsorship. A county committee met June 4 to plan a Washington representation and full college data. Donations may be left with B. Agecaranee. Sheep shearing is weeks behind due to rain and snow, delaying haying. recent weather improvements promise better clip quality and quantity.

Arnold Benson auction sale draws large crowd near Dillon

A large crowd attended the Arnold Benson auction at the old Carter Ranch north of Dillon. The sale, held today, featured many farm implements and was expected to be one of the best attended in years. Luther Smith acted as auctioneer and A. G. Williams served as clerk.

Beaverhead Youth Dies in Jap Prison Camp

Word reaches Beaverhead that Jimmy Judge, beloved local youth and U S Army veteran, died Friday June 11 in a Japanese prison camp. His mother Mrs Mary Judge, recently notified in Missoula, earlier received a letter from him. Judge had served in the Philippines under General MacArthur and was captured at or after the fall of Bataan. The community is grieved by the tragic loss.

Members of the May contingent of selectees their wives and parents and service men were guests of the local Citizens' committee at a banquet Sunday evening at 6 30 at the White Cafe. J E Kelly presided as toastmaster and W G Gilbert delivered the address of the evening.

Montana county commissioners invited to Dillon for 1944 convention

The Dillon Chamber of Commerce extended an invitation to the State Association of County Commissioners to hold its 1944 convention in Dillon. The invitation was presented by Archie C. Henneberry, with O. A. Bergeson attending as welfare board chairman.

Rotary Ladies Night to Feature Melville Speaker at Dillon Club

Chancellor-elect Ernest O. Mel by of the University of Montana will address the Dillon Rotary Club at a ladies night dinner. The event is set for 7 o clock in the Normal college dining room with reservations through secretary Thomas E. Gilbert. Ed Buck spoke for the club thanking Al Erickson for his Rotary service before leaving for active U S duty. He received a gift from Joe Wedum as Parke Scott and Bill Tayne attended with Frank Tyre chairing.

Dillon Man Arthur Brown Dies After Long Illness

Arthur Brown 61 of Dillon died Saturday morning at home after 27 years of invalidism. Born January 23 1882 in Macon Missouri he moved to Dillon in 1915. Funeral services were held at Brundage chapel with Rev L D Smith officiating and burial in Mountain View cemetery. Surviving are his wife a daughter and son in law Mrs J Emerson Hughes of Horse Prairie a grandson Denton two brothers and their wives Grover Brown Dillon and J H Brown Clarksville Missouri and several nieces and nephews. Mrs L W Cottrell a sister in law attended services.

Resident of City Since 1888 Passes in Dillon

Fred E. Boger aged 75 longtime Dillon resident died Thursday at Murray hospital in Butte after emergency operation. Born in Germany on June 8 1868 he came to the U S as a boy and moved to Beaverhead county in 1888. He retired 30 years ago and lived in Dillon until his death. Funeral held Monday at the chapel with Rev Father F X Lechner of St Rose Catholic church officiating interment in Mountain View. survivors include widow four grandchildren and four children in Colorado Iowa Idaho and Dillon.

Pioneer of Beaverhead Claimed as Early Rancher William Sweeney

William Sweeney prominent Beaverhead rancher in the Sheep creek country died Saturday night at Barrett hospital after a 10 day illness from pneumonia. A Beaverhead resident 45 years, he was born December 24 1866 in Titusville Pennsylvania and later lived in Wellsville New York. He moved to Montana in 1898 and joined E W Rogers in the Sheep creek basin. their partnership lasted until Rogers death in 1938.

Beaverhead county sent a June contingent of selectees to Fort Douglas Utah for official induction into the U S Army. Lester Kurtz chaired the group as corporal in charge during induction at Butte two weeks earlier. War Board Seeks Price Ceilings for War Model Cookers
