Recreation Parks Plan Proposed by City Council

William Wright 76 Dies After Lima Resident Passes

William Wright, 76, a Lima resident for 15 years, died last Saturday morning. Remains were sent to Winlock, Wisconsin, for funeral services and interment. He was a native of Mississippi and had spent most of his life farming. Survived by his nephew James Wright, a daughter, and Mrs. Jack Dodson, plus other nieces and nephews in Washington.

Community Committee Meets At Courthouse For War Service Effort

The 12th annual APSL national Latin exam results show Beaverhead County High School students first year participants. Latin One scorers include Knapp 100, Shirley McFadden 102, Luebben 106, Tovey 109. Latin Two: Davis 100, Spence 103, Banks 100, Anderson 109. all scored at least 82. The test awarded Magna Cum Laude to top Latin One and Two students.

Longtime Beaverhead Resident Fred Oliver Dies

Fred Oliver of Beaverhead county died Monday at a Madison hospital after a brief illness. A resident since 1880, he worked on ranches and in the city, served 15 years on the city police force, and ran a small restaurant on North Idaho street. He is survived by his son Ted in the U S Army, a daughter in Idaho Falls, a sister in San Francisco, a brother Delos Oliver, and a niece, with burial planned at Mountain View Cemetery after funeral at Mage Chapel led by Rev. Leonard Thompson.

Employment Office here Is Success

The U S Employment Office in Dillon, under Alex Scotty Tait, reports 51 applications from May 10 to May 31 with 44 placed in satisfactory jobs. Thirty of the placements are in agriculture and 14 in non agricultural fields. Ranchers are urged to call for help. services are free. The Dillon office covers Beaverhead County and the western half of Madison County.

Dillon Elks Flag Day Service at High School Auditorium

Dillon Elks Lodge will hold its Flag Day service Monday June 14 at 8:00 p.m. Exalted Ruler William Lloyd announces Anaconda's Id G. Stewart will deliver the address. Senator Thomasse Gilbert and Hewitt Martinell with Jean Staudenmeyer will present patriotic selections and the pledge will be led by the Exalted Ruler.

Beaverhead Officials at Butte Meet on Juvenile Delinquency

Beaverhead county officers including Sheriff John Troupe and Deputy Chester Buckingham joined Prin D L Johnson and County Superintendent Margaret Sweeney at a Butte meeting arranged with the FBI. Attendees discussed how wartime conditions heighten juvenile distress, noting defense areas are more affected than less congested centers.

Former Kalamazoo Teacher Eleanor Troxell Dies at 68

Miss Eleanor Troxell 68 former primary supervisor at Dillon training school died recently at her Kalamazoo home. She left Dillon twenty years ago and served fifteen years as elementary supervisor in Kalamazoo schools retiring about a year ago. An authority on primary education she authored several children's books.

Benson Ranch Auction Set Near Dillon Next Wednesday

One of the region’s major farm auctions will be held at Arnold Benson ranch six miles north of Dillon on the Twin Bridges road. Beaverhead selectees bound for Fort Douglas will be honored at a 6 30 p m Sunday dinner. Softball league opens with Legion routing Elks at Glendale

The boys league opened last Friday as the Legion defeated the Elks 20 to 7 with B Hastings shining on mound and at plate. The Elks then lost 7 to 6 to Kiwanis in a tight finish after leading 6 to 5 late. The women’s league held its first workout with low turnout at Glendale field due to conflicting dates. The season opens June 21.

Annual 4 H Club Baby Beef Show Hits Record Prices

Beaverhead county’s annual 4 H club baby beef show and sale drew a record crowd and high prices. Bruce Jardine’s 870 pound grand champion sold for 27 cents a pound to Hansen Packing of Butte, also earning him a merchandise prize and showmanship awards. Other top buyers and show prizes are listed, with buyers from Butte and Dillon acknowledging strong support from the community.

Funeral of Dillon Pioneer Roscoe Cornell Held

Services for Roscoe Cornell former Dillon mayor and prominent Beaverhead rancher were held at the Masonic hall with Dillon lodge A F and A M conducting. Interment followed at Mountain View cemetery. Summer school opened at the Normal College with registration and classes underway serving diploma graduates former teachers and recent high school graduates.

Rotary Club Hosts Beaverhead 4-H Guests at Luncheon

Beaverhead county 4-H members, parents and friends were guests at the Dillon Rotary Club luncheon at the Wilbur cafe. Albert Erickson presided as chairman and Paul Orcutt of Montana State College spoke on baby beef show results and the need to boost livestock production amid war conditions. About 50 attended.

Beaverhead County Reports Record Low Tax Delinquency

Beaverhead County treasurer Evelyn Lloyd announced the delinquency figure after the payment deadline of June 1. Unpaid taxes totaled 2,242.07 from 84,946.51 assessed, with 82,704.44 paid. Last year 3,919.06 remained due after the second half period.

Purple Heart Awarded to Dillon Soldier in Action
