The Beaverhead board of county commissioners met in regular session Monday June 5 1933 with agenda including road matters and emergency declaration for payment of insurance premiums Requisitions and routine items were discussed as the June meeting continued on page 4
Enrollment for the Montana State Normal College summer term reaches 366 today with expected growth. The 1932 term totaled 379, and this year should mirror that figure. On opening day 339 students enrolled. many are former students teaching during vacation to pursue degrees. The nine week term offers regular courses plus advanced studies in dramatics English and arts taught by three former instructors. A welcome reception for new students is planned Friday evening at the dormitories.
A high class wild west rodeo directed by Jim Johnson and Jim Campbell is set for Glen next Sunday as the first of Johnsons two shows. The event features bucking contests calf roping steer riding bareback riding bulldogging and other events plus a horse quad ride. Dances planned for Saturday and Sunday with good music and county attendance expected. Warren Graeter and family of Deer Lodge visited the Poindexter home last week.
James Vigeant known as Jimmy the Tink was found dead in his Dillon lodging house room last Friday morning. A long time resident born February 20 1858 in Canada he moved to Montana as a young man and settled in Dillon in 1885 after earlier years in Silver Bow county. He had been ill for several days and died likely of a heart attack during the night.
The plan, approved by the Secretary of Agriculture, ties national forest grazing fees to livestock market prices. Tuesday June 20 proclaimed Good Roads Day in Montana by Governor Frank H. Cooney who urges citizens to contribute to highway improvements. The governor notes progress in highway safety and permanence and hopes the day is observed suitably.
Dr Sheldon E Davis of Montana State Normal College will deliver the principal address at the Flag Day program tonight at 7 15 oclock on the Oregon Short Line depot lawn Dillon Ells will host John T Orr past exalted ruler will outline the flag history Boy Scouts will parade banners of every period in the nations history Music will include The Star Spangled Banner and Columbia the Gem of the Ocean performances by Ellis quartet and Dale Metlen choir Altar service will be by Esquire Matt Kau and officers
Two Dillon boys Jack and Matt Orr are subjects of a children’s book titled Jack and Matt of the WX written by Kathryn Van Noy and Elinor Hedrick former Normal college instructors. The book has been named a Junior Literary Guild selection and centers on the Orr family of this city.
Beaverhead post of the American Legion members rode to Butte for the mining district veterans convention. District Commander B L Fairbanks presided with District Finance Officer R D Curry in attendance. Delegates included Commander Parke T Scott and D V Paddock, with J C Fuller accompanying. Mrs D V Paddock and Mrs E L Fairbanks attended the auxiliary district meeting, the former as delegate.
Last week two Southwestern Montana wool clips set a state record at 26 cents per pound. Bert Scott of Dell and Peter N. Anderson of Alder sold to Harriett Tooley of Harlowtown, Montana the state's only woman wool buyer, Mrs. Tooley.
Professor Robert E H Bright spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner on the new federal industrial control bill. He noted proposals aiming to reduce inflated business organization costs and ensure steadier business continuation, signaling a long discussed measure.
Beaverhead County superintendent Miss Nell Doyle announced that 29 eighth graders and 25 seventh graders from rural schools completed state examinations. The report lists seventh graders Floyd Pahnish Bannack Mary Sweeney Nicholla Clifford Birrer Gosman Joe Mansfield Grant Ruth Fairbank Doyle Dorothy Waldemar Grant Alvaretta Hand Reichle James Fleming Dell Leo Flint Lakeview Teddy.
The Dillon volunteer fire department rodeo and a trapshoot by the Dillon Gun club will headline activities for the Montana Elks association state convention in Dillon. August 10 11 and 12 were announced by E L Wheat secretary of the Dillon lodge and convention committee chair. The firemen's event follows a successful show last year praised as among the best in the city, rivaling the famed pow wow roundups.
The Beaverhead Mining Association will hold its annual business meeting at the court house next Saturday evening at 7 30 o clock. President William Logan announced the gathering urged all past and present members to attend for important mining industry business.
A benefit dance will be held in Lima next Saturday night to aid St. Rose parish. Father Timo thy Clifford announced the event, with music by the Baxter Tonney orchestra of Dillon, drawing many Dillon residents and attendees from across the southern part of the county.
David Kilroy of Butte spent the week end at the home of his sister, Mrs. Annabel Morrison.
State Purchasing Agent J E Murphy announced contracts to supply about 16 000 tons of coal for state institutions for the coming year at a total of roughly 60 000 dollars. The Roundup Coal Mining company will furnish steam coal for the state school for the deaf and blind and the state vocational school for girls, plus lump coal for the state prison. Bair Collings company of Roundup will supply steam coal for Montana State College with H M Yaw and Company of Great Falls also involved.
A two day rodeo will be held at George Roe ranch a mile south of Lima on July 8 and 9. Bill Gray, veteran rider from Beaverhead County, will manage the event promising a high class program.
Scores of Beaverhead and Madison county residents attended a Farmers' Union picnic at Dillmont Park last Sunday under the union's local unit. The program featured ball games races and other sports while A G Egley manager of the Farmers' Union Livestock Exchange in St Paul spoke on agricultural matters.
A two year pursuit ends as L Sheftel is captured in Dallas Texas on fraud and bad check charges from Beaverhead county. Deputy Sheriff Barry travels from Helena after extradition papers are secured. Sheftel posed as a cattle buyer and used a dodgy draft on Hampton Livestock of Los Angeles to pay for cattle from the Gludich ranch near Dillon.
Governor Cooney reappointed Maggie Smith Hathaway of Stevensville as secretary of the state bureau of child protection for a term ending June 1, 1937. The 1925 appointee's third term followed prior reappointments by Governor Erickson. G. Link of Billings was named to the state board of architectural examiners to replace George Shanley. W R Plew of Bozeman and Fred A Brinkman of Kalispell were also reap pointed for terms ending March 27, 1937. A. H. Eiselein of Boulder was appointed to the executive board of the state school for the deaf and blind for the term ending April 19, 1937, pending education board approval.
The Beaverhead Post announces preparations for Vigilante Day celebrations next month as a standout holiday event. Local officials expect community participation and festive activities across town.
An anniversary of lesser notice in Montana will be celebrated Monday July 3 by the Beaverhead post of the American Legion. Vigilante day will commemorate the founding of the daring and intrepid band of men.
