Popularity Contest Nominations For Vigilante Day

Bea verhead post reveals nominees for the Vigilante Day popularity prize to be awarded Monday evening at Dillmont Park. Voting occurs at the park and the winner receives the prize. Nominations include Dillon, Miss Elizabeth Ballard, Miss Anna Mautz, Miss Ethel Jean Davis, Miss Mary Ruth Simpson, Miss Beatrice Bayers, and Miss Virginia Backus.

Racing meet planned at Fair Grounds July 3 and 4

Dillon will host a racing meet at the fair grounds on July 3 and 4 with Scott Halliburton as manager. Competitors include top horses from Idaho Canada and Montana as part of a week of racing events. In unrelated news Claude Vance A A Mangus and Roy Ottie fled Beaverhead county jail again Sunday night and remain at large as a dragnet covers Montana and neighboring states.

Avocations Topic Talk At Dillon Rotary Meeting

Prof. Lee R. Light of Normal College spoke on avocations at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner. He cited Stanford bulletin ideas about meaningful leisure and noted avocations as vital to education, earnings, and well being, stressing indoor, self-supporting pursuits as practical.

Spring Term Honor Roll At College

William Chance of Square Butte heads the spring quarter honor roll of the Montana State Normal college with an average of three grade points per credit on 18 credits. Georgia L. Thorson of Springdale is second, Genevieve Squires of Dillon third, Charles Martin of Stanford fourth, and Elizabeth Arganbright of Moccasin fifth. Twelve Beaverhead county students earned places on the major honor roll, with four more named on the secondary list for those carrying less than a normal program.

Louis Schmittroth Elected President of Beaverhead Mining

Louis Schmittroth was elected president of the Beaverhead Mining association at the annual meeting in the county courthouse. William Logan became vice-president, Pearl I. Smith secretary, and Joe C. Fuller treasurer. William Corbett was named Argenta district representative on the board. other directors were re elected. Carl Trauerman of Butte spoke on mining conditions, predicting gold and silver will drop to about 60 cents.

Loans to refinance farm debts offered countywide

Farmers in this county may gain relief as the Farm Loan Commissioner plans to make loans through the Beaverhead Madison National Farm Loan Association. Loans up to 5000 dollars can refinance existing debts with 75 percent loan-to-value, using first or second mortgages on farm property and crops, with no principal payments in the first three years if not required.

Butte Woman Hurt As Winds Tear Through Montana

Mrs Walter Crist wife of a Montana typewriter dealer sustained facial and arm cuts when a car was hit by a whirlwind Saturday. Debris shattered the windshield showering her and she received treatment at Barrett hospital in Dillon. A miniature tornado also damaged northern Dillon that afternoon.

Butte Trapshoot Leads With Joe Latimer 99x100

Joe Latimer of Butte posted 99 out of 100 to lead the trapshoot at the Dillon Gun Club on Sunday. Ted Renfro and W. E. Tallent tied for second with 98, followed by Pete Westergaard 97 and Hap Apgar 96. Roy Forrester scored 72 in singles and Dr. E. G. Free led doubles with 48.

Dillon Records Hottest June Day With 94 Degree Peak

Dillon residents endured a heat wave last Friday as the city reached 94 degrees, a near record for the month. Official observer J. E. Monroe notes the heat continues this week with crops suffering from the prolonged dry spell and ranchers reporting stressed grass.

Fin Watson Takes Charge of P. and R. Repair Shop

Mining Claim Can Be Held by New Bill

Butte Montana June 17 For the second consecutive year mining claims may be held without assessment work under a bill signed by President Roosevelt. Owners who were exempt from federal income taxes in 1932 may file a notice of intention to keep the claim to avoid work from July 1, 1932 to July 1, 1933. The law may require resumption of work if further legislation is not enacted.

Forests Grow Dry Warns Beaverhead Official

Beaverhead National Forest faces extreme dryness from hot weather and daily high winds. Supervisor A A Simpson warns motorists campers and others as fires threaten. A blaze near Bannack burned over 40 acres before controls. Fires on West Medicine Lodge and Little Sheep Creek were extinguished.

The Dillon Elks lodge continues a county series with a Saturday night dance at Reichle in the Glen. Dillon bills sponsors the event with the Elks orchestra providing music. Previous dances drew record crowds and Saturday is expected to follow suit with many locals planning to attend.

Sheftel Sentenced for Fraud in Dillon Case

Pleaded guilty to fraud and received two and a half years in state prison from Judge Lyman H. Bennett in district court. L. Sheftel was brought back to Dillon after arrest in Dallas followed by a two year manhunt. He allegedly passed a worthless draft to pay for cattle bought from the Gladici ranch near Dillon two years ago, cattle later sold after being diverted to Ogden en route to Los Angeles.

Butte Dillon Freight Rates Reduced Today

Rates on several freight classes between Butte and Dillon on the Oregon Short Line were cut effective today announced by Agent Harry Baumberger. The reduction is about 20 percent in most cases. Baumberger also announced passenger train time changes, effective last Monday, with trains arriving in Dillon as No 31 at 6 32 p m No 29 at 7 30 a m No 30 at 12 45 p m and No 32 at 8 28 p m.

Former Montana Normal College Student Dies by Suicide

Violet Lantta, 27, a former student of Montana State Normal College at Red Lodge, leaped from Rock Creek bridge last Monday. Her body was recovered a mile downstream. She recently taught school several terms and worked in Butte for two years where her sister Sylvia Lantta lives. funeral held in Red Lodge.
