Vigilante Day to be celebrated July 3 in Dillon

Vigilante Day festivities at Dillmont Park on Monday July 3 revive frontier life with Beaverhead post organizing an old fashioned celebration. Prizes include 25 for the most popular dancer and 15 for any winner exploring Grasshopper Gulch. Carnival scenery features historic sites Yankee Flat Marysville China man Gulch Road Agent Rock and others. Activities run from evening into the next morning drawing crowds from across southwestern Montana.

Honor Roll Top Students At Junior High

Betty Jo Jeppson led both the semester and the last period honor rolls at the junior high school. Paul Simons was second in the semester list and Ruth Helen Albright led the last period. The first lists were announced this week.

Pre-school Roundup Examines Local Children

Barrett hospital hosted the annual pre-school roundup under the Dillon Parent- Teachers association with 40 children examined by E. G. Free and W. H. Stephan. County Nurse Luella Stickney and Mrs. George M. Gosman led the event, part of a national effort to ensure entering students are in good physical condition.

Caretaker at Grounds Appointed

Beaverhead county board met in regular June session and appointed Bill Dongan as overseer at the county fair grounds. Sheriff W C Orr named him a deputy to complete his powers, and he will serve in that capacity without pay.

Mrs. Harry Black Receives Master’s Degree at State U

Mrs. Harry Black of this city was awarded her master’s degree at the annual commencement of the state university in Missoula yesterday. She is an instructor at the Normal college training school and earned the degree by attending during summer vacations. Her thesis, completed this spring, analyzed teaching methods.

Elks Plan Dell Dance In Dillon Saturday

Dillon Elks sponsor the fourth in a series of community dances at Dell next Saturday evening with a large crowd expected. Many local people plan to attend and music will be by the Elks orchestra.

Eastern youths arrive to build Wise River Highway camp

Nearly 200 eastern workers reach Beaverhead county to join the Wise River reforestation camp. A group of 25 men from New York City and 160 from Newark, New Jersey, arrive to staff the project under army discipline. The crew will construct a new mountain highway from Elkhorn mine to Elkhorn Springs. 15 local Beaverhead men are also employed.

Bankers Hold Their Annual Session Here in Dillon

Members of Montana Bankers' Association Group Six gathered in Dillon for their annual convention with about 40 visitors. W W Jamesson of Anaconda was elected president, S Wilkinson of Dillon moved to the executive council, J J Burke of Butte became vice president, and J W Bowman of Anaconda took a new role as secretary treasurer. A W Robert of Whitehall joined the state nominating committee. The next meeting is expected in Anaconda.

Two County Rodeos Slated Next Month in Beaverhead

Two rodeos of notable importance are planned in Beaverhead County next month under Jim Johnson of Jackson. The Glen event on June 18 and the Jackson event on July 4 will feature bucking contests calf roping and steer riding with similar programs at both sites.

Shovelers Open Big Hole Road in Hamilton

Hamilton men opened Big Hole road after shoveling 10 inches of snow for over a mile. They drove the first car over for the 1933 season, earlier than typical May 15 opening due to a long winter. The snow filled the road for about two and four days, delaying normal access.

Eight to Receive Degrees at Montana State Normal College

Eight degree recipients and 87 two year diploma students will graduate at the Montana State Normal College commencement Friday at 10 am in the college auditorium. Chancellor M A Dramond will give the address The Great Teacher. Degree candidates include Frances Drown Kenneth Kins Anna Mautz Jean Meeke Cora Perry Mildred Schuler Duane Taft and Georgia Thorson. The weekend featured the junior prom with yellow and lavender decor and a grand march led by William Chance and Hiny Larson. Baccalaureate services were held Sunday morning with Dr Davis speaking.

Local Bridge Olympic Winners Announced

Local bridge players were named winners of the 1938 World Bridge Olympic after a committee comparing local play results with the National Bridge Association sheet declared winners. North South leaders were Mr and Mrs EB Poindexter and Mr and Mrs W G Gilbert tied for first with five pars. Mrs W H Mitchell and Mrs H N Tragitt followed with four pars.

Dillon Veterans to Attend Zone Meeting in Butte

Beaverhead post of the American Legion will be represented at the mining district convention in Butte next Saturday by Commander Parke T. Scott and D. W. Paddock. District Commander Earle Fairbanks of Dillon will preside at 2:30 PM at the American Legion hall. Officers and parade plans, banquet at 7:30 PM at the Silver Bow club, and mayoral welcome by Archie McTaggart are noted.

Wise River Rodeo Draws Record Crowed

A record crowd of about 1,000 gathered at Wise River for Bea verhead county’s first rodeo of the year featuring Fred Gill’s wild west show. Bob Ferguson won the feature packing contest amid spirited competition from Montana’s top riders on challenging horses. Calf roping, bareback riding, steer riding and other events filled the program and kept the crowd excited from start to finish.

Federal Road to Salmon Rotary Topic

Dillon Rotarians at the Metlen hotel discussed a proposed project linking Salmon with the main north south highway through Beaverhead county. Forest Supervisor A A Simpson outlined the plan and Commissioner W B spoke on the topic during the weekly dinner.

Dillon club shooters take part in a registered trapshoot at the Butte Gun club. Bob Poore of Butte wins with 96x100, C L Flannigan of Great Falls 96x100, Roy Forrester 94, J N Apgar 92, Dr E G Free leads doubles 49x60 and singles 46x60. Other scores include Emery Smith 86x100 and Pete Westergaard 63x76. State shoot set for July 14 to 16 in Butte.

Big Hole Basin Lions Aid With Convention in Butte

The Big Hole Basin Lions will assist the Butte Lions Club in entertaining delegates for the district convention to be held in Butte Thursday through Saturday. Jim Johnson of Jackson heads the effort with the parade featuring a horse owned by Dave Hirschey that led a Butte parade 17 years ago, and J. P. Lossl of Wisdom will portray a prospector leading the procession.

Legion Auxiliary Broadcast Delights Beaverhead Unit

The Beaverhead unit of the American Legion aired a Sunday afternoon KGIR Butte program featuring Nellie Little Poole piano pupils. Performers included Dorothy Groshean Hazel McGrath Genevieve Green Jud Best with pieces such as Among the Pines Home Sweet Home Russian Rhapsody and Grand March. The half hour concert also included an address by Berniece Metlen.
