About 200 Montana postmasters and wives from across the state gathered in Dillon for a two day Montana Postmasters Association convention. Sixteen Post Office Department officials attended as delegates toured Virginia City and joined a President's Party at the Andrus hotel with National Committeeman Ernest Collette.

Pioneer Woman Anna Mansfield Dies at 91 in Dillon

Anna P Mansfield 91 pioneer matron of Beaverhead county and mother of James Mansfield rancher died Saturday at Christian Rest Home Dillon after a year of illness. Born February 11 1866 in Ireland she moved to Montana in early 1880s and married James Mansfield in 1887. Survivors include her son James Mansfield daughter-in-law Ella Mansfield of St Louis six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Requiem Mass was held at St Rose Catholic Church Dillon with rosary the prior evening. Burial followed in Mountain View Cemetery.

Portland Post Office Leader Samuel G Schwartz to Speak

Samuel G. Schwartz 54 of Portland will be principal speaker at the Montana postmasters banquet, closing the association’s two day convention here. He directs the Portland Regional Office of the US Post Office. Schwartz, born May 6 1903, joined the service in 1921 and has 36 years of experience including fraud investigations and post office inspections.

Dillon Jayceens Earn State Awards at Kalispell

At the state convention in Kalispell Jayceens from Dillon received multiple honors. Delegates Clara Hazelbaker and Merle Brown reported on the convention, with Dillon winning the Celia Mae Grist award for outstanding Jayceen club and top placements in membership, scrapbook, profit making, ways and means, and civic improvements. New officers installed June 1 at Lyons Den: Fay McCracken president, Peggy Wickham vice president, Wilma McCart secretary, Rosalee McCormick treasurer.

11th Boys State caps delegates at 340 for 1957 session

The 11th annual Boys State at Western College in Dillon runs August 17 to 25 with 340 delegates. Ted Hazelbaker, state director, said 26 sponsorships were turned down due to quota limits and that the next year may see a 400-cap. Delegates form parties and elect officials from city to governor, with officials addressing them during the sessions. The traditional trip to Virginia City marks the opening, followed by a Beaverhead Chamber barbecue.

Neighbors Raze Fire-Damaged Home on South Idaho Street

Fire caused by defective wiring damaged the rear of the Hill residence on South Idaho. A volunteer work party from Dillon and the Big Hole, including friends who once lived there, turned out with full equipment to raze the fire damaged home of Mr and Mrs Ross Hill.

Barrett Hospital Auxiliary reported a highly successful sale of donated household furnishings. Proceeds to be held for a major project after discussion by hospital board directors and local doctors. A pediatrics ward contetta bed was bought with funds from Dillon Jayceens. remaining funds to curtain beds in obstetrics. Public thanks to named members and helpers for moving heavy fans.

Auxiliary Chooses Delegate to State Convention

Mrs Christine Rodgers president of the Dillon unit of the American Legion Auxiliary will be the official delegate to the state convention this month in Helena. Rodgers has been selected to serve on the Girls State staff at Montana State College in Bozeman June 23 30. Dillon delegates to Girls State include Gayle Wheat and Vida Flanders sponsored by the Auxiliary. The Girls State committees with Mrs Lory Cochrane as chair served refreshments after the installation of officers at the regular meeting. Gold Star Mothers and Sisters were guests of honor with attendees listed and each given a corsage. Mrs Ann Fuller presented a past president pin to Mrs Helen.
