Brig. Gen. S. H. Mitchell, Montana adjutant general, ordered 15 draft boards to determine per board calls for the first draft since the Korean crisis. About 300 Montanans aged 19 to 25 will be examined, with roughly four examinations per man selected. Montana’s total quota to date stands at 74.
The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology releases Memoir No. 30 by E William Heinrich on sillimanite deposits near Dillon Montana. The report covers a previously unknown non metallic mineral occurrence in the Ruby range Bea verhead Madison county line with geology descriptions maps and photographs. Copies are available from the bureau in Butte for one dollar each.
Forewarns of global spread of Communism. Recounts Cairo 1943 and Potsdam 1945 statements on Korea freedom. notes Soviet entry, MacArthur order, and 38th parallel role. Describes Moscow 1945 plan for a provisional government and joint U S Soviet commission to guide democratic trusteeship and development.
Fred E. Dingley 86, Beaverhead County rancher, died Monday after 64 years in the area. Born October 16, 1863 in Lewiston Maine, he moved to Barretts Station in 1886 to work for his uncle Simeon Estes and later owned a local ranch. He had no spouse. Survived by two sisters Mrs Nellie Scott and Miss Grace Dingley of Woburn Mass and several nieces and nephews. Body at Brundage chapel awaiting arrangements.
Beaverhead county Montana officials met July 21 1950 to complete the official canvass of votes from the July 18 Primary Nominating Election. Commissioners Parke Scott Harry Helming Norman Giles and Clerk Margaret Thompson presided as county canvassers. The tally covered numerous offices including Representative in Congress State Treasurer Railroad and Public Service Commissioners and county offices. A third official canvass statement was prepared with full returns on page 5.
Rotary club Monday evening welcomed new Rotarian Martin Rahl. Speaker Walter Sagunsky of Sheridan discussed Montana honey industry, bee history, and apiary duties, with questions from members signaling strong interest. Attendees included Wade Lewis of Boulder Drumey of Seattle R. M. Gregg D. Patton Dillon and President Frank Hazelbaker.
Beaverhead County Youth Fair adopts theme Tis Better to Build Boys Than to Mend Men by Horace Heidt with permit. Kids Parade starts Aug 18 for under 21s traveling through Dillon with ponies bicycles wagons and pets. Entry forms printed in Examiner each Wednesday. Forty one local businesses have contributed to the fair effort.
The National Safety Council of the U S Bureau of Mines will stage a free demonstration titled Magic of Fire in the Dillon court room on Thursday evening August 3 1950. The show promises wide appeal to miners businessmen housewives students and the general public with actual gas explosions performed before the audience in safe controlled conditions.
Dillon city baseball sits tied for first in the tri county league midway through 1950 with Drummond and Elliston each at four wins and one loss. Sunday July 30 at Vigilante field at 2 p m Dillon hosts Elliston to attempt to seize sole leadership. Public welcome with no admission. hats are passed during play. Scout Kiss Rigler observes Sam Davis Floyd Vandegrift and Larry Holloran. Merchants beat Garrison 15 4 last week on 21 hits and five errors.
Dillon rodeo concessions awarded to Ivan Stubban with all concession rights secured except program sales by the Girl Scouts. Entrance fees for events set at $15 and must be paid by 8 p.m. September 2, 1950.
Patrick ONeil aged 76 died Sunday at the county hospital after a long illness. A longtime ranch hand in Beaverhead county, he had lived here for 25 years. No surviving relatives are known. Brundage Funeral Home arranged funeral and burial.
Beaverhead County commissioners meet as a county board of equalization on July 17 1950 with Norman Giles Harry Helming and Parke T Scott present. No petitions on file for tax reductions but petitions will be received and filed through August 14 1950 at 10 a m for final session. The board recessed after approving minutes and signatures.
Harry Rafler a 48 year old transient ranch worker of Elva Oklahoma was found dead in his bed at the Metlen hotel Saturday morning. He apparently suffered a fatal heart attack during the night. His father H C Rafler arrived in Dillon Monday to take charge of the body. Remains will be forwarded to Oklahoma for funeral and burial services.
Mr and Mrs Leslie B Sulgrove and daughter Barrie of Tacoma Washington visit Mrs Sulgrove's brother and family Mr and Mrs Clay Dennis of Dillon Montana during a brief stay in the area.
The Bozeman Production Credit association, a Farm Credit system lender serving seven southwestern Montana counties, retires the final $5,000 of government Class A stock on June 30. Since 1934 it has loaned $25,873,636 to members, paid $50,020 in dividends over nine years, and built member stock to $136,295 with reserves of $154,840.
Five Beaverhead County High School seniors Maisy Wenger Donald Peter son Bruce Lloyd and Janet Henneberry travel to Missoula for a Montana State University journalism camp July 24 29 The group is joined by Mr and Mrs Dan Henneberry Sally Stamm Miss Stamm visiting Mr and Mrs Gebhardt Fassler of Missoula The program directed by James L G Ford dean of journalism aims to train high school students in producing newspapers and yearbooks with rapid instruction in writing editing and print production.
Goldie VeSella of Hayfork California visits sister Ada Freeman and travels with a group of friends who left Monday for a tour of Yellowstone Park.
S P Meade Beaverhead County Assessor released the 1950 valuation report showing gains in most property classes over 1949. In agriculture acreage and land values rose due to federal and state land sales and patents, with dry farming and hay land upgrades. Livestock showed 14 392 fewer sheep but 421 more cattle. cattle values rose from 125 to 150 per head. Public utilities gained nearly 160 000 in local value while state board cuts cost 117 000. Next year the Mon tana Power Co sub station will be taxed as operating property. Farm lands ranged 11.50 to 37.50 per acre with 41 389 acres valued at 861 336 in 1950, down from 42 404 acres and 862 773 in 1949. Wild hay land valued 9 to 15 per acre.
Dillon's city band under A. H. Hartwig will perform its third concert on Wednesday evening August 2 at 7:30 on the south depot lawn. The program features Bombaso march First Norwegian Rhapsody Oriental Serenade Lights Out march Trombone Blues Jewels Aurora Overture Two Hearts in Three Four Time Glory of the Trumpets Invercargill march among others. Open air program invites public attendance with mosquito spraying supervised by the Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce and parking managed by Dillon police. Chief Mooney aided in arranging cars to park at right angles to the curb to fit more autos around the depot lawn.
Kathie Jean Hellan eleven months daughter of Mr and Mrs Gilbert C Helland of Dillon died Friday night in a Butte hospital. Survived by parents three brothers grandfather two uncles and aunts. Funeral services were held Monday at Brundage chapel Rev A B Ward St James Episcopal church. Burial Mountain View cemetery pallbearers Herb Wheat and George Heikila.
Official canvass by the board of county commissioners lists township candidates for Dillon township and Lima constable races. George E. Baker (R) and Michael Nettik (D) are named for justice of the peace. Larry e Pterson (R) is listed for constable of Lima. Other results appear in the table on page.
The City Library reports improved service with consecutive day hours and summer extensions from 3 to 5 pm and evenings. Interchange of books with the Pacific Northwest Bibliographic Center increased city lending by about 200 monthly. two librarians, Walter McGuire and Dorothy Gelhaus, assisted. Book Week observed with international themes. more Home Demonstration club meetings held. new book stacks and shelving rearrangements expanded space for acquisitions. Ongoing needs include storage for magazines, basement magazine room partitioning, lighting upgrades, and proper fixtures.
Mary Beth Smith appears on the Great Falls College of Education Super Honor Roll for the quarter ending June 2. The nursing student earned 16 credits and 45 grade points in Materia Medica medical and surgical nursing foods and nutrition nursing Arts II and Medical practice. She graduated Beaverhead County High School in 1940 and is the niece of Mr and Mrs Luther.
