About 125 men battle the Meadow Creek forest fire on the Bitterroot divide after starting Sunday. Workers include 52 from the local area, 28 from Wisdom, 25 from Bitterroot, and around 20 CCC enrollees. Two pack strings and a Missoula plane drop supplies as wind fuels spot fires. Maiden Creek fire near Horse Prairie is out.

Forgery Arrests and Sentences Reported in Dillon
Two men were arrested for forgery and two more were sentenced to state prison in Deer Lodge. Jess Stewart was nabbed at the Mike Rebich ranch after cashing a fake check bearing Holger Carlson’s signature. Tom Mullen was picked up for signing Chris Reiber’s name on a $3.85 check and trying to cash it, later arraigned and given two years. Sylvester Craig and Kenneth Snelson pled guilty to forgery, receiving four and three years respectively. Joe Bakke got 15 days for shoplifting.

Armstead businessmen quickly brought fire extinguishers to a Union Pacific depot blaze sparked by a southbound train engine. Volunteers controlled the fire after the roof suffered considerable damage.

Circus Carnival Set To Open In Dillon July 29

Dr. W. B. Townsend reading and guidance specialist arrived last Sunday at the Normal college. He has led conferences during the Reme dial and Guidance Workshop, enrolling 4,000 teachers in the summer. The Townsend library and lab facilities supported demonstrations while Miss Dorothy Web ber and Miss Anne Feley directed discussions for primary and intermediate teachers. One credit is offered for students, with Supt. E. A. Hinderman and other named attendees enrolled.

Dillon Contractor Carl Mast Injured in Truck Accident
Carl T. Mast, a Dillon contractor, was painfully but not seriously injured Monday evening when his truck ran off a highway north of Dillon and overturned. His hand was bruised when pinned beneath the vehicle and he suffered a scalp injury. F. J. Tucker nearby resident aided by raising the truck to release Mast. The truck sustained minor damage.

Beaverhead county voters turned in 2241 ballots in the primary last week. The official tally, certified by Justices George Opp and Louis Stahl and County Clerk Albert S. Baker, showed 61.6 percent turnout of the 3639 electors. The Dillon area contributed 1258 votes, Bishop led with 45 of 58 cast, Jackson 119 of 157, and registration books are open for November plus recall of absent-ballot voters from 1938.

Officials Release Pheasants in Beaverhead Valley
James Hendricks state game farm superintendent and Deputy Game Warden Charles Price released about 500 Chinese pheasants in the Beaverhead valley. The Butte Anglers' club led by William Carpenter plans to release about 300 pheasants nearby and around Lima. A large number of Maiden Rock fingerlings will be distributed in Blacktail creek soon.

Bear Helps Fish Escape Its Captor
Mrs. Pete Westergard and her mother Mrs. Jack Porter watched a brown bear approach while fishing near Pear Lake in Birch Creek. The bear seemingly intervened as a trout took the hook and the women fled, unsure if the bear freed the fish or removed it.

Colorado man fined for fishing without license
John Renner of Colorado pleaded guilty in justice court to fishing without a license and was fined 27.50. Deputy state game warden Charles Price arrested him Monday near Armstead for fishing in closed waters. Renner could not pay and remains in county jail.

Two Lives Lost Tuesday From Fire And Run-Away
Beaverhead county reports the season's first haying fatality as Kenneth Peterson, 50, died near Dell after his mower team ran away. He unhitched after stopping the horses, fell ill, and died likely from shock or heart failure before medical aid arrived.

Tragic Forest Fire Claims 13 Year Old Near Lima
James William Nye age 13 of Little Sheep Creek near Lima was burned to death while helping his father and two men erect a fence near Straight Creek eight miles west of Lima. The blaze unknown origin sprang up in a draw and swept toward Nye as he attempted to escape climbing a steep slope. Coroner Raymond M. Swartz said smoke likely suffocated him while his horses endured the blaze. one team suffered severe burns, the other escaped.

Beaverhead approves stock sales pavilion at fairgrounds
The Beaverhead County Commissioners approve a new oblong stock sales pavilion with a 500 seating capacity to be built south of the stock shed at the county fairgrounds. It will support the annual Dillon purebred Hereford bull sale on October 27 and 28. Construction bids will be invited soon. Bernard Williams notes the structure will provide adequate facilities for the event.

Park Playground Committee Schedules Final Friday Meeting
