Event report notes ST trapshoot at a local venue with ED Stoltz and other shooters competing for state honors. Participants from several clubs gathered under clear skies. Competition highlighted consistent marks by leading shooters and a close overall scoring race.
With the three day Montana State trapshoot at Dillon ending, 132 participants competed for $6000 in prize money. Bob Poore of Butte captured the state handicap crown for the second straight year as about $2800 was mailed to winners on the final day. The event was hailed as the largest and most successful Montana shoot in decades.
Seventeen selective service registrants are AWOL for failing to return questionnaires or report address changes. Beaverhead board asks for information to locate them before turning names over to federal officials for possible prosecution. Names listed include John Edwin Swell Harvie J Dalton Earl E Batchelor Emil F Massie Dewayne Bender Zygmunz Kempinski Howard E Stoner and others.
Aluminum collection begins with groups led by H. H. Hawkins and Gene Bond. J. C. Ferguson is named head of Beaverhead county defense board by Secretary Claude R. Wickard. Girl Scouts canvas neighborhoods for aluminum donations, coordinating with Pat McFadden and others. City-wide effort aims to harvest scrap aluminum with scouts and volunteers coordinating door to door.
A fire at 7:30 Friday evening burned a garage at 414 S Dakota Street owned by Mrs Margaret Jensen. The blaze caused charred walls and ceiling while an automobile inside was spurred out by Nellie Jensen before firefighters from Dillon Volunteer Fire Department brought it under control.
Mayor Bert Megquier was asked to marry visiting couples at city hall and elsewhere, claiming to have no prior training. Clerks and locals note the ceremonies appeared informal and potentially illegal due to lack of required formalities.
Aug 2 inductees include Raymon L. Trolinger from Jackson and William Back of Dillon. Back left for Mr Solon Virginia to visit parents and will be inducted by the local draft board there. John D. Kunch of Brooklyn, formerly at Birch Creek CCC and now in Whitehall, will be inducted Aug 5 for the New York board. Charles Jacobs of Wisdom sent to Fort Missoula July 16 was rejected. The 21 year old count rose from 37 to 38 with Thorval N. Davidson of Dillon registering after discharge from the U S Marine corps July 6 1941. Davidson, who turned 21 last January, completed a three year hitch and may be defered if his number is called.
The 1941 4 H club and Future Farmers of America of Madison and Jefferson counties meet Friday and Saturday July 25 and 26 at Twin Bridges. Beaverhead county groups send members to watch livestock and grain judging contests and enjoy the demonstrations program.
Bernard Williams was principal speaker at the Monday Rotary dinner discussing the AAA program. It noted the shift from voluntary to mandatory farm controls, the goal to conserve soil and ensure a fair return for producers, and penalties for noncompliance.
Eleven Beaverhead county 4 H club members will represent at the State 4 H club fair held with the North Montana Fair in Great Falls August 4 to 9. Calf show entries include James Hartwig David Hartwig Kathryne Hartwig with leaders John F Shaffner and Harry Tash.
Alice Archibald arrives in Dillon to serve as home service adviser for Montana Power Co. in this district. A Mount Mary college graduate in Milwaukee she earned a bachelor of science in home economics. She previously worked as nutrition supervisor at St. Vincent's orphanage in Milwaukee and as advisor for Wisconsin Michigan Power Co. in Iron Mountain Michigan.
Fifteen range ram breeders have sent in entry blanks for the Dil lon show and sale on Monday September 29. Each breeder may show no more than two pens of five rams per breed and all rams must be sold. The Dillon Chamber of Commerce sponsors with a $100 purse. Earl O. Walter of Filer Idaho will act as auctioneer and is a noted sheep sale expert.
Two marriage licenses issued this week involve out of state couples. David W. Armstrong and Pearline Glover from Pocatello were granted a permit to wed and married by May or Bert Megquier on July 17. John Mac Ginniss of Los Angeles and Maxine Hitch of Baker, Montana, applied for a license on July 19.
In recent issues the Examiner notes a resolution adopted by the twenty third annual American Legion convention. The measure concerns purge of news commentators banned from Montana stations of the Z Barnet amid mixed metaphorical criticism involving orchids cactus and nettles. Continued on page 5.
Hereford calves born in 1940 representing Montana will convene in Dillon for the Beaverhead Hereford bull show and sale futurity event slated October 26 and 27. Entry blanks were mailed to bull breeders by Co. Agt. Bernard Williams. futurity entrants must be nominated by February 1 1941 and entries filed by August 15.
Thirty two thousand rural mail carriers will serve as agents in selling Defense Savings Stamps nationwide. Carriers will take orders and deliver stamps valued from ten cents to five dollars, with purchasers receiving albums to mount them. Albums can be exchanged for Defense Savings Bonds, a reuse of a 1917 1918 War Savings Stamps role.
Thomas Taylor 26 of Downs Kansas pleaded guilty to a $10.90 forgery and cashing a W L Rice check at a Dillon department store on June 24. He was sentenced to five years in the Deer Lodge state penitentiary and committed. Authorities in Republic County Kansas report a parole violation claim on him with priority on release.
