A jumble of notes cites Japan startled by the Hitler Stalin rift, California politics stirring for next year’s governor race, and relief for the rich as a potential slogan. It mentions cigaret taxes, oil control, May cigaret output, Roosevelt’s day and sun plans, and odd local mentions including Miss Burna Wick and Hunt and Tellam in Anaheim.
Mayor Bert Megquier proclaims July 21 to 26 as Aluminum Reclamation Week in Dillon urging citizens to support the campaign. He cites a federal emergency over aluminum supply vital for U S bomber and fighter plane production for national defense.
The Chamber of Commerce board met Monday without a quorum and took no official action. President Bond asked Secretary Mayland to draft a letter to the state highway commission seeking reasons the Twin Bridges Dillon highway was not included among last week’s approved projects. Dillon residents had hoped for the road with the new fiscal year, but bids around $800 000 did not mention this Beaverhead Madison area project.
A trio of one act plays directed by Ruth Phelps will be staged this evening in the Normal college auditorium. Free to the public the program features Tradition by George Middleton with Bob Gregg Betty Morger Ruth Wineman and a second play Wish You Were Here about camp girls and a bank robber with Genevieve Green Kath leen Crowley Cecilia Bold Alice Brekke Ruby Burns Frieda Reuter Sue Tragitt Lydia McCleery.
American Legion and Auxiliary delegates returned from Red Lodge where they attended a state convention July 10 for a three day session. Eleven year old Charles McGrath of San Francisco visiting Dillon with relatives was struck by acute appendicitis and required immediate surgery. He is convalescing at Barrett hospital and expected to resume fishing and other pursuits soon.
The county board opened a temporary employment office in Dillon with Harold E. Contway in charge to ease farm labor shortages during haying and harvest. Transients should register at the courthouse and ranchers will contact workers there. The office is planned to operate for at least two months.
The Montana Wyoming cattlemen tour departs Missoula July 26 and will visit 450 Hereford breeders across two states, ending at the Great Falls fair August 4. The group stops at Twin Bridges, Cameron, Ennis, Bozeman, and other ranches with a full day by day itinerary available from Co. Agt. Bernard Williams. Plans for a county wide aluminum reclamation drive are advancing with district chairmen named from home demonstration clubs in Armstead, Dell, Jackson, Wise River, and Wisdom.
Employees of the Montana Auto Supply Co. held a farewell party at Roselle's in Armstead for Mr. and Mrs. Fred Woodside after the business sale to J. G. White. Harold Wheelbarger served as master of ceremonies and toastmaster, with a fried chicken theme dinner and dancing lasting into the night.
Bob Fitzhugh and Jimmy Pratt of the Flying D ranch visited Dillon on Saturday while en route to Bannack to provide a saddle horse to two Virginia boys preparing an overland pack journey from the Gallatin and Madison river region toward southern California. The youths are sons of prominent local residents.
Mayor Bert Megquier spoke at a Dillon Rotary dinner about a proposed oil paving project to treat 20 blocks of dusty streets. The Rotary club volunteered to circulate petitions to property holders along the streets, seeking majority approval to push further investigation into feasibility.
Three majorettes Leone Cashmore Judy Chapman and Betty Blythe Stephan lead their troops in review next Tuesday evening as Elks lodge No 1554 drum and bugle corps shows in dress rehearsal between innings of a softball game. Parade uniforms debut, climax of weeks of intensive training for state contests in Helena July 24 25 and 26.
A Dillon chapter of the Young America Wants to Help organization formed under Mrs Saunbers of Butte leads the Silver Bow city drive. Officers elected Lois Hazelbaker president Isabel Ross vice president Evelyn Gregg secretary treasurer. Members urged. coin boxes in business houses for war relief donations planned along with food sales and silver teas to raise funds.
Despite frequent electrical storms in the Beaverhead National Forest officials say danger remains low due to lush green grass and early-season rainfall. The year’s first fire was reported Saturday in the Medicine Lodge area, quickly contained by two fire guards. A Monday blaze in Bear Gulch, Horse Prairie, scorched less than one twentieth of an acre before control. Foresters hope for favorable conditions to continue and note recruitment challenges with Birch Creek CCC personnel and general labor demand.
Sterling Dagner suffered a left front tire blowout that caused a head-on collision near Reichle on Highway 91. No injuries were reported though both vehicles sustained extensive damage. a Butte man was the other driver.
Willis Whittier, assistant manager of the Vaughn Ragsdale store in Dillon, leaves for Miles City to assume the management of the company store. He has worked in Dillon for 18 months after arriving from Billings, where he joined the Vaughn Ragsdale staff four years ago. Whittier is known locally as secretary treasurer of the softball club and treasurer of the junior rifle club. Clyde Casterline will fill the vacated Dillon post. he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Casterline and a Beaverhead high graduate of 1941, recently employed at Husky Service station.
Phillip Bond of Dillon won a one dollar Spokane Chronicle snapshot prize for a photo of Dingley lake near Elkhorn with pine mountain peaks in the background. The Chronicle contest will conclude August 23 with four final prizes of 100 dollars and potential National Snapshot Awards entry. Bond left on a two week pack trip through the Pindar area with George Bowring and J W McCracken.
