Frank Madden was elected to head the slate of officers of the Beaverhead Mining association at the annual meeting Monday night at the Chamber of Commerce quarters. Other officers chosen were J. E. Kelly vice president J. L. Mayland continues as secretary and J. C. Fuller as treasurer. The board of directors includes A. H. French John Collins W. M. Logan E. W. Bond Louis Stahl and Albert Erickson J. E. Kelly retiring president presided. A committee of William Logan John Collins and J. L. Mayland was chosen to present resolutions to the state convention at Cooke City, and the association's mineral exhibit will be taken.
Mr and Mrs Ray Gimble of Spokane Washington are visiting friends in the area during a stay that highlights community ties and personal travel.
Beaverhead county reports frequent storms over the past two weeks disrupting haying but benefiting ranges. Old timers compare the season to past decades as hay prospects improve with high livestock prices and a prosperous outlook for the county’s main industry.
Phil Burman a 30 year old from South St. Paul was jailed Thursday night on charges of stealing an automobile owned by Lillian Banks. The car was taken from a North Idaho street parking spot around 11 p.m. Officers in nearby towns were alerted and the suspect was arrested in Lima by Laurence Peterson a few minutes later.
A. T. Crossley, Birch Creek rancher, was found dead at his home last Saturday afternoon with a high power rifle nearby. Coroner ruled death from a self-inflicted gunshot. no inquest held. Funeral held at Brundage chapel with Rev W G Lewis officiating. Survived by wife, twin daughters LaRetta and LaVeta, daughter Mrs Alfred Kamps, and son Alton. born December 20, 1874 in Lima, Ohio. resident of Beaverhead County 53 years.
The Drum and Bugle Corps of Dillon Ellis lodge 1554 placed second to Anaconda at a Helena high school field contest under lights drawing several thousand spectators. Anaconda won 98.5 points, Dillon 97.7. prizes ranged from 100 to 15 dollars.
Emery Moose Renee from Wisdom brought in Robert Atwood on forgery charges after a $6 check with a fictitious signature of George Bowers was cashed at the Roy Baker garage in Wisdom. Hearing postponed pending review of Atwood’s past record by local officers.
A fire at the Davis Conoco station at Glen Dale and Montana streets caused damage to stock and the building. The blaze started from a heating stove early this morning, but attendants and the fire department controlled it quickly.
Weather observers note unusually early bird flocks signaling a possible harsh fall. A puppet clinic at Normal College led by Mr and Mrs Roland Harding runs Thursday and Friday with technical work in room 307. Evening puppet shows Teddy Roosevelt in the Badlands and Cinderella are free and open to the public.
A grass-burning crew conducted work this week along the OSU route to clear vegetation. Workers targeted the right of way through the section, burning dry growth to manage fire risk and maintain access.
George Kelly 38 transient suffered a broken leg when he fell backward from a northbound freight near Grayling Friday evening. He was with three companions who sought work in Bitter Root valley. Kelly was treated at Barrett hospital after the group rushed him to town.
Burglars failed to obtain loot in several break in attempts last weekend. They targeted the Paddock Tyre garage Eliel's the Tribune and the Laundry and also tried to enter multiple south side residences Sunday night according to officials.
Miss Mildred Taylor daughter of Mrs. Carl Taylor married Saturday July 26 to Herman Soll of San Luis Obispo California. The ceremony took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Milo Johnson with Rev. David Kingman officiating. The bride wore a light wool bilge suit with blue accessories and carried a bouquet of gardenias sweetheart roses and lily of the valley. Mrs. Soll is a Beaverhead County High School and Montana State Normal college graduate who has taught at Boulder and East Helena. Mr. Soll is the son of pioneer residents of Boulder and serves in the quartermaster's division at San Luis Obispo. The couple will reside at 884 Pacific San Luis Obispo.
Beaverhead draft board announced that four registrants from the recent July 1 group with numbers 314 and lower are eligible for the next call if classified A-1. Names listed include Ray R. Marler S-242 Joseph N. Klesner S-226 Charles O. Schleicher S-226 and Leo C. Flint S-314. The remaining order numbers for new draftees follow with many NPS. Thomas W. Jones of Dillon was elected chairman, replacing George M. Gosman who resigned, with Major A. H. Williams visiting from Helena for the meeting.
Miss Ora Conway long time Helena schools teacher dies Sunday morning July 27. She was formerly of Dillon and sister of Mrs. W. J. Cushing of Dillon and Mrs. Tony French of Argenta.
Arthur A. Kiebba of Dillon, a spring graduate in engineering physics at Montana State College, accepted a position with Hygra de Sylvania in Cambridge, Massachusetts, according to W. M. Cobleigh, dean of engineering at the college.
Mr and Mrs Louis Dieterle visited relatives at Rexburg Idaho over the weekend staying with family and returning home refreshed.
The first annual invitational softball tournament in Dillon features 10 teams from Dillon Butte and Anaconda, with 15 games over two days. Double elimination format. start times 3:00 4:00 7:30 9:00 and 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Elizabeth E. Olmstead and James H. Vose Jr will marry at St James church in Dillon on Wednesday August 6. The bride to be was born in Dillon and lived here through schooling before teaching in East Helena during the past year.
George F. Willey forty seven died after a brief illness in a Dillon rooming house. He had worked as a hay hand at the Herman Peterson ranch and was shipped to Greenville Mississippi for burial. Oscar Swanson sixty two died when a horse he rode stumbled near Wisdom while summering cattle with his brother. The coroner stated a broken neck likely caused instant death. burial planned in Salmon Idaho.
Beaverhead county’s total assessed valuation rose to 15 978 335 for 1941 from 15 205 021 last year, a gain of 773 314 and 232 206 in taxable value. Dillon property also climbed to 3 541 009 from 3 357 105, up 183 904. officials attribute the rise to higher livestock values set by the state board of equalization and more assessments.
The Beaverhead board met in regular session June 16 1941 to open bids for dump trucks as advertised May 28. Bid results listed from Watson Motor Co Helming Brothers and Davis Motor Co with various Diamond and Ford models and installed dump bodies.
Dr E G Free departs Monday for Chicago Illinois to join the clinical staff of the Chicago Lying-In Hospital affiliated with the University of Chicago. He will work in obstetrics and gynecology. Previously he did a year at the Lying-In hospital before starting practice in Dillon in 1926. For fifteen years he has served as consulting physician and surgeon at the State Orphans' home at Twin Bridges.
Mr and Mrs Moore McKinley and children Carolyn and Moore Jr Mr and Mrs Roy Nelson Miss Evelyn Innes and Miss Faith Smith depart for Seattle following a five weeks stay at the E B Roe ranch in Red Oak.
