County commissioners and fair association plan a Pow Wow after canceling the county fair due to drought and crop failures. Grounds will be turned over to the fire department or baseball team to stage the event with plans to meet this week. The Pow Wow is set for September 18 to 20 alongside the state firemen convention.
Mr and Mrs E L Poindexter and Mr and Mrs John T Orr report a 5600 mile Pacific coast tour in a Hudson six car with three punctures but no flat tires. They left April 18 traveling through Montana Oregon and California enjoying Salt Lake City Long Beach Los Angeles and Catalina Island with many Dillonites and others joining along the way.
Beaverhead County officials met as a board of equalization to review protests on 1919 assessments. Under the new law taxes use classed percentage values rather than total assessed value, with mining land taxed at 100 percent and other categories at 7 to 40 percent. Estimated total taxable value of land and improvements is about 4.71 million, plus 8.57 million for overall property, not including railroads or telephone lines.
A crowd gathered at Dillmont park for the Sunset orchestra's first dance. The Dillon group impressed with dreamy waltzes and lively fox trots, encores, and balanced pacing. Members Tainson, Tessier, Ann Schafer, Fielding Gray, and Fred Staudaher hail from Dillon and plan more dances.
Mrs Margaret Keys of Divide was tried in the justice court Saturday and fined 100 dollars and costs for a misdemeanor carry ing a water trapper and destroying part of a flume Her attorney served notice that the case would be appealed
Sheriff Wyman returned from Butte with Joe and Alexander Lewis who are accused of robbing a car at Apex. They were arraigned and each placed under a one hundred dollar bond. Their hearing is set for July 26.
Frank Rife purchased two large ranches on Horse Prairie for the Rife interests. The Hughes Ranch company holdings include 2,640 acres, 960 leased, 1,100 cattle, 2,500 sheep, 100 horses and 1,200 tons of hay, with prime water rights and improved facilities. Edgar Rife will manage the Hughes place, forming an integrated operation with the Metlen ranch, which spans 1,280 acres and was owned by Hawley Selway, at a price of $25,000.
Clifton, Anaconda teamsters under Clifton Applegate Toole halted work last Friday at noon over pay. They asked for a one dollar daily raise from eight dollars for man and team as paving waits for iron reinforcements, causing street dust and disruption.
J. W. Carney deputy state game and fish warden arrested Will Sherlock in the upper Centennial valley last Monday. Sherlock, a Woods Livestock company herder, allegedly started the fire that burned about 80 acres of timber and is still burning though not much damage now. He says the blaze was to frighten bears away from his steep. Authorities warn workers to avoid fires and extinguish any blaze.
The War Savings Stamps organization offers 15 million grenades as thrift banks for children under 17. Grenades are opened and stamped with war savings certificates when a $5 stamp is bought, then become the saver’s property on completion, with certificates aiding teacher records.
The Sheridan baseball team will face the local nine in this city next Sunday afternoon. This marks the third meeting between the clubs, with Sheridan having won the previous two encounters.
Francesca Zarad the French soprano of the Vienna and Chicago Grand Opera companies will perform at Normal College auditorium next Tuesday July 29. She has appeared with Berlin and Hamburg operas and at Wagner festivals in Beyreuth and will sing English French and Italian works translated into English. Tickets are $1.50 to $2.00 with limited availability.
Gust Luri and Steve John, both Greeks, pleaded guilty in Judge Smiths court to grand larceny. They received two to four years in state prison and were moved to Deer Lodge by Sheriff Wyman. Arrested in Idaho last month, they were accused of stealing sheep from Dixon Browns band on Horse Prairie. some sheep remain missing. They were driving hundreds of G. W. Patterson of Dell sheep, likely taken from Sheep Creek basin.
A water suit began Monday in district court with Browne Branch company as plaintiff and George Jenson among defendants. The case concerns Rock Creek waters and reflects a wave of similar actions this year, driven by drought and water scarcity.
Foss Williamson and Ted Wilkerson were brought to Dillon and charged with grand larceny for stealing three beef animals. Williamson received two and a half to eight years, Wilkerson one to five years. both sent to Deer Lodge penitentiary. Merchant W T Benning held on grand larceny charge with $5,000 bond after allegedly receiving the meat.
Chester Holmes Frank Triplett Hank Toomey Dewey Cashmore and Voorheis Paddock return from eastern camps and France after long service. They and thirty five local youths were among the first to enlist. Two remain abroad with Lieut Baker in Paris and Walter Brown with the occupational army. Dillon welcomes them home with pride and gratitude.
Chicago expert E Marriott arrives to install a $20,000 Wurlitzer pipe organ at the Hartwig theater in Dillon. After testing, opening night will feature a special program with a leading organist and lessons for pianist Mrs. Alice Pegram, who will manage the instrument.
George Whitworth arrived back yesterday from Dell. Local residents report his appearance and movements as a routine homecoming with no incident noted.
Mr Heskett advanced the Ellison White circuit to organize local guarantors for the upcoming Chautauqua campaign. Pearl S Smith was elected president with John Collins as first vice president and ticket chair. F E Foote named second vice president and ad chair. C W Hudson treasurer and Lee R Light secretary. There are 120 guarantors, 109 active.
Sam Clarke of Dubois Idaho spent a day in Dillon discussing dry Idaho spring and summer conditions. He noted a dry trend but better prospects for dry land grain and potatoes, a shorter hay crop but a good 1200 ton hay purchase at 16 dollars per ton, and warned that livestock prices and shipments could depress the state’s valuation if stock is sent overseas.
Grasshoppers devastating Lakeview hay and grain fields in the Centennial valley killed cattle feeding in swarmed pastures. Rancher E. B. Roe lost most of his hay crop and twenty five cattle within hours, as others faced similar but lesser losses from suspected field poisoning.
A defendant, John Taylor, colored, sought a divorce from Mildred Taylor on desertion grounds. The judge granted the divorce and later that day Taylor, with Lulu Miller, obtained a marriage license and wed that evening, officiated by Judge Nelson.
