Lew D. Brundage is Beaverhead county chair for the Montana War Fund drive to be held this fall as part of the National War Fund. Beaverhead’s quota is 4800 dollars, up from last year’s 4000. Proceeds support USO and 21 relief groups aiding ravaged Europe. Brundage named assistants Mrs. J. C. Wedum city chair, Mrs. Paul E. Puyear secretary, J. W. Beaverhead Board Begins Tax Sessions
Beaverhead county's board of commissioners opened its annual tax sessions acting as a board of equalization to hear taxpayers concerns about assessments. The panel will continue until August 13 when it will set the county tax levy for the next year. Mon day officers submitted estimated needs for the year, with the first final budget meeting set for August 8. In attendance were Chairman Martin C. Jackson, Commissioners Archie Henneberry and Paul Stahl, and Clerk C. W. Buckingham.

Hicken Cutting and Canning Demonstration Planned
A July 26 demonstration on chicken cutting and canning will be held at Beav erhead County High School in the home economics room at 2 PM. Miss Lois Huffman announces the event with Mrs. Marjorie Jennings leading, assisted by Huffman, inviting all to attend. Jennings will cover meat canning research and frozen storage, plus guidance on reducing poultry flocks amid a meat shortage.

Beaverhead county's total assessed valuation rose to 16 884 671 dollars from 16 630 208 last year driven largely by cattle increases. Cattle numbers held near 64 589 head valued at 3 136 541 this year versus 64 638 head at 2 768 538 in 1944. Trio Injured Near Dillon After Long Journey
Mr and Mrs Dale Stone and Edwin Stone of Clinton Missouri were injured in a head on collision on the beach road near Sheridan as they neared Dillon. Mrs Stone and Edwin suffered severe cuts and bruises, Dale slight injuries. The other driver had only minor injuries. The Stones were en route to Dillon to visit sister Mrs John Foster and were assisted by a passing motorist to reach her home.

Pilot Fires At Cloud In Night Strike At Ie Shima
Marine 2nd Lt. Carl M. Davis of Dillon Montana unloosed fire into a cloud while pursuing a Jap bomber near Ie Shima causing the enemy fighter to crash and explode nearby. His gear was damaged by the blast and he was returned to base under Major Chamberlain.

Bill Cheek Claimed by Illness in Beaverhead County
William M. Cheek a 56 year old Dillon saloon owner and Beaverhead county resident for nearly 30 years died Thursday in a Butte hospital after a month long admission for a stroke. Born February 22 1889 near Springfield Missouri he later worked on Peyre Brothers ranch and served in World War I before ranching and then entering the saloon business. He had been in poor health for several months and was associated with C F Murphy in operating the Moose bar after Prohibition repeal.

First haying accident of year at Reichle ranch
Bert Hoff aged 33 a hay hand was crushed under a falling derrick at the Carl Hartwig ranch near Reichle Friday afternoon sustaining a fractured pelvis. He was treated by Dr. W H Stephan in Dillon then transported to Idaho Falls hospital. Hoff's home is Idaho Falls with colleagues noting the Friday the 13th jinx.

Dillon Man Died in Japanese Prison Camp in 1942
Confirmation from the War department states S/Sgt. John J. McGahan of Dillon died June 13, 1942 in a Japanese prison camp from dysentery. He had been missing since the fall of Bataan after enlisting in 1940 and serving in the Philippine Scouts. He was born October 20, 1918, and survived by his mother Mrs. E. R. Brown and stepfather plus three brothers.

Lightning Strikes Two Beaverhead Homes in Week
Electrical storms last week hit two Beaverhead county residences. Dr Beata Hall on River Road saw curtains ignite but were extinguished with no injuries. The Wise River ranger station home of Al Muchmore and family lost part of its roof but no fire occurred.

Alleged Arsonist Taken to California
Curtis L. Wootin, named as a San Francisco arson suspect, was arrested near Lima and delivered to San Francisco officials. He allegedly admitted starting fires at St. Margaret's Club after a quarrel with coworkers. Wootin had been held in the county jail following his Lima arrest. Ray M. Parke Scott Hurt in Tractor Accident on Ranch
Parke T. Scott, a prominent Armstead rancher, escaped serious injury Monday after a rubber-tired tractor ran over most of his body while he worked at his ranch. He was rushed to Dillon by Mrs. Scott and son Walter, examined by Dr. W. H. Stephan, and treated for bruises and scratches at the Decker home in Dillon.
