A Dillon Rotary Independence program opened with patriotic songs and readings. The Kiwanis funded lighted sports field dedication featured three softball games, drills, and music. District officials announced the Aug. 16 17 softball tournament and thanked sponsors and workers who installed the lights. Northwest Welders and the Pheasant, Gleed’s, Winn’s, and Fire Department teams played under the lights.

Gleed's holds first place after one sided wins over Safeway. Winn's beat Eliel's 12 to 7 in a doubleheader while Gleed's exploded 24 to 4 against Safeway. A later doubleheader saw Gleed's win 24 to 12 over Safeway Ten as floodlights debuted at the new field.

Ed Olson of Missoula shows two prints in the Montana Photographic Salon displayed in Eliel's window. One work Back to the Field won a prize, and Lonesome is a portrait study. Sam McCoy Sentenced After Shoplifting Guilty Plea
Sam McCoy age 33 received a 30 day sentence after pleading guilty to shoplifting at J. C. Penney. The act occurred Saturday and city officers arrested him before Justice Judge George Opp Monday.

Governor Joseph B. Poindexter of Hawaii spends time in Dillon en route to Washington D C for talks on territorial affairs and to attend the Democratic National Convention in Chicago as Hawaii’s delegate. He plans New York City visit to his son before returning west for additional Dillon days in August. He travels with his daughter Helen Poindexter and is hosted by brothers Dr. F. M. and E. L. Poindexter. Poindexter is a former Dillon resident who held multiple legal posts and later Hawaiian governorship appointed by President Roosevelt.

Initiatives Filed With State Office In Montana
Five petitions were filed with Secretary of State Sam W. Mitchell last week but only one appears certain for the general election ballot. The Bozeman state college seeks up to 850000 in bonds for new buildings funded by a quarterly levy. Other petitions include老60 monthly payments for seniors, civil service for state workers, a fish and game commission and wildlife state ownership, and repealing direct primaries for a party convention system. Approval requires signatures of at least 8 percent of governor votes in a majority of counties.

Langdorf Family Mourns Death In Salt Lake City Funeral
Funeral services were held last Friday in Salt Lake City for Clarence Langdorf son of S A Langdorf of Dillon. He died suddenly Tuesday morning of a heart attack. His sisters Elveretta Langdorf Mrs John Wenger and Mrs Addie Barbour his brother Sam and his father attended the rites.

Winns Lose to Bozeman Oaks in Bozeman Debut
Winns, Dillon Softball League, traveled to Bozeman Sunday and were defeated 12 to 3 by the Bozeman Oaks, 1938 champions and 1939 runners-up. Johnstone, reputed sixth best pitcher in the United States, struck out seven of eleven in the initial innings. The teams will play again in Dillon next Sunday.

Dan Yockey Dies At Beaverhead County Farm
Dan Yockey eighty three year old longtime Beaverhead County resident died Saturday morning at the county farm after a long illness. He was born in Indiana and moved to Beaverhead County years ago. Survived by a daughter Mrs Frank Tourtellot and a niece Mrs Leo Messenger both of Horse Prairie and a brother in Weiser Idaho. Tom Markovich and family of St Helena California formerly of Dillon stayed several days at the home of Martin Markovich.

Beaverhead county residents endured a heat wave with a Monday high of 91 degrees, near the year’s June 16 maximum, while temperatures hovered around 90 in recent days.
