Coal Deposits of Montana Reach Notable Expansion
Montana’s coal lands classification, underway via the geological survey, predicts the state will rank among the nation’s top coal producers. From 1880 to 1906 output grew from 224 tons to about 2 million tons, with rapid gains late in the 1880s and 1890s, then steady increases into the early 20th century. About 50 operators work statewide, with over $5.6 million invested and coke ovens numbering around 550, supporting a substantial annual value and wages.
