Summer term enrollment totals 229 at Montana State Normal
Summer school enrollment reached 229 for six and nine week periods per the registrar. Of these 31 men include 5 G I bill students, while 198 are women mostly teachers renewing certificates or finishing requirements. Some high school graduates are taking college prep subjects. Summer session began June 9 and ends August 8 with six week exams next week.

Local Woman Visits Parents During Cornell Lab Career Break
Patricia Gilbert of Buffalo New York visits her parents Mr and Mrs Leroy Gilbert during her annual vacation. She has worked three and a half years at the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory. On her Dillon trip she rode as a passenger on the new Olympian Hiawatha streamliner in its first Chicago to Butte run.

Last Rites for Pioneer L. G. Woodside
Pioneer Beaverhead County resident L G Woodside died in Spokane July 3 after months of ill health following a spring fall. Born July 28 1859 in Peoria Illinois he moved west in 1879 living in Glendale Reichle and Dillon before settling in Spokane with his son Elmer. He leaves four sons and three daughters in law eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Brundage chapel with interment at Mountain View.

With a new one mill tax levy, Dillon’s city library may double income from 900 to 1800 dollars if the council approves. State law allowed one mill, but a recent bill permits a mill increase. Funds would support better stacks, books, longer hours, and librarians’ salaries.

Rev Hunter and family arrive as new Dillon minister
The Rev Mr James M Hunter and his wife move into the Methodist parsonage in Dillon with children Howard 6 and Jami 1. He succeeds Rev Omer Idso who was transferred to Sheridan after serving here since winter 1944 45. Hunter previously worked three years in Anaconda and holds a STB from Boston University School of Theology 1941.

Flying saucers sighted near Dillon in dusk sky
Dillon reports three bluish green flying saucers moving east to west above a service station at about 3 a m. Rennie Davis, not prone to a saucer craze, glimpsed the objects while listening to the radio, leaving observers to wonder if the disturbance affected the program. Sky watching may grow as a pastime.

Merchants Defeat Anaconda Eagles 10-2 at Vigilante Park
The Dillon Merchants powered to a 10-2 victory over the Anaconda Eagles Sunday. Both teams had nine strikeouts. Dillon had 12 hits with two errors while Anaconda had 8 hits and seven errors. Banquet Honors State Education Board Guests In Dillon

Danish Gymnasts And Folk Dancers In Dillon Show
A group of 36 Danish gymnasts and folk dancers will perform Sunday at 8 o'clock in the Normal College gymnasium. The event, under Dillon lodge No 273 of the Danish Brotherhood of America, tops a world tour selection from 500 contestants. They have appeared in Europe, Canada, the United States, and recently at Madison Square Garden and Radio City. Dillon is their only Montana stop.

Pioneer of Beaverhead Dies Monday
Mrs. Louella Maddox 68 a pioneer resident died Monday morning in Rossiter hospital Sheridan after a lingering illness. She lived in Butte and Twin Bridges and was born June 22 1879 in Glendale Beaverhead County. Survived by sons in laws Frank Schulz Gilbert Quilick John Swofford and B W Maddox a daughter in law and many grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at 2 in Melrose Community Church with Rev Omer Idso presiding.

Dr W H Stephan was reap pointed county physician for the ensuing year at the regular monthly meeting of the county commissioners now in session. The board, with Parker Scott of Armstead in attendance, discussed preliminary budget estimates and county expenditures for the coming year. Shearing and haying work slowed by bad weather while Beaverhead wool pool is prepared for shipment within a week or ten days. Some wool from non pool owners already goes east. prices range 45 to 52 cents, with fine wool in highest demand. Alfalfa cutting began but paused by showers. haying in Big Hole basin delayed until late July or early August. Tom Fairbank has 100 men ready to work when weather clears.

Howard E. Morse and William Mitchell submitted resignations as aldermen at the regular meeting. Mayor Williams said vacancies will be filled soon. Plans for a city disposal plant were introduced by Wenzel of Great Falls with possible federal loan funding. Dr. Curry asked for library funding via a one mill increase. A plumbing board was appointed. Western Union floated 24 hour teletype service to replace Morse code operations at Dillon station. A college sponsored tour under Pres. Rush Jordan will take Normal students to Virginia City and the Montana State Orphans Home in Twin Bridges this Saturday. History and westward movement students form the core group, with 40 to 50 participants expected. Cars depart at 9 30 a m and return via Twin Bridges, as part of a summer school tour series.

Beaverhead County treasurer Alice Orr reports July 1 windshield stickers issued to 2390 county owners with 1398 passenger cars 902 trucks 90 trailers tagged. Six month period yielded 315 driving permits. New car and out-of state purchases pay half normal license fee. full fee applies to stored or returning Montana cars. By June 30 1947 license and tax receipts totaled 32953 about seven thousand more than year earlier.
