Beaverhead leads Montana in cattle and wool production while county timber and hay stock counts are noted as high. County-wide reports highlight cattle and wool as primary outputs with strong hay tonnage figures.
The 1931 farm review by the U S Bureau of Agricultural Economics and Montana's Agriculture Department ranks Beaverhead as Montana's leading cattle and wool producer. Beaverhead totals show 70,600 cattle and overwhelming hay output, while Madison leads in sheep with 222,000 head to Beaverhead's 217,000.
William Davis a ranch hand was found dead beside a highway in the Big Hole basin on Sunday morning. He and Hathaway left Wisdom Saturday night and were drinking. the team reportedly ran away dumping Davis into an irrigation ditch. Hathaway aided but could not revive him. Davis worked in the basin for about two years.
Frank McLean a Beaverhead county resident for 21 years died at Barrett hospital after a brief illness of pneumonia. Born in Scotland on September 5, 1893 he came to America as a youth and worked on county ranches and for the Selway Sheep Co. He served in World War I. Survived by a brother Alex of Dillon and two brothers in the English navy. Funeral set for 2:30 pm at Brundage chapel with Rev. T. J. Simons officiating. Interment Mountain View Cemetery.
A thousand people attended the Melrose Fourth of July celebration with Dillon residents winning an eight six boxing match against Butte and Hutchinson's eight proteges competing. Rodeo events ran in the afternoon while hot dog stalls and carnival concessions buzzed. Many residents fished the Big Hole River and the day drew large crowds from Butte and Dillon.
The new stamp mill on mining property controlled by W. J. Cushing and Dillon men is running a full shift with four men employed. George B. Conway of Helena is involved. The Argenta mill, near the Continental divide four miles above Argenta, started last Sunday and is expected to add workers as operations expand.
IL L iam Logan was elected president at the Beaverhead Mining association annual meeting held Thursday night in the courthouse. Joe Metlen became vice president while Roy Herndon was re elected secretary and J C Fuller treasurer. W A Graeter named to fill the Argenta district vacancy on the board. a representative from each mining district serves on the board. The group planned to hold the Aug 14 annual picnic at Sacajawea park and to display a mineral exhibit at the Sugar Bowl cafe headquarters.
The sugar beet web worm infests Deer Lodge and outlying areas, destroying several gardens. Weeds such as pig weed and lamb’s quarter feed the worms, which move from weeds to crops. The outbreak will last about 20 days, then moths emerge and a second wave is expected late July or August.
The Beaverhead County Board of Commissioners condemned the Twitchell bridge in the Centennial as unsafe for travel and ordered posting. Residents request Flynn P. O. lane opened and designated as a public highway with cattle guards. County Attorney T E Gilbert to give opinion as deputy examiner discusses county fair maintenance.
Lieutenant Governor Frank A. Hazelbaker spoke to several thousand at Sidney July Fourth celebration. The Dillon Republican candidate for governor has toured eastern state cities this week amid optimistic reports on his statewide candidacy.
Mr and Mrs Orlando Connelley welcomed a baby boy on the Fourth of July in Livingston. The infant is the child of Dillon native Orlando Connelley, eldest son of county administrator Rebecca Connelley.
Renfro and W. E. Tallent of the Dillon Gun club starred at the Nevada state shoot in Reno. Tallent tied with Frank Troeh of Portland and W. E. Warren of Sparks for the Nevada singles title, with scores 192 and 190 out of 200. Renfro also won state titles in Montana recently.
Authors say human error in driving cannot be eliminated but 1932 cars with all steel bodies four wheel brakes strong frames and safety glass offer greater protection. Drivers urged to be alert careful and avoid recklessness by taking a safety pledge this year.
Alma C Kirkpatrick pioneer matron of Beaverhead county passed away at her Frying Pan basin ranch Friday after a lingering illness. She was born December 25 1854 in Rockville Indiana and came to Beaverhead valley 53 years ago. Survived by husband James Kirkpatrick a sister Mrs Harley Thompson and several nieces and nephews. Funeral was at Grace Methodist Episcopal church and interment followed at Mountain View cemetery.
Twenty two children in the community received free health examinations during the annual Summer Roundup for pre school children held last Friday at Barrett Hospital. Dr W H Stephan and L Routledge led the exams with County Nurse Luella Stickney and School Nurse Katherine MacGregor assisting. The event, run by the Dillon Parent Teachers association, aimed to help parents address any defects before school opening.
Mrs. Margaret A. Gibson of Bannack died last Wednesday in Phoenix Arizona at her niece's home. Her body was taken to Butte for a Sunday funeral attended by many Dillon residents. Born in Rockburn Quebec she was 89 and moved to the United States as a young girl settling in Connecticut. She married Archie Gibson in 1865 and they later moved to Bannack Montana where he owned the Maggie A Gibson dredge boat and ran a hotel until 1928. Her husband died in Butte two years ago and she had lived in Arizona since.
The new postal rates require 8 cents for letters and 8 cents for air mail letters with 8 cents per ounce for the first and additional 8 cent increments for letters. Air mail charges are 8 cents for the first ounce and 18 cents for each extra ounce. Local post offices report no stamps yet but have old 8 cent issues in stock.
Charles Bowman Hutchins and his wife Helen Owen Hutchins arrived at the Normal College to present a three-day series of nature programs. The pair showcase North American natural history, West wildlife, and musical works with harp and song. Helen Hutchins also writes on wildflowers of national parks and performs her own compositions. A three day land utilization tour of Beaverhead and Madison counties will be conducted next week under Montana State College agricultural economics and the forest service. Glen Smith of Missoula will lead the Montana stockmen party with Dillon as headquarters visiting Gravelly range in Beaverhead forest Madison county and Big Hole basin districts.
Absent voters may obtain ballots at the office of Clerk and Recorder Albert 8 Baker since last week. Eligible electors outside the county should apply promptly as official ballots will be sent to distant precincts days before the election. Within county voters away on election day may vote at the clerk's office, but greater absence from precincts does not grant ballot receipt.
Mrs. Clara Paga Wilcomb, Alder Gulch pioneer born December 24 1844 in Thornton Gore New Hampshire, died June 13 in Ashton Idaho. Funeral at Brundage chapel Dillon last Saturday with Rev Meeke officiating and two hymns. Interment at Point of Rocks beside her husband who died 1907. Pallbearers from Twin Bridges. Survived by nine of eleven children.
The college campus will gain a new concrete retaining wall along the curb from the irrigation canal to near the hospital. A five foot sidewalk will accompany the wall, improving the street and campus appearance. The project cost between 1600 and 2000 dollars and was awarded to Perkins of Helena.
Widow and large family mourn Beaverhead county pioneer PADDOCK who lived in Bannack for over 50 years. Born December 15, 1866 in Terre Haute Indiana he settled in Montana and ranched in Grasshopper valley. Funeral at Baptist church Friday at 2 30 with Rev R O Shannon officiating. Interment Mountain View Cemetery.
June automobile license receipts totaled 361 178 17 dollars, bringing this year’s total since March 15 to 1 039 908 19. Distributions from the June fund include Silver Bow 4 571 24 and other counties such as Cascade 1 791 04 and Gallatin 2 402 19 along with several more listed amounts.
Robbers broke into the Eliott Cash store last Wednesday night through a rear window and fled with about $12 in cash along with cigarettes, candy, and other merchandise. The incident followed a prior gunfight involving James Jenkins who faced a first degree assault charge and was held on $3,000 bond after barricading at his stepfather’s home.
