Fifty-two state candidates and forty-eight county hopefuls seek party nominations. The field includes multiple incumbents and rising contenders across major regions as primary season advances amid local party committees and district races.
Beaverhead Legion post hosted a large community picnic at Dillmont Park attracting hundreds from Dillon and Beaverhead county plus guests from Butte and Madison County. The event featured an afternoon and evening program with an enjoyable dance.
A.J. van Ham, former Dillon resident, shot and killed his 21 year old wife Ethel in Phoenix last Friday morning before taking his own life. Domestic troubles cited by relatives as the cause. Ethel was sleeping at her father’s home when the shooting occurred. Van Ham left Dillon in 1926 to live in Arizona and was later a resident of Butte. News carried via Associated Press dispatches. The tragedy shocked former Dillon acquaintances.
Beaverhead voters face a large turnout with nearly 100 candidates on the July 19 primary ballot. The sheriff post draws eight Republican and three Democratic candidates, the strongest race, while the Republican and Democratic tickets include 25 and 27 state candidates respectively.
The Montana State Normal College held a morning assembly featuring Dillon and college dancers. Performers included Tleen Jackson Merle Schmitth Dorothy Groshean Elsie Islayd Ethel Herndon Jane Waldorf Lola Latham with Joe Smith accompanist. A firefly dance featured Ebba Anderson Roberta Bras June Randolph Beryle Scully Florence Tolson with Pauline McCarthy accompanist. Additional numbers by Giovanna Cardinale Eileen Grimes Betty Harrison Dorothy Ann Gogman Elizabeth Ballard Catherine Hartwig Peggy Quackenbush taught by Elizabeth Ballard. A posture drill showcased Ebba Anderson Elizabeth Ballard Ina McCracken Georgia Thorson Gladys Blaine Mary Musburger Estelle Taylor Jute Randolph Ernestine Ethel Jarussi Vera Schulz Florence Burrell.
Forty two students earned spots on the spring quarter honor roll at the Montana State Normal college. Lead scholars include Dillon girls Virginia Randolph and Margaret Jordan, first and second respectively, with twelve Dillon students on the list. The honor roll recognizes more than two honor points per credit across at least 16 credits.
Eliels and the Montana Mercantile Company opened in new remodeled quarters last Saturday signaling expansion in Dillon. Beaverhead Red Cross named Eliel as chairman at the annual meeting. E W Bond elected vice chairman and Miss Georgia Mathews re elected secretary treasurer.
Dillon nine opened with strong showings defeating Bannack and Sheridan as manager Scotty Hutchinson promotes a fast diamond team. In a 10 inning thriller Dillon edged Madison County 6 to 5 with Callahan three hits and Vandegrift two hits while holding rivals to six hits. Buck jailed for burglary. Buck received 0 days in county jail after pleading guilty and recovered loot from Hutchine butcher shop.
Loren Ware of Wise River formerly engaged in ranching near Bannack spent Saturday in Dillon attending to business matters.
Tige Tallent, holder of the state handicap title, led the field at the Dillon Gun Club regular shoot held at the fair grounds traps last Wednesday night with the high score.
Dillon Rotary club leaders presided at a Monday night dinner in Hanson cafe. Retiring president O A Bergeson chaired as Lt Gov Frank Hazelbaker recounted the dedication of the International Peace Park linking Water ton and Glacier parks as a symbol of US Canada peace. Joseph E Monroe reviewed Dillon Rotary history and past presidents. Bergeson spoke on the recent International Rotary convention in Seattle.
Montana Supreme Court declares unconstitutional the statute granting the State Railroad and Public Service Commission power to regulate private motor carriers. The ruling leaves regulation of common carriers intact. Justice A H Angstman writes for the court and all justices concur. Fergus county district court judgment in Maynard M Barney v. Railroad Commission affirmed.
Beaverhead County will hold a tax deed sale August 10 under orders of the board of county commissioners. County Attorney T D Gilbert is preparing ads for county owned lands. Purchasers may pay 20 percent down with the balance over five years at six percent interest. Proceeds go to state, county, and school districts. The sale covers about 10 033.04 acres including 8 881.96 in Big Hole Irrigation district valued at $2 per acre. Big Hole lands, once 26 owners, will be offered as one tract if possible. Other parcels include 991.8 acres on the East Bench near Dillon valued at $1.50 per acre and 160 acres Belle Combes.
The rule requires travelers to carry a shovel an axe and a water bucket during this summer when entering National forests by car or on pack trains. The policy takes effect July 1 and applies to each party.
Illon will hold no community celebration next Monday but residents will not let the nation’s birthday pass without mark. Continued on page 8.
Nutting reports a record day crop start in Beaverhead county with a predicted larger first cutting than recent years. Heavy rainfall earlier this month boosts yields, contrasting with last year’s drought when some ranchers harvested only one alfalfa crop. Hot weather recently reduced water supplies, affecting ongoing pasture growth.
After a gun threat at the Watters home on Kentucky avenue last Wednesday night, officers used tear bombs to force James Jenkins from a barricaded room. He fled to a bathroom and basement before surrendering as a third tear bomb was prepared. No charges filed yet.
Butte and Anaconda golfers attended the Dillon Country Club Invitational on Sunday attracting about 40 visitors. The event featured low scores under 40 by several guests, a noon lunch by Dillon women, and broad participation by local members. Jeff Froman arrived from Klamath Falls to visit his brother Ben, a county pioneer resident.
A three ton Featherly Transfer truck owned by Featherly Transfer Co and 25 sacks of Hans Matson clip wool were destroyed when the vehicle overturned an embankment along Stone Creek in Madison County. Driver Mel Nelson and a second occupant escaped with only scratches and bruises as the truck and wool went 26 feet into the creek. The edge of the embankment gave way under the weight and the fire was eventually brought under control.
