Fred Rife Killed In France Navy flyer dies in airplane crash over France

Fred W. Rife 23, aviation radio man first class, was killed Jan 14 in a plane crash over France. A Dillon area family learned of his death after notifying his Seattle parents who had heard from his relatives. Rife was a Beaverhead County high school graduate and former Montana State Normal College student, in service three years with overseas duty since last March.

Water Users Company Elects Staff For ear

Dillon saw its first sub zero temperatures of 1945 over the weekend with a low of 13 below. The storm dumped heavy snow from six inches in Beaverhead valley to two feet in higher areas. Norman college weather bureau logged nine below Saturday night and other areas reported colder readings before moderating early in the week.

Registration Closes Feb 16 for Dillon Lima Elections

Dillon city and Lima town elections close registration February 16, Clerk Albert S. Baker announced. Elections set for April 2. Voters who did not participate in November must register to vote municipally. those who voted by absent ballot need not re register. A city caucus will be held in late March to nominate candidates.

Dillon Water Users Irrigation reelects officers and directors

At the annual meeting held in the courthouse courtroom, J. E. Keller was named president with Ray D. Martinell as vice president and Bruce A. Risley as secretary and treasurer. Re-elected board members include Keller, Nelson, Cornell, Fitter, Gleed, Wyatt, Gravely, Martinell, and Peterson. The board reported the June 1944 dam fill to capacity to relieve downstream high water.

Mrs Mary A Selway Dies At Barrett Hospital

Mrs. Mary A. Selway 52 wife of Roy R. Selway of Dillon died at Barrett hospital after a brief admission. A life long Montana resident her parents were Madison county pioneers Stephen J Ries and his wife. She was born in Butte March 29 1892 and lived in Madison and Beaverhead counties. Four of her five sons are serving overseas. The couple previously lived on a ranch north of Dillon before moving to town.

Rotarians Hear Talk on Russia

Elveretta Wenger a Beaverhead county high school student spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club Monday night using a new USSR book as basis. She noted Russian soldiers’ fighting record, centralized organization, and resource shortages while Russia seeks security and living standards. Also, piano solos by Rachel MacDonald and cornet solos by Hewitt Martinell. A. F. Waldorf chaired.

Recital in Butte Highlighted Miss Pat McFadden Solo

Miss Pat McFadden daughter of Mr and Mrs T F McFadden appeared in a vocal recital at St John s Episcopal church in Butte presented by pupils of Miss Phyllis Wolfe. She sang The Gipsy by Luigi Arditi with Fred Honey as accompanist.

DILLON MAN WOUNDED IN LEYTE ACTION

Staff Sergeant George A. Rebich of Dillon was slightly wounded in action on Leyte December 2. A War Department wire to his wife Mrs Jane E K Rebich in Palo Alto California confirms the injury. Rebich has served 20 months in the South Pacific with the Seventh division, taking part in several island invasions. He is a Beav erhead county native who spent most of his life in Dillon.

Beavers To Go on Tour This Week

Beaverhead county high school's cage squad travels to Anaconda on Friday and Deer Lodge on Saturday after a lone defeat at the hands of Butte Central last week. The Beavers beat Anaconda Central and Deer Lodge earlier this season but both hosts boast strong home records. In the prior home game, Coach Clancy Johnson's team recovered from an early season loss to defeat Twin Bridges.

Sylvia Christensen Installed as Worthy Advisor at Rainbow Assembly

Sylvia Christensen was installed as Worthy Advisor of Dillon Assembly, Order of the Rainbow for Girls, at a regular meeting in the Masonic hall. Reichle Man Wounded for Second Time in WWII Service

Pvt. William F. Bryan of Reichle was wounded in Luxembourg on December 28 during overseas service. Previously wounded in France in September, he earned the Purple Heart and has been overseas since August 1944 after enlisting January 4, 1944 with a Beaverhead unit. He is recovering in a hospital in France. further details were not provided to his wife.

John W. Mountjoy bought the Lobby bar on North Montana street from W. E. Talent. Mountjoy takes over management immediately and previously ran the Eagle bar on Bannack street. Talent operated the Lobby for 15 years, including pool hall activity in early ownership.

March Dimes Dance Set for Dillon Saturday

Beaverhead county closes the March of Dimes drive with a Saturday dance at Dillon city hall auditorium. Mrs. F G Lyon announces tickets on sale with W H Stephan and A G Williams handling sales. Dillon Home Damaged in Stove Blast

Explosion of a frozen water jacket in a kitchen stove badly damaged the home of Joe Jaques on North Washington street about 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon. All windows except one were shattered and the stove was blown to pieces. Jaques escaped injury while a newsboy fled in terror. The incident followed two similar blasts in Dillon during the past year.

Beaverhead group attends National Western Stock Show

Eighteen Beaverhead county residents attended the National Western Livestock Show in Denver. The delegation included Berg Christensen Norman Giles Chris Bay and multiple local couples. Two purebred Hereford bulls sold for 50000 each to Carl Thornton of Gunnison Colorado establishing a world record. Jim Harrison bought a stallion to be delivered in spring. Latimer Smith rode in the rodeo feature.

Third Campaign Will Be Made Saturday Morning

Dillon will conduct the third scrap paper and rags collection Saturday morning with city truck drivers aided by Beaverhead county high school students. Bob Gosman and Joe Shaw urge residents to have contributions ready for pickup. The general committee offers help wrapping and tying bundles and lists members including Shaw Grimes Bennett Hatton Wolf and Davis. Only about a third of the target has been gathered so far. Weather kept many donors from placing items at the curb during the second collection last Saturday.
