Rotary Speaker Praises Reconstruction Of Social Order

The Rev. Harvey J. Schmidt of the Presbyterian church spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club on Reconstruction of the Social Order. He criticized rigid objectors to social betterment and compared capitalism and communism, outlining their flaws and attractions in a measured critique. He urged constructive progress.

Beaver High Honor Roll and Opera Update

Five students top the Beaver head county high school second quarter honor roll with four points each. Actives include Ruth Helen Albright Patricia Gilbert Betty Jo Jeppson George Kennedy and Floyd Pahnish. The Quill and Scroll society held initiation with pledges listed. Work begins on the operetta Up in the Air under Jean Ballard with a cast named Betty Jo Jeppson Paul Decker Bruce Gilbert Jane Waldorf Mary Dawn Warner Suzanne Gilbert Don Wheat Lorraine McGrath Marjorie Opp Fred Wolfe and Jimmie Hier.

Third annual birthday ball announced for city hall festival

Warren M. Stone announces the third annual birthday ball at the city hall auditorium tomorrow night. Tickets sales exceed previous year with 70 percent of proceeds to St Vincent's hospital in Billings and the rest to the Warm Springs Foundation. Music by Dillon orchestras Dean's and Don's and an Elks quartet performance accompany the event. About 5,000,000 people nationwide are expected to attend.

Officers of Rainbow Body Are Inducted at Meeting

Officers of Dillon assembly were installed at the regular meeting last Wednesday night at the Masonic hall. Court of Honor Held Thursday by Boy Scouts

Several Dillon Boy Scouts received advancement in rank and merit badges at a court of honor held Thursday night in the courthouse. Tenderfoot badges went to eight scouts, including Fred Chapman and Dave McLaren. Second class to Bill and Carl Davis. first class to Kenneth Mount. merit badges to John Garr Dugan Luebben Osborne Cardinale Bruce Jeppson Donald Smith Robert Smith and Vern McLaughlin. Rev. W. J. Loar of the Baptist church gave the principal address.

Dillon Elks to Honor Past Heads at February Meeting

Dillon Elks lodge to observe past exalted rulers night at the next regular meeting Tuesday night February 11. Exalted Ruler Lee Hoerning names a committee for a special program with past heads in the chairs. The lodge also plans a celebration of the order’s national anniversary this month.

Normal and High School Debate on Constitutional Override

A joint debate by Normal and High School will address whether Congress should override Supreme Court decisions with a two thirds vote. The topic centers on declaring acts unconstitutional, with the discussion prompted by recent political questions.

Streets of Allon to Be Graveled by WPA Men

WPA workers began gravelling 50 blocks in Allon on Virginia Street, adding 24 laborers to Dillon’s project. The cold weather halted other builds while the second story of Dillon’s federal building is planned to resume when conditions improve, and an overpass project is underway.

Local Stars Lead Montana Trapshoot Averages

Two Dillon Gun Club members top state high averages in 1936 trapshooting results as reported by a national publication. Ted Renfro posted 3500 targets for .9640, while W. Rothrock of Billings led with 1000 targets at .9650. Pete Westergard and C. Clark followed with .9611 and .9616 respectively. Additional Dillon shooters posted varied scores with H. Peterson and others recording lower averages. Herman Peterson logged most of his 7025 targets on eastern and Pacific coast shoots.

Car Wreck Near Reichle Sends Driver to Safety

A car driven by Joe Mihelich of Lima skidded on an icy highway near Reichle yesterday morning and plunged through a guard rail. The vehicle tore off several guard rail posts and broke the cable but all occupants escaped injury.

Beavers and Normal Continue Winning Streaks in Week of Action

Beaverhead county high school and Montana State Normal posted key wins as the Beavers defeated Gallatin high 36 33 at Bozeman and beat Butte Central 21 18 at Butte. The Normal Bulldogs topped Carroll College 36 23 at Helena, extending unbeaten streaks.

Sportsmen to wage war on all rodents in Montana

Dr. W. F. Cogswell urges Montana sportsmen to join a rigid campaign against gophers to prevent spread of bubonic plague noted last year in Beaverhead County. The plan includes hunting trapping and poisoning in Beaverhead Jefferson and Silver Bow counties and warns clubs against tail-count contests. A traveling lab will test for further infection while WPA efforts back the campaign through poisoning shooting and trapping in the named counties.

Forage Plant to Be Subject of Meet in Beaverhead

A new legume forage plant adapted to this region will be described at a Beaverhead county ranchers meeting at city hall next Saturday afternoon. County Agent Bernard Williams announced astragalua ruby was first found on John Masolo’s Waterloo ranch in the Jefferson valley about six years ago. Masolo will attend to discuss development and growth. the plant has drawn agronomists’ interest and a Journal of the American Society of Agronomy article.

Bitter Cold Grips Beaverhead County Last Night

A severe cold wave hit the region with low temps 15 to 20 below zero in Dillon and nearby areas after recent snowstorms. Many motorists fled to heated garages to shelter their cars as temperatures continued to fall across Beaverhead County.

Death of R Sebree Hero of early Dillon sports

Ralph Sebree a former Dillon resident and son of a city founder died at his California home after years of ill health. He helped start Dillon’s first football team and organized the first basketball and baseball squads. Survived by his widow owner of the Mellen hotel and two brothers in California.

Boxing Card Draws Large Crowd at Dart's Hall

Weston Strasser of Normal college knocked out Buz Reeler in the first round of a four round feature. Leonard Kare defeated Jack McLenegan by technical knockout in the second after substituting for Louie Bell who was ill. Boane Karkolas Cowboy Swotish Bob Hoffman Pete Seamon and Francis Gibbons fought to four round draws. A curtain raiser featured Webster and Fredrickson. Bill Rolands promoted the card for the Ditton Athletic club with Johnson and Seaman as referees.

Beaverhead M E A Unit Holds Meeting Friday

The Beaverhead division of the Montana Education Association held a dinner meeting at the Andrus hotel dining room. Delegates to the executive session in Great Falls in March were elected: Genevieve Albertson Norman College, Duane Taft Lima, Fay Kirkpatrick high school. Alternates named were Gladys Feley, C M Ogren, Charles Henry. Mrs Moe sang two selections with Anne Feley accompanying and Jean Ballard led group singing.
