Beaverhead county endures a harsh cold snap with Dillon at 20 below for the season’s low while Big Hole Basin records 40 to 45 below. Across the county roads are largely impassable except main highways as snow and storms tighten the weather’s grip.
The Beaverhead Young Republican League plans its Lincoln Day dinner next Wednesday to kick off the 1936 program. Tonight at the courthouse, final plans will be discussed. William Backus was elected president, with Mrs. Mary Farrell as vice president and Mrs. Frances Sewell as secretary and treasurer. No dues will be charged this year as the group aims to expand membership, reaching a peak for 1936.
Walter Featherly was elected president of the Beaverhead Valley Seed Pea Growers association at a court house meeting last Wednesday. Martin Thompson was chosen vice president Maynard Lovell secretary and treasurer. The board of directors includes J. C. Ferguson and R. K. Nedrow with Lovell serving on the Intermountain association board. About 60 ranchers attended as bylaws were adopted and plans for the season discussed.
The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors the annual flag contest with County Superintendent Nell Doyle coordinating. Classes 6 and 6 participate locally, while 7 and 8 pursue district, county, regional, and state stages. Last year Dillon students William Tower and June Patrick won the regional meet in Butte. The contest features a written test on The Flag of the United StatesIts History and Its Symbolism and a declamation judged 50 points each.
The annual birthday ball at City Hall Auditorium drew a large crowd last Thursday despite frigid conditions. Proceeds totaled about 50 with 70 percent to St Vincent’s Hospital Billings and the rest to the Warm Springs foundation to aid fight against infantile paralysis. James Campbell of Armistead attended on Monday for business matters in Dillon. The groundhog’s shadow was noted as a sign of lingering winter conditions. the sun shone brightly all day across Montana.
Mrs. Mary B. Wampler 80 longtime Big Hole basin settler died Saturday in Los Angeles after months of illness. She came to Montana in 1886 with husband David F. Wampler, early Beaverhead County stockmen. Survived by four daughters, one son, thirteen grandchildren. funeral and interment held in Los Angeles.
Beaverhead county ranchers heard about a forage plant Astragalus ruby i from John Masolo of Waterloo who described its alkali and poor soil tolerance and alfalfa like seed content. County Agent Bernard Williams urged seed trials and noted progress in crested wheat grass and dark alfalfa. Information is available at the county agent's office.
Dell executive Smith McKnight arrived in the city for a business visit today. He met local officials to discuss potential investments and then toured downtown facilities.
The Dillon area saw wins and losses as Montana Normal Bulldogs fell 33-26 at home to Idaho Southern Branch after a 28-21 win over Northern Montana. Beaverhead county high school beat St Peters 22-17, then lost 29-11 at Livingston as Francis Gibbons led locals with seven. Idaho Southern Branch dominated the Normals in a fast paced, tight contest.
The state board of equalization sent tax return blanks to county clerks to aid taxpayers in meeting the April 15 deadline. Returns may be paid in full or in two installments, with no filing fee this year. Thresholds apply for single, married not living with spouse, and married filers, with exemptions of 1000 or 2000 and a 2500 gross income trigger. (Continued on page 4).
The February civil docket opens with Judge Lyman H Bennett presiding. No criminal cases are listed yet, but several civil actions are scheduled with potential additions before court convenes. Readouts include Albert Schmidt vs James McIlrath on Feb 10, Hang Mikkleston and others on Feb 13, and FDIC versus H T Kranabel on Feb 14.
William Bailey of Big Hole basin died in January in a cabin near his home. Sheriff James A. McCollum received a letter from Mrs. J. B. Wood of Trenton Missouri seeking information about a brother named William Bailey who disappeared 30 years ago while working as a sheep shearer. McCollum will investigate to confirm identity and locate his relatives.
Helen Morrow heads the junior high honor roll for the third period of the year with an average near 2,900 points. Dorothy Ann Gosman ranks second with about 2,888 points, followed by Alice Davis and a tie between Eileen Grimes and Frank Kurtz for fifth. The list includes Etho Mary Forrester, June Johnson, Florenco Boka, Ray Wolf, Giovannina Cardinale, Helen George, Ruth Koenig, and Noreen Thiba with varied scores.
Jack Davey is held in Beaverhead county jail after his arrest Monday night by Undersheriff C B Blinn and Chief Charles Nelson on a worthless check charge. He allegedly bought stock feed from a local mercantile, received $20 in change, and was later found in a rooming house. Authorities call him an ex convict. Also, Idaho driver Mike Flynn was fined $26 in Judge Stahl's court for not tagging a potato cargo in interstate form. he was arrested Friday night by Sheriff James A McCollum.
Smith-Hughes students at Beaverhead County High completed their 1936 agricultural project books, with notable improvement over the prior year. Charles Greene earned state praise for meticulous farm records. other top performers include Joe Hermann, Dick Shepherd, Floyd Pahnish, Arthur Christensen, and James Freeman. Only two of 22 enrolled failed to complete records.
BOOMVILLE Mo Election of cadets to membership in Kemper Military School honor societies was announced at a mid term dinner. Eighty eight cadets were selected from the corps of 360 for the four groups military general athletic and scholastic.
