More than two thirds of property owners favor the paving plan for Dillon. A nine to ten year repayment period is proposed with five years of contractor maintenance after completion. Estimated cost is about 250 dollars per lot. Work is expected to start in spring with district formation taking about sixty days and council action sought at the next meeting.
Washington reports the quartermaster general signed a formal order to dispose of about 400 million pounds of raw wool in small lots at no less than British civilian prices. The plan runs to July 1 with a sale moratorium until October 1 to aid 1919 U S wool marketing. Senator King pressed for western wool growers while Britain aims to hold prices. eastern mills oppose.
A telegram to L. Stone of the State Bank of Dillon reports the War Department will maintain British issue prices as a minimum for wool sales, will stop offering domestic wool after July 1 until November 1, and expects to stabilize the market with a price range of thirty to fifty cents in eastern markets and a similar western range.
County officials push to block a county board of equalization and oppose a classification tax scheme. They also seek constitutional changes to allow larger road expenditures and fund federal road projects. W L Collins re-elected president. officers include J M Fabian Emil Kickbush J R McKay and W M Biggs.
Alex Cruickshank of Lemhi county Idaho died last Friday in Salmon City after influenza developed pneumonia. An old Indian fighter and hunter, he was known in Dillon and Beaverhead county for hosting hunters at his ranch and for supplying horses for the last Pow Wow roundup wild west show, leaving many friends.
Elizabeth Holloway wife of Clarence Holloway of Grasshopper died in Dillon Monday from pneumonia following influenza. She had two weeks of illness at home on Kentucky Avenue and was the oldest daughter of Edward and (Mrs) Marchesseau pioneer Grasshopper valley residents. Survived by husband two young children parents and several siblings. Funeral at Brundage parlors with interment in Mountain View Cemetery.
In an interview with Dr. Walker the city health officer, he notes six influenza cases in school age children, with a hundred plus cases under physician care in November. He questions school closures and says quarantine offers limited protection against walking cases and that meningitis is not highly contagious in this instance.
Over several days seven men pleaded guilty to varied charges and one youth was sent to the industrial school. Fred Dearborn of Dillon, paroled from state prison, forged a bogus check and received a 10 to 20 year sentence. D. V. Revane and J. McDermott also pled guilty to grand larceny and hotel robbery respectively, with sentences of 14 to 3 years.
The Dillion Rod and Gun Club held a Sunday afternoon shoot at Dillmont Park. In a 25 bird double event Schultz led with 19 breaks, Fred Dart 13, George Dart and Roy Forester 12, W B Hartwig 9. In a 25 bird single Schultz had 18 breaks. Geo Dart and J E Hurley 20. 15 bird single saw Gimble 9, Dan sie 6, Reece 10, Henneberry 8. Four more in a 25 bird single Schultz 22, George Dart 20, Forester 14, F Dart 14, Hartwig 18. Final 25 bird double had Schultz 21, Hartwig 19, George Dart 11.
Helena January 22 Leo Faust state chairman of the Near East relief drive reports after last night’s success two additional subscriptions. Dillon will host a new wholesale candy business named the Best Candy Company within two weeks. Owners are J. P. Best with wholesale experience and candy maker Harry Geer, locating in the old Crystal Saloon building now being renovated with modern equipment.
George Ditty, a brother of Clarence Ditty, reports that Clarence was severely wounded in the left arm on September 17 and is in base hospital No. 34, A. E. F. He had known of two prior wounds and now has a third wound, as per a War Department letter received yesterday.
Local fundraiser invites readers to buy Lyceum tickets to back a charitable project. Organizers urge community support, noting proceeds go toward community programs and educational initiatives at the Lyceum venue.
Beaverhead defeated Mt. St. Charles 30 to 6 as Helena played a spirited game but lacked Dillon’s teamwork. Williams and W Smith fouled out for Beaverhead, replaced by Hatfield and A Smith. Coastline notes mention upcoming games at Butte Central and Mt. St. Charles and changes in school staff and illness.
Dillon announces five winter lyceum attractions after flu delays. Friday’s program features Sam Lewis Concert Company led by Welsh tenor Sam Lewis with Ruth Avery, Amber Hopkins, and Irene Sfarruf. Other acts include Schubert Symphony Sextette and Warwick Male Quartet. Season tickets $2.40 at Thomas Bookstore.
Montana Association of Commercial Club secretaries endorsed resolutions supporting the Lane land settlement bill. A draft bill to submit to the state assembly would enable Montana to cooperate with the federal plan to reclaim idle lands and settle returned soldiers, with the state providing lands and the federal government financing reclamation. Repayment by settlers would be due after 40 years at a low interest rate.
George Kluge arrived last Friday morning from Norfolk Virginia to visit his mother Mrs Helen Thompson. He served as a baker with the navy and completed three trips to France. He will return to Butte to resume his former job as railway clerk.
Helena January 25. Representative Walsh proposes amending the primary law to rotate names on ballots. The plan shifts positions in each office division for every 26 ballots, allocates alternate piles, and permits ballots with cross endorsements to count for the party of the counted candidate. Names on multiple tickets require a party designation filing. Ballots with endorsements printed on white gulper pages resemble Australian ballots with separate party sheets.
Helena January 22 Soft-drink manufacturers visiting Attorney General Ford were told no drink containing any alcohol will be dispensed in Montana. Ford said the prohibition law would be enforced to the letter and hopeful sales of beverages with less than 2 percent alcohol are not allowed. An appeal to the supreme court might be the only way to challenge the law.
Farmers considering buying tractors or those already owning one may attend a free tractor school at Montana State College in Bozeman on February 17 and 18. Three or four instructors will explain tractor parts and operation in the engineering building, with general tractor man topics discussed for two days.
County treasurer Guy E. Gray held the annual delinquent tax sale at the courthouse last Wednesday afternoon. The event was quiet with about ten properties sold. No disposition was made of the Big Hole Irrigation company’s property.
The Beaverhead Examiner reports the death of Mrs Etta A Tash wife of William S Tash due to influenza and pneumonia. She died Tuesday after planned travel to California and burial is in Dillon with funeral at Brundage parlors. She leaves three sons a husband and her Meade family.
Frank Frazier of Frye & Co., Seattle, makes his routine Dillon visit, seen as a bellwether for Beaverhead county beef contracting season. He declines to discuss beef prizes but hints at future contracting moves toward the Big Hole basin. Local feeders say 15 cents may not lure fat cattle. they expect higher prices.
Hubert Conklin, recently discharged from a New York military hospital, arrived in town after serving with a Dillon unit overseas. He fought in the Argonne with heavy losses, endured concussion and shell shock, and was left for dead before being recovered by American troops. He has much to tell friends about his experiences.
The recital by pupils of L. A. Gregory at the training school auditorium was postponed because Mr. Gregory is ill with influenza.
Mr and Mrs Tom O'Brien and their young son arrived home after traveling to California to accompany the remains of Mrs O'Brien's mother They plan to return to California soon for additional arrangements and duties.
Miss Vera Baker returned from Livingston where she was the lone woman clerk and recorder from Montana at the state meeting. Before returning to Dillon she visited Helena and attended legislative sessions.
County courthouse offices undergo renovations this week with tinted walls and refinished woodwork improving appearance and function for public access and staff operations.
