John A Verbance 65 longtime Beaverhead county rancher died at Barrett hospital after 32 years on local ranches. Born May 4 1885 in Yugoslavia he immigrated in 1904 and lived in Calumet Michigan before moving to Butte and then to Reichle in 1918. Survived by wife Josephine two children two sisters and a Yugoslavian sister. Rosary Friday. funeral Saturday at St Rose Catholic with Father Clifford officiating. interment Mountain View Cemetery.

Fire at Hanson Cabin Sparks Quick Fire Dept Response

A chimney fire at 671 Thomson Avenue was halted by the Dillion Volunteer Fire Department before substantial damage. Alarm sounded at 9 55 this morning and the unit arrived moments later. The cabin is owned by Fred Hanson.

Dillon Educators Attend Regional Teacher Conference

W M C E President Rush Jordan along with Training School Principal L E Walker Mrs Ruth Greenfield and Ralph McFadden attended the Montana conference on Teacher Education and Classroom Teaching in Helena. McFadden chaired the music section Walker served as recorder and Greenfield led physical education study sessions. Committees reported at the end and their recommendations will be published by the university and released by President Jordan.

Elkhorn Hot Springs Ski Tournament Set This Weekend

The Elkhorn Hot Springs Ski Tournament sanctioned by the Northern Rocky Mountain Ski association runs Saturday January 28 at 1 pm for the downhill and Sunday January 29 at 1 pm for the slalom. Prizes awarded to top three in each men’s class and trophies for high point man and high point woman. Dillon clubs including Dillon Ski club B.C.H.L.S.P club and W.M.C.E. Ski club to participate.

Hearing Set to Establish Soil Districts in Beaverhead Valley

State Soil Conservation committee announces hearings on forming a soil conservation district in Beaverhead Valley. Since 1937 districts exist statewide. last year 16 000 ranchers participated in conservation efforts, with extensive erosion control, water conservation, and land improvement projects. Meetings listed for Dillon February 9, Reichle February 9, and Dell February 10.

Memorial Drive Planned for WWII Dead at VFW Post 4163

Lloyd Whipple post 4163 VFW sponsors a fundraiser to erect a WWII memorial in Dition. Prize offers include a radio phonograph and two Transitone radios. Sixty members attended last week as new members Kristie Rogan and Fairbank joined. A nominating committee was named and a joint post meeting with the Lima group arranged. District and member awards were presented before a movie and refreshments.

Dillon Polio Victim Returns to Dillon After Disease

Ned Pilgrim born in Lima now living in Dillon, served 18 months in the Pacific with the army, then returned home in 1945 to run a cleaning business and buy a fox farm. Polio struck him at Shodair hospital leaving him paralyzed but he remains focused on recovery and walking out of the hospital someday. The White Cafe plans a Saturday Coffee Hour with proceeds for the March of Dimes Iron Lung program.

Alva C Gray dies at Riverton Wyoming

Former Lima and Dillon resident Alva C Gray died suddenly of a heart attack at his ranch home in Riverton Wyoming last Tuesday. He left a wife Viola McNinch and children Kenneth Gray and Amos Wisdom with five grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Riverton with interment in Riverton cemetery.

Delos Oliver 75, Beaverhead County Resident, Dies

Delos Ott Oliver, 75, longtime Dillon resident born May 20, 1874 on a ranch west of Glen, died Tuesday morning at Barrett Hospital. He is survived by a nephew Ted Oliver of San Francisco. Funeral services set for 2:00 PM Saturday at Brundage funeral chapel. Brother Fred Oliver died in June 1943.

Pete Vavich district AAU commissioner in Bozeman Montana plans an independent basketball tournament in February. He asks managers of independent teams in Gallatin Park Meagher Madison Beaverhead and Sweet Grass counties to file team names and sponsors by February 1. The district winner advances to the State AAU tournament won last year by the Bozeman Independents.

Snack Shack Burglarized In Sunday Morning Break In

Thieves broke a window at the Snack Shack between midnight and 10 am Sunday and stole two paper coin containers containing money. They knew the location and pried a small glass pane to reach the containers. Keys to the Mobil station nearby were taken Saturday afternoon, hinting at a planned second robbery. Police have leads to identify the culprits.

Nan Merriman brilliant mezzo soprano of concert and radio fame will appear in Dillon February 2 in the Haekee Concert series at 8 15 p m in Beaverhead High School auditorium.
