Vast Public Hearing On Proposed State Labor Law

The hearing drew a record crowd of veteran legislators and small businessmen arriving by rail and bus, many unable to access the floor. The plan sets minimum wages at 40 cents an hour from July 1, 1939 to Oct 24, 1945, rising to 50 cents thereafter. Eight hour days and a 42 hour week apply through Oct 24, 1945, then a 40 hour week. An appointed director of labor would run the act with regional boards to hear complaints, while factual disputes go to the labor commissioner and legal questions to the state supreme court. E C Burris outlined the need, with Assistant Attorney General Lee Metcalf speaking.

Professional labor organizers support the measure while small business speakers warn it grants the director of labor unchecked power. Opponents contend the bill lacks limits on department size and may enable wage increases after October 24, 1945 when petition thresholds are met, while proponents argue it would boost employment and purchasing power for better business conditions.
