Henry Gleed, longtime Beaverhead County rancher who arrived in 1870, died after a long illness. The early settler known for his homestead and frontier work passed away Sunday, marking the end of an era in the region.
Henry Greed Sr a prominent Beaverhead County resident and former Lima stockman died at his Dillon home after a two year illness. The funeral is set for 2 pm tomorrow at Waiats Temple with Masonic rites and Rev Edward Smith of Butte presiding. Interment follows at Mountain View cemetery. He was born in England on May 22 1857.
The Montana supreme court has dismissed M. W. Bucy s appeal after a remittitur received by Clerk Fred Rife. Bucy was convicted of arson last year for burning hay stacks in Centennial valley and sentenced to four years in state prison. A meat storage building on John Peterson ranch at Horse Prairie was burglarized Friday with meat stolen. Sheriff W C Orr reported. Jack Wager received a five day jail sentence by Judge Louis Stahl after pleading guilty to a disturbance in a soft drink parlor.
Beaverhead county resident Joseph Severinsky aged 71 native of Austria died Friday evening at his Barnett avenue home after living in the area since 1914. He was a rancher for years. Funeral lunesat St. Rose Catholic church with Requiem High Mass celebrated by Rev. Father. Continued on page 2.
The Dillon Choral Club and soloists presented a varied program at the Montana State Normal College assembly under director Mrs. W G Gilbert. Selections included To Sing Awhile The Little Old Garden and Indian Dawn with a trio by Mrs Halloran Mrs Wall and Mrs Pyeatt.
George Shaffner and Edward Bay, Smith-Hughes students from Beaverhead County High, swept fat lamb categories at the Montana Wool Growers Association state convention in Great Falls. Their display earned blue ribbons and drew strong praise for the workshop turnout.
Annual winter quarter event at Montana State Normal college centers on a radio television broadcasting theme. The Booster club vodvil on Fel: 11 features the Chanticleers, women’s chorus, Kappa Zeta Nu and more in sketches with Benny Bakman as lead and Fred Gray, Alvin Rudolph in male leads. Other performers include Mary Elizabeth Simons, Louis Schroer, Art Boulsby and Erling Richard.
The Forest Service plans film showings in Beaverhead County during the next two weeks. A truck carries projecting gear and a generator for 14 reels on forest work, conservation, and livestock. A. A. Simpson supervises, with A. A. Schroeder aiding.
The college office announces winter quarter pool times at the Montana State Normal college swimming pool. Men may use the pool Tuesdays 8 to 9 pm and Saturdays 3 to 4 pm. Women may use Fridays 4 to 5 pm and Saturdays 11 am to 12 pm and 2 to 3 pm. If demand grows, extra hours may be added. The pool must be self supporting to cover guard costs.
The Dillon Elks lodge formed a general committee to prepare for the Montana Elks association state convention in August. Exalted Ruler Leonard Innes Esteemed Leading Knight BE W Johnson Esteemed Loyal Knight Francis Gelhaus Esteemed Lecturing Knight W E Barry and Secretary E L Wheat will select subcommittees to handle convention phases.
Frank Hazelbaker is a member of the Arts and Sciences hockey team at State University in Missoula. The team competes for intramural honors on the university rink under hockey manager Marion McCarty, with rivals including the Independents Forestry and Law School squads. The Arts and Sciences squad is the largest with twelve players.
Paris W Armstrong a former Beaverhead county resident died suddenly of a heart attack at Silver Star aged 66. A native of Des Moines Iowa he moved to Montana 26 years ago living in Armstead 1907 then ranching before moving to Butte. Survived by daughter Mrs LaMar Forvilly and sons Philip and Ralph funeral tomorrow at 10 in Mountain View cemetery.
Beaverhead county lawmakers Senator George M. Melton and Representative Joe Metten spent the weekend in Helena as the session intensified. Melton spearheaded the drive to remove the university chancellor with a 32 to 23 Senate vote and pushed to abolish the Havre and Balings normal schools. Metlen, active on key committees, is noted as a leading figure in the current session.
Professor Rh E Albright of Montana State Normal College spoke at the Dillon Rotary about war debts and reparations. He traced prewar unofficial aid, wartime loans of ten to twelve billion dollars, and postwar settlements with long repayment spans. He argued against cancellation of European obligations citing Germanys likely inability to continue payments.
Postmaster J. C. Fuller reports a government inspector will visit Dillon about February 1 to review site proposals for the citys new federal building. Several sites have been offered and the inspector will determine which location best suits the centrally located edifice requirement.
Beaverhead county high school's quintet travels this weekend to meet Twin Bridges in Dillon Friday and Butte Central in Butte Saturday. The Montana State normal team hosts Helena in a matchup famed for high drama as Intermountain visits with a Panthers edge after an earlier win on the rivals court.
Scores of Beaverhead county men gain jobs through Reconstruction Finance Corporation funds allocated to Montana. Dillon project grades and surfaces road to Mountain View cemetery and grades cemetery hills. W A Graeter leads local headquarters and W B Hartwig oversees the road work with crews also active in the southern county and Big Hole basin. Labor paid in script usable for necessities.
A Thursday night card party at St James guild hall under the Girl Scout committee drew twenty tables and raised around fifty dollars. Proceeds were announced by Mrs Anson Baxter and Dr Leonora May who led the event. Pinochle and bridge yielded top scores for Mrs W E Stephenson Dr H F Best and low scores for Mrs A L Anderson H G Rodgers. In pinochle high scorers were Mrs H M Warner Paul Stahl and low scorers Mrs W W Thibideau and Earl Fair.
