Dillon han Is Missing In Europe

Pfe. Robert J. Rott, 20, of Dillon, has been missing in action in Europe since December 25. He served with military police in England and trained in Army engineers in Texas and Missouri after enlisting in 1943. A Beaverhead County High School football star and Normal College attendee, he was sent overseas about three months ago.

Wayne Myers Is Head Chamber of Commerce

S/Sgt. Howard C. Nelson a native of Dillon and son of the late Jasper Nelson and Mrs. Nelson was killed in Belgium Christmas day. He was born July 10, 1912 in Dillon and graduated from Beaverhead County High School. He attended Sacramento Junior College and the University of California at Berkeley.

Balloon lands on ranch triggers furor and inquiry

At Wisdom Montana a brightly colored object descended from the sky and settled on B M Lawrence’s ranch 12 miles north of Wisdom causing alarm among the horses. Sheriff Claude Lay investigated after Lawrence reported the sighting and a box hanging from the object. The incident followed a wool pool meeting in Dillon where directors were reelected.

Myers Elected Dillon Chamber President as New Board Meets

D. W. Myers was elected president of the Dillon Chamber of Commerce by the new board in a session Monday night at the city hall council room. He succeeds S. E. Whitworth. Bert Megquier was elected first vice president and Joe White second vice president. Harold M. Warner remains acting secretary and J. W. Rees remains treasurer. Myers named a legislative committee led by George M. Gosman with S. E. Whitworth Bert Megquier R. M. Barrett and O. A. Bergeson to aid Bea protection.

Beaverhead March Dimes Drive Opens in Dillon

Beaverhead county kicks off its annual March of Dimes campaign this week with high school girls from Beaverhead County High School leading a tag week under the supervision of Ethel Andersen and Sylvia Christiansen. Mrs I W Vinsel joins as supervisor of the county fund board while Rainbow Girls and Girl Scouts withdraw due to rules, leaving the student volunteers to carry the effort.

Freight Handler Hopkins, 72, Dies in Elk River Idaho

Joseph Hopkins born in Liverpool in 1872 died suddenly in Elk River Idaho on a Wednesday. He immigrated in 1874 and spent years hauling freight between Divide Wisdom Salmon River country and the Big Hole. He lived in Spokane since 1923. Surviving are four brothers and three sisters-in-law and a brother and sister in Wisdom. Body taken to Wisdom by Wilford Hopkins.

Beaverhead Woolmen Attend State Meet in Butte

Beaverhead county sent a large delegation to the Montana Woolgrowers association convention in Butte. W. G. Gilbert of Dillon was reelected to the board of directors and numerous local residents and couples participated, including Sen. and Mrs. T. F. Gilbert and County Agent F. A. Ralston.

Funeral of Ambrose Zeigler in Dillon

Funeral services were held for Ambrose Zeigler, 74, a Madison county native who died Friday in a Butte hospital. The Dillon service at St. Rose Catholic church was officiated by Rev. Father Timothy Clifford. Zeigler, born in Madison county in 1870, lived much of his life there and ran a ranch near Zeigler Springs. He is survived by four sisters, two in Twin Bridges, one in Dillon, one in Whitehall, plus several nieces and nephews.

Dillon Rainbow Girls Assembly Names Officers

Sylvia Christiansen was elected worthy advisor of Dillon Assembly, Order of the Rainbow for Girls, at the regular meeting last Wednesday night. She will succeed Ethel Andersen in that chair. Other officers elected were Margot Luebben as associate worthy advisor, Virginia Tovey charity, Shirley Stocker hove, Pat Carrigan faith, Dorothy Tyre reporter, and Janet Curry treasurer.

Veterans Speak at Normal College Assembly

Two former Montana State Normal College students, Marine Cpl Joe Taylor and RT1/c Bill George, spoke at the weekly college assembly. They recently returned from long service in the South Pacific and are visiting Dillon. Rachel MacDonald of Harlowton played three piano solos, and class schedules for the second semester are posted with preregistration for current students.

Fred Holman Claimed at Darby Home

Fred Holman 72 longtime Big Hole basin resident died at his Darby home last Saturday after a long illness. Born 1872 in Indiana he moved to the basin about 50 years ago. He married Josephine Anderson in 1910 and later lived in Wisdom before moving to Darby in 1938. He is survived by his widow a daughter and son in law and a son and daughter in law plus relatives in the Big Hole basin.

Dillon Fire Chief Reports Year’s Loss In 1944 Calls

Dillon volunteer fire department answered 26 calls during 1944, per Fire Chief O. T. Vandegrift. Nineteen calls within the city and seven outside. Total loss to insured and uninsured buildings and contents was $21,460.91, the annual report shows.

Missing air officer John M. McDowell reported over Germany

John M. McDowell 22 of Wisdom was listed as missing in action over Germany since December 31. He served as a waist gunner on a B 17 Flying Fortress with the Eighth Air Force 100th Bombardment Group and had just delivered a Christmas present to Hitler.

One-Act Play at Dillon Rotary Club Dinner

Members of the Normal college dramatics club presented a one act play Kleptomaniac under Miss Myrtle Savidge at the Dillon Rotary club dinner. Cast included Alice Davis Jessie Knox Twilla Meyers Louise Rousch Mary McLaughlin Juanita Hunter and Melvina Hurst. Fred Honeychurch announced the Dillon-Butte Central game and needs for volunteer transportation for the high school band. Bruce Grimes played two trombone solos with Honeychurch, Bert Megquier chaired the meeting, and Elveretta Wenger attended as high school guest.

Waste Paper and Rags Drive Under Way in Beaverhead

The first collection in Beaverhead County yielded less than a quarter of a carload and the drive continues until the goal is met. Bob Gosman, chairman of the central committee at the young people's recreation center, announced the campaign. Dillon streets displayed wrapped bundles as city trucks collected from businesses and homes Saturday morning.

Dillon Business Women’s Club Holds Thursday Session

President Sheldon E. Davis of the Montana State Normal College spoke at the Dillon Business and Professional Women’s club meeting held Thursday night at Gladys Forester’s home. The topic was Shadows and Shades of 1944. The program included songs and solos performed by Mrs. Edna Moe, Bruce Grimes, Gerry Gillies, Betty Newton, and Rachel McDonald.
