Sewell's Jail Break Bid Fails at Beaverhead Jail

Jack Sewell and Edward Rollins were sentenced for last March's Wisdom liquor store burglary. Sewell attempted to escape by hollowing a wall using a tool hidden in a jail cot. Rodger Holmes alerted authorities. a crude iron rod weapon was found but not linked to Sewell.

High School Lettermen's Club Hosts Tonight Fundraiser

The Lettermen's Club of the high school plans an indoor carnival at city hall on Friday and Saturday February 14 and 15. It aims to raise funds for children's playground materials with games booths and entertainments. About 75 guests will attend at the school gymnasium with a smoker featuring Dale Wiley Jerry Wadsworth and group singing led by Bruce Brundage and Boyd Koenig.

William Huntley Dies After Stroke in Tacoma Visit

William Huntley, longtime Big Hole Basin magnate, died Thursday night after a paralytic stroke while visiting near Tacoma en route to California. Survived by two sons Ralph and Clark and six of twelve children, funeral held in Spokane with family vault interment.

Beavers Rally To Win Two Of Three Games

Beaverhead county high school overcame a 10-0 start to beat Whitehall 32-29 in a tense final quarter. Don Smith started a quick 5-0 run and Rogan saved a late shot. The Beavers then defeated Ennis 43-33 before falling 56-34 to Butte in the nightcap of a double header.

Idaho Pair Returned on Theft Count

Sheriff Paul Temple moved to secure extradi tion papers for Paddy Donovan and Wilbur Abshire, arrested in Burley Idaho on Beaverhead county theft charges. Guns taken from Jess Roberts were found in a Burley pawnshop, with the shotgun likely recoverable. Abshire agreed to testify and may waive extradition to Beaverhead county.

T J Carney Promoted to Butte Office

Thomas J. Carney, longtime Union Pacific depot operator and ticket clerk, is promoted to chief clerk in the traffic office at Butte replacing Ralph Butterworth who moves to freight and passenger agent. Carney, born in Hecla and raised in Armstead, has worked in Dillon for a decade and ran West Yellowstone depot during tourist seasons. His family remains in Dillon for now.

Presidents Ball Date Set for February First

Beaverhead county plans the annual Presidents Ball for Saturday February first to draw a larger crowd. Stricken man identified as local sheepherder George Stribe

George Stribe, 70, a longtime sheepherder in the Twin Bridges Whitehall area, was found dead Friday propped against the McCaleb garage on Clark Street. He was identified Monday after a Cornell ranch employee recognized him and a Whitehall call confirmed the identity.

Rifle Accident Injures Mrs Fairbanks at Home

Mrs Wesley Fairbanks of Birch creek was admitted to Barrett hospital at 4 pm Tuesday with a gunshot wound to the abdomen from a .22 rifle that discharged while she moved the supposedly empty weapon. Her condition is stated as satisfactory and not serious unless complications arise.
