The Beaverhead county planning committee will hold a meeting at 1:30 p m in the county courthouse courtroom with a backup at city hall if needed. Harold F. Holland of Montana State College and Claude M. Cory of the AAA will discuss crop insurance and war effects on agriculture.
Irene Megquire, a Dillon girl, is being coached for a screen test on the B. G. DySylva David Butler picture Caught in the Draft at RKO. She is praised for photogenic looks and voice and has studied under Miss Albertson with Clark Gable among former pupils. Her family lives in Dillon and she recently worked at Beaverhead County High School and Spokane business college before moving to Los Angeles.
Beaverhead county rural schools report a total of 157.68 from selling health seals and pencils led by Bon Acord with 14 dollars sold by five pupils. The top prize is ten dollars in health equipment, with East Fox second at 9.60 by seven pupils and Nicholia third at 2.50 by two pupils.
Sheriff M J Dankowski of Green River Wyoming left Wednesday to return Larry O'Brien to Wyoming to answer a bad check charge O'Brien was recently apprehended by Beaverhead county officers at Monida where he was employed on a Centennial valley sheep ranch He was also wanted at Ogden Pocatello and Salt Lake City for various felony counts
After a slow start to 1941, Dan Cupid moved quickly. Charles Bald of Pocatello wed June McIntyre of Lewistown Idaho January 18. The clerk's office saw three marriage permit applications with Charles Newman Evelyn DeKay Frank Michelich and Marjorie Winchell seeking licenses. The Rev Paris D Wells and others performed ceremonies including Joseph P Maher of Butte.
P Bloom of the U S forest service presented the motion picture Blessings of the Grass to Rotarians Monday evening. The film, shot in Grasshopper valley and Big Hole basin, highlighted cattle industry value with Caet Jackson and A A Schroeder among Beaverhead staff. Dr C B Marsh introduced Bloom. Supt Paul Anderson outlined a PTA project and the supper time was extended. Pres. oe Wedum endorsed the project.
Communications between Dillon Chamber of Commerce leader Sec J L Mayland and Helena district supervision E M Little indicate a renewed push to establish a ten enrollment pilot training course in Dillon. A A Bennett of Idaho Falls may operate the shop and classroom at Woodside field, with the field facing regulatory runway visibility requirements.
The Shriners of Dillon formed the Southern Montana Shrine club at a dinner honoring Bozeman native George Baxter. Dr. R. D. Curry was named president with C. L. Boyer as vice president Herman L. Peterson secretary treasurer and Carl C. Hansen Ben C. Proctor and A. A. Schroeder on the board. Out of town visitors included John Lindland Joe Dyas Henry Hirsh William Griffiths Roscoe Thomas Otto Gosman Ben Proctor and L. H. Richardson. Regular monthly meetings are scheduled.
Kiwanis members in Dillon observed the organization’s 26th birthday with Nile Jones directing a national observance. T. F. McFadden delivered a talk on duties and responsibilities as U S citizens. Guests included Dr. J E Kelley and Verne Stanchfield. Kiwanis Governor Lou Brockmann of Lewistown plans a Jan 30 visit.
Members of the American Association of University Women met at Mrs. D I Emerick's home Monday evening. Miss Jean Bishop spoke on pre Columbian Latin American culture spanning 50 centuries per geologists and archaeologists. She traced the Inca Mayan Toltec and Aztec advances in architecture agriculture pottery metal work and weaving using artifacts pictures and maps. Mrs W B Willey shared her Mexico trip with an exhibit of carved idol heads weaving stones obsidian cores arrow heads and temple photos. A regular business meeting followed the program.
At the Jan 21 1941 annual meeting First National Bank of Dillon announced G D Combes retirement plans. Combes will relocate to the west coast and remain on the board while W W Hawkins succeeds him as president after a career with the bank.
Cantrell dairy adds a new White Horse delivery unit to its milk route starting next Sunday. The compact van uses a four cylinder air cooled motor mounted above the rear axle, built on Franklin engine principles, and is produced by the White Truck Co. with a white body and gold dairy lettering.
Memorial services for Dr Henry Huntington Swain were conducted in the Normal college auditorium at 9:00 Tuesday morning with Miss Genevieve Albertson presiding. Swain died at his Helena home on Monday Jan 13 after a long life contributing to Montana education. He came to Dillon in 1898 and served as president from 1901 to 1912. He later held posts as assistant state superintendent and executive secretary of the Greater University.
Weekend incidents report two nonfatal crashes with extensive vehicle damage. Saturday night Rol land Van Antwerp’s Ford coupe struck a guard rail on the viaduct south of town, peeling paint and dislodging a fender and wheel. Early Monday a Butte 1938 Chrysler, license 1 2437, careened on the curve south of Barrett hospital and landed bottom side up against the Cornell fence.
Terry P. Conklin of Dillon left last Thursday for Fort Missoula to be inducted under the postwar draft law. Beaverhead county has 1,129 registered men aged 21 to 36, with 57 slated for service by June first and 26 expected in February’s call. The initial quota lagged as facilities were expanded and 12 locals volunteered for regular service, affecting Beaverhead’s draft total.
The Kampus Kadets M S N C pep organization pledged nineteen new members at a Wednesday meeting on January 22. Most pledges are freshmen, and the list includes Irene Allen Stevensville Shirley Clark Butte Beth Graves Polson Jo Ann Deputy Dillon Barbara Hololan Dillon Carolyn Jackson Norris Ruth Lehwalder Butte Merle Rae Kohls Ennis Carol Miles Superior Pat Peterson Argenta Gwen Sherwood Wilsoll Eleanor Tiefenthaler Anaconda Jean Wilson McAllister Margaret Waynild Outlook Madge Owen Anaconda Rose Banovett Klein Cora Belle Trask Deer Lodge Jean Kelly Butte Eleanor Thompson Lewistown. The group weighs replacing the club with a local Spurs chapter, a national service organization.
Beavers face Butte Central at home after an overtime loss 31-30 to Virginia City. They travel to Twin Bridges Friday before hosting Sun Butte on Saturday, with Butte Central previously defeating the Beavers in an early season clash.
The Butte Natural Gas independents rallied to defeat the Normal college Bulldogs 56 to 54 after leading 22 11 and watching a 28 30 halftime score. Bucivich and Burgess tied for 13 points each as Ray Gallant starred for the visitors. If the Bulldogs win the conference and the Grizzlies win another game the two may meet in a Montana intercollegiate three game series. Eastern Normal’s Yellow Jackets visit Billings next.
The Vigilante Electric Cooperative held its third annual stockholders meeting and officer election in Twin Bridges with about 150 attendees. New directors include Guy D. George and John Woods replacing Glen Stevens and Charles Miller. long time directors F. R. Springer W. D. Sandy Lars Kalsta B. J. McMenomey E. R. Gleed and Harry S. Tash plus C. E. Blinn remain as president and Harry S. Tash as secretary treasurer. The cooperative now numbers 561 members with 257.5 miles of power line across Beaverhead Madison Jefferson and part of Silver Bow counties. additional extensions are planned.
The Normal college Booster club schedules Saturday Feb night for winter stunt night with ten campus groups presenting skits. Miss Ruth Phelps and booster committee Marjorie Decker Fred Rife Bill Newton and James Mountjoy lead the program Gargoyles handle stage management for the annual Chinook fundraiser.
Paddy Donovan, just back from Burley Idaho, entered a not guilty plea in justice court before Judge Stahl. Bound over to district court on a $1,000 bail bond he could not post, he was remanded to county jail. He and Wilbur Abshire were arrested for stealing guns from Jess Roberts’s car.
Arrangements were completed for the annual President's Birthday ball to be held in Dillon on Saturday February 1. The committee under C A Bechler includes Paul Temple Harvey Sorenson Kenneth Wheat J L Mayland and C J Hovren Camas Nelson will oversee the Lima dance. Half of the funds raised stay in Beaverhead county to aid infantile paralysis victims with Dr W H Stephan heading the county drive. Don's Dance Band will play at Dillon city hall auditorium. A March of Dimes drive runs in conjunction with the ball.
Otto Schulz of Sheridan led the park shoot at Dillon Gun Club with the most wins as about 40 shooters attended. 36 hams and bacons were awarded to 18 winners, decided by 2150 blue rocks and trap loads. entrants hailed from Lima Sheridan Dell Jackson Butte Anaconda and Great Falls. Jack Barrett won the novelty miss and out event and also took two other prizes in the day’s program.
Mrs. John Ball of Beaverhead county dies after lingering illness at her daughter's Dillon home. Born Aug 12, 1888 in Dillon, she was wife of John Ball a Sweetwater rancher. Survived by husband, mother Mary Estelle, three daughters, four brothers, a sister, a nephew and one grandchild. Services Friday at 2 p.m. Brundage chapels. burial Mountain View cemetery.
