Regular monthly session of Beaverhead county commissioners opens with W B Hartwig chosen as chair for two years. The board approves previous minutes and bonds and assigns duties to inspect roads bridges and county buildings across districts.
The Dillon Rotary Club heard Prof George Nightengale speak on art in business and the universal role of art in daily life. Albert Erickson summarized Balkan and North African events and outlined lend lease armament plans for aiding Britain as club members and guests attended.
Beaverhead county officers report recovery of a stolen 1939 Chevrolet from Idaho. A suspect was arrested in Monida and charged with stripping parts. Idaho officers expected to arrive today. Terry Conklin, married Christmas Day, will report January 23 to meet the county conscription quota. he was third in the first volunteers drawn for one year of service.
Dillon retail liquor dealers were told by City Treasurer F M McFadden he would issue beer and liquor permits due today in his office. Twelve liquor and two beer establishments have applied for state licenses.
After a 20 hour jury verdict Edward E. Rollins was found guilty of burglarizing the Wisdom liquor store on the prior March 30. Accomplice Jack Sewell pleaded guilty and drew five years. Rollins received ten years at hard labor. Sewell five years. Rollins had prior felony records and a 1939 pardon by Gov. Ayers while serving a life murder sentence.
Letter from England tells of air field enlistment, suffered bomb hits on Arden garden and greenhouse but bungalows survive. Sister notes a nervous breakdown after bombing and loss of poultry battery. Writers express resolve as bombs fall, Britain determined to win. Mrs Lovell, with three brothers and two sisters in England, has not returned since 1918.
Dr. H. H. Swain died Monday noon at his Helena home. He spent 15 years on the Dillon Montana State Normal College faculty, served as president 1901 to 1912, and later as assistant to H. A. Davee 1913 to 1917. He remained executive secretary of the University of Montana and was acting chancellor 1922-23. His Civics for Montana Students, 1907, was widely used for fifteen years.
The Beavers overcame a 25 22 deficit to beat Harrison High 39 28 in a curtain raiser for Rick's College Normal. Sutherland scored from all angles despite Kamps guarding him, as Beavers avenged a prior 38 26 loss to Deer Lodge Wardens.
The Mining Association of Montana will hold its fourth biennial legislative meeting at the Placer hotel Helena on Wednesday Jan 22. Morning session starts 10 with Anthony Strojan Jr presiding. afternoon session chaired by Paul Smith. Banquet at 6 30 at the Consistory Shrine with no speeches. reservations to Strojan.
Normal college Bulldogs win 67 51 Friday and lose 46 47 Saturday in a two game set with Rick's Vikings. Dave Aitken tops scoring with 20 then 16 as Normal total points reach 415 in four meetings this season.
Skeets Cafe will relocate from Bannack Street to the corner block formerly housing the Freezer ice cream shop. Plans include remodeling the corner section and Corner Cigar Store space to join the new cafe quarters. Proprietor N C Skeets Murray says occupancy should occur in six weeks to two months.
The Dillon Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting with road defense planning. Secretary Mayland read a Wheeler letter forwarding Carmody of the Public Works agency, noting the Salmon Idaho Whitehall cut off not on defense road maps and urging chamber action with the state highway commission. Bernard Williams outlined plans for a Hereford bull show and sale next fall, with chamber support confirmed equal to last year. Tentative dates set for Sneely and Monday Oct 26 and 31 entrants listed for the Hereford futurity show.
Members of the Montana Livestock Production Credit Association based in Helena will be the first in four Pacific Northwest states to receive dividends. Checks totaling 20 779 75 represent a 5 percent dividend on stock for those recorded December 31. The association has reserves of 410 578 and total capital and surplus of 826 173. Government capital retirement of 200 000 is noted. The group has loaned about 27 808 000 for cattle and sheep in Montana with minimal losses. The annual meeting is in Great Falls with the Montana Wool Growers Association. Beaverhead County has about two dozen members, and Bezzeman and Bozeman associations are mentioned.
Harry D Black 56 died at Barrett hospital after weeks at home with heart trouble. Funeral plans not set but expected Friday or Saturday with interment at Mountain View cemetery. Born in Dillon on April 2 1885 he spent most of his life here and was a Modern Woodmen of America member. Survived by wife Sarah a sister Mrs Frank McFadden and nephew Ralph McFadden.
Andy Arrigoni of Dillon was fined 100 dollars and given 90 days in county jail for reckless driving during a failed arrest attempt. J W Denney received ten days for petit larceny after officers found them siphoning gasoline. both had pleaded guilty in Judge George Opp’s justice court.
For the third consecutive year the Beaverhead chapter will present a half hour program over KGIR on Friday February 7 at 3 15 p m. Last year the broadcast was in April when five home economics girls summarized the club’s work and the boys presented a Beaverhead county quiz program.
Ross Johnson pleaded guilty before Judge Henry G. Rodgers after being arrested on New Year’s Day for cashing checks signed with signatures from a phone directory. He received a two year penitentiary sentence, suspended due to no prior record, with conditions to remain in state and report monthly by letter to the sheriff at Dillon.
Dillon music lovers will enjoy the Bobcat band under Lowe Howard at Beaverhead County High School auditorium Sunday evening March 23. The roster includes Melbourne Jackson, a Beaverhead graduate, and former local musician Don Shaffner, now with the national guard. The State college band last appeared in Dillon in spring 1939 and later toured the West with about six hundred musicians.
William Kerckel, 26, accused with two others of the Armstead post office robbery on Dec. 19, was arrested Friday in San Francisco. He faces removal hearings this week in front of U. S. Commissioner E. Williams in the California city. Three bags linked to the suspects were found in a Butte hotel after the suspects had fled. Kerckell, a former Montana penitentiary inmate, was paroled in 1940 after a 10 year forgery sentence from Cascade county. Another suspect was recently nabbed in Salt Lake City and is under investigation.
