Sheridan's Montana Visit From Corinne on Overland Coach

Nearly fifty years ago General Phil Sheridan visited Montana in May 1870. He traveled from Corinne Utah by Overland Stage to Helena where he and his staff enjoyed a lavish reception at the International Hotel and danced until daylight. He lingered three days, then moved by river to Fort Benton and Fort Stevenson before heading overland. A sandbar mishap forced a river detour and an escort from Fort Buford. A Sioux scare near a timbered butte proved a peaceful misread as a supply train proved the threat was false.
