Local Man Killed in Action in European Theater

Pfc. Hugh Radwell, 37, of Dillon, was killed in action in the European sector on December 18. A wire to his wife, Hazel Radwell, reports he was with Army engineers near Belgium and may have fallen during the German counter-offensive that began December 16. He joined the Army in September 1943 after volunteering for the Seabees and was overseas since last summer, arriving in July.

Beaverhead County War Bond Totals and Normal College Plan

Beaverhead county reports 143.8 percent of its Sixth War Loan quota with $437,200 in sales and 149.1 percent in E bonds per capita $26, above the national $21.98. Montana State Normal College proposes two and four year curricula to train rural and elementary teachers, while Gov Ford calls for a full investigation of the state university system and custodial institutions as the Legislature weighs the board of education plan.

Beav erhead Man Wounded in Germany Dec 16

Capt. Fred Arthur Hansen son of Mr and Mrs Ras Hansen Medicine Lodge ranchers was slightly wounded in action in Germany on December 16 his parents learned from the War department. He has been overseas a year with an anti aircraft division and may have been in infantry when wounded. His two brothers Howard and Harry Hansen also serve in the armed forces.

Beaverhead County Mounts March of Dimes Drive

Beaverhead county officials set the January 14 to 31 campaign window for the March of Dimes with Mrs. F G Lyon leading the effort in Dillon. Tag day in Dillon on January 20 will have Girl Scouts collecting dimes under Mrs. C J Dougherty supervision while the annual ball is planned for January 27 in Dillon with Lima and Jackson also organizing events. Beavers Run Win Streak To Ten This Season

Beaverhead county high school's undefeated basketball team extends its streak to 10 with a 47 45 victory over the Navy V 12 B team. Coach Clancy Johnson takes the Beavers to Bozeman Friday and Anaconda next week for tests on the road. No home games scheduled this week.

Pioneer Dies At His Fishtrap Ranch In Wise River

Matt Christiansen a 74 year old pioneer rancher of the Big Hole valley died in his sleep at his Fishtrap ranch in Wise River. Born in Denmark on June 17 1870 he immigrated to the United States in 1886 and lived in Butte and Anaconda before settling in the Big Hole basin in 1897. The annual train service committee meeting in the Hazelbaker building outlined plans to continue service with Mrs Fred Woodside remaining chairman and Lee R Light treasurer and Mrs Dave Stratford secretary.

Car and Truck Collision on Grant Road Injures Couple

James Mansfield drove a car colliding with a truck piloted by Al Bay on Grant Road last Saturday. Patrolman Bob Wright reported Mr and Mrs Mansfield suffered bruises and both vehicles were damaged.

Prominent Montana Editor Howard Hazelbaker Dies

Howard K. Hazelbaker 37 a familiar Montana newspaper man died after a kidney illness in Missoula. He had served as Mor tana Press association field secretary and taught journalism at the university in Missoula. He was a former senator from Lake county and Republican candidate for secretary of state and for congress. Funeral was in Missoula with burial at Polson. Survivors include his wife Mildred two Missoula daughters his mother in Kansas and three sisters.

Dillon Mourns Ruby Baum longtime Ashton Idaho Resident

Ruby L Baum 64 a longtime Ashton Idaho resident died last Wednesday at her daughter s Dillon home after months illness. She came from Idaho Falls three months ago and funeral rites were held at Brundage chapel with Latter day Saints oversight. Burial G Mountain View Cemetery. Survivors include husband Orson and eight grandchildren among three sons and three daughters.

Waste Paper Drive Opens in Dillon Saturday

The waste paper drive, sponsored by the Young People's Recreation Center, starts in Dillon on Saturday and runs until a carload is collected for shipment. City trucks and a warehouse are loaned for storage, with Bob Gosman in charge and Joe Shaw leading the general committee.

Plans for OSY National Defense course at Beaverhead HS

Tentative plans for an OSY National Defense course on care and repair of farm machinery will be conducted in the Beaverhead County High School shop. Principal D L Johnson announced the program led by John Hartwig with supervision by the agricultural instructor. Classes will meet Monday Wednesday and Friday evenings beginning January 29 and participants will bring their own equipment to repair under expert local guidance.

Exalted Ruler Harold C. Murray announced Dillon Elks will hold Old Timers Night at the next regular meeting on January 24. Arrangements are led by committee chair Harry Tash with Jack Dougherty and Roscoe Cornell assisting.

Civic group names board in election

Eight directors were elected by the Chamber of Commerce in ballotting during the past week. The new board includes R. M. Barrett E. W. Bond S. E. Whitworth H. M. Warner George M’Gosman D. W. Meyer Joe White and Bert Megquier. President Whitworth calls a meeting for Monday night January 15 at 8 o clock in city hall to elect new officers and conduct business.

Scholarship Authorized for Normal College Teaching Prep

President E. O. Melby announces scholarships for Montana high school graduates entering as freshmen in elementary teaching training. One scholarship is available at each university institution in Dillon Billings and Havre. Further information is at the Normal college office. Miss Ruth Phelps on leave teaches part time at Whittier College in California and works on advanced dramatics at Pasadena Play House.
