Hartwig wins Union Pacific 4-H scholarship
Beaverhead county junior James Hartwig has earned the 1940 Union Pacific 4-H scholarship. The award provides 100 dollars toward tuition at Montana State Agricultural College after five years in 4-H including baby beef and Hereford projects. He exhibited ten calves at 4-H events and the North Montana State Fair, with sales to Safeway of Dillon.

Last Rail Removed Between Armstead And Salmon Idaho
The final stretch of the Gilmore and Pittsburgh railroad between Armstead and Salmon Idaho disappeared last Thursday as Welborn and Son of Dillon began cutting up old cars with acetylene torches. The Interstate Commerce Commission had authorized the service discontinuance last May and the right of way was turned over to the county commissioners in November. Scrap iron from each car is expected to total about 19 tons.

Court Opens Today After Postponement in Dillon
The January term of district court in Dillon, delayed from January 6 to today due to conflicts with Attorneys Smith and Fall, will hear separate trials for Edward E. Rollins and Jack Sewell charged with burglarizing Wisdom liquor store. First case State of Montana vs Edward E. Rollins proceeded with a 12 member jury. Fifty-nine jurors were summoned, including Mrs Hans C Anderson and Stanley Sisterson, all of Dillon.

College Girl Dies in Six-Car Wreck Near Butte
Vivian Annala a 20 year old junior at Montana State Normal college Dillon and daughter of J A Annala Butte was killed in a six car pileup on Harrison avenue three miles south of Butte. Five others were injured as icy foggy conditions caused the crash early Sunday morning. Annala died from a severed jugular vein after being thrown through a windshield in a car driven by Jack Sullivan which crashed into another vehicle involved in the collision.

College Resumes After Vacation at Montana Normal
Seventeen new students join Montana Normal College for the winter quarter while registration incomplete. Fall quarter totals show 238, with 225 enrolled for the new term. Six diploma graduates and two degree students completed commencement before break. Dr. Sheldon E. Davis spoke at the first winter assembly as the men's quintet performed vocal numbers.

Pioneer Lady Lois Brantly Dies After Illness
Mrs. Lois Beat Brantly died early today at the Hazelbaker home in Dillon after an extended illness. She was the wife of Judge Theodore Brantly a former Montana chief justice and longtime Helena resident. Survivors include two sons Lee Brantly in New York and Neil Brantly in Boston, and her daughter Mrs. Lois Hazelbaker of Dillon. Funeral services are Saturday at 2:30 PM at Opp and Conrad Funeral Home in Helena with interment in the family plot there beside Judge Brantly.
