Beaverhead High School Hosts Rotary Speaker on Trade Training

D L Johnson, Beaverd ead County High School staff member, spoke at the weekly Rotary meeting about a government sponsored twice weekly mechanical work training course at the high school shop. The program, focused on auto mechanics and welding, draws about 55 local youths aged 17 to 25, with the FFA also contributing support. The government covers instruction and incidental costs.

A yearly report shows 60 fires in Beaverhead in 1940, the most since 1931. Of these, 34 under quarter acre, 16 between 1/4 and 10 acres, 10 over 10 acres. 51 on forest land, 9 nearby protectors. 477 acres burned on forest land, 573 in protected districts, 1434 near Ruby on unprotected land. Lightning caused 46 fires, smokers/campers 14. Two trespass convictions for smoldering fires. Suppression costs reached 16 209.04 dollars, highest since 193?.

Red Cross completes Christmas sewing quota

Tuesday December 24 marked the completion of the Christmas quota for the Red Cross sewing and knitting project. All articles were finished and mailed to Jersey City for trans shipment to Britain. Stella Murray chairs the production committee with Mrs Sylvester Meade in charge of sew.

Wmeaston Granted Full Pardon for 1938 Shooting

William J. Heaston, 80, received a full pardon from Governor Roy E. Ayers for the 1938 fatal shooting of J. W. Potts in Beaverhead County. Convicted by a Beaverhead County jury and upheld by the Montana Supreme Court, Heaston’s pardon followed Pardon Board deliberations after the November grant and a December 27 decision.

Beav erhead county death toll shows eighty deaths in 1940

Father Time reports seventy nine deaths in Beaverhead county during 1940 an increase of ten from the prior year and above the seventy two deaths two years earlier December and May tied for most deaths with twelve each while November had two. The average age was fifty eight and one third of the deceased were over seventy.

Vincent enlisted in the U S Army at Visalia California on December 17. Peter Michelish joined the U S Army Signal Corps at March Field California on October 19.

Red Cross Sees Ahead in Donations This Year

Red Cross supporters report receipts already surpass last year with Dillon near 400 dollars and rural areas expected to more than double last year's total. The committee urges late donors to return unused seals and notes follow up cards will cut postage and boost health and rehabilitation funds.
