Gail Baum eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Elwood Baum was fatally injured when his clothing was caught in the shaft of a power feed grinder at Beaverhead Fox farm north of Dillon. He died en route to Barratt hospital after the accident Friday afternoon.
Reconstruction of the Montana State Normal college residence halls is expected to cost 181500 dollars with federal loan support sought. The plan aims for Class A fireproof, modern facilities to be completed in about eight months with minimal disruption.
Montana sheep are wintering well and grazing conditions across the state are generally satisfactory. Montana Woolgrowers' Association Secretary Murray E. Stebbins said grazing is aided by adequate snow in most areas, with some southeastern regions experiencing insufficient snow and a crust forming in places after heavy snow and warm spells.
James Robert Duff aged 66, founder of the Monida and Western stage line later known as Yellowstone Western, died Friday in Bozeman after a long illness. Born in Helena, he worked in Butte, served Yellowstone National Park’s Park Transportation, then led the stage line before autos replaced horses. Survived by his widow two sons and a brother Joseph Hi Adatf of Monida.
Prof. Robert B. Albright summarized events of the year at the Rotary club meeting held at the Metlen hotel. He noted quiet Oriental affairs on the surface and argued Russia’s foreign moves are driven by the five year plan’s needs. He predicted no imminent end to Hitler, Mussolini’s hold, or France expanding power, and forecast possible three rival leagues replacing the League of Nations.
The Beaverhead county drive raised 113.65 from a law area effort. Mrs. Frank C. McFadden announced the total, close to 1932 figures, aided by Beaverhead high school girls and local teachers in Dillon banks and the post office.
Countywide New Year celebration draws large crowds with many home gatherings. In Dillon the firemen frolic at city hall featured Claudia Faust dancers Irene Meg guer Elsie Lloyd Merle Schmittroth Jo Ann Deputy Dorothy Groshean and Maxine Jardine plus Dave Hier. Baxter Tonrey orchestra provided music as crowds danced past midnight. Canyon resort party south of Dillon and Lima dance similarly drew large crowds with Baxter Tonrey orchestra.
Detroit announces a revolutionary plan to debut the 1934 Chevrolet with knee action through 100 special auto shows in major cities nationwide. The introduction will coincide with the New York auto show opening January 6, led by Chevrolet general sales manager William E. Holler.
Robert Barnett, an art instructor with years of experience, joins Montana State Normal College replacing Miss O Eldora Ragon who is on leave. Barnett graduated from Columbia University with postgraduate work, taught at Lincoln School of Teachers College, and held posts at Oregon State Normal School Monmouth plus school principalships in Oregon. He authored several art booklets and arrived Sunday to begin duties.
Montana State Normal College basketball fans look ahead to a Friday night home game against North Dakota Teachers. The Teachers recently beat Montana State in Bozeman and tour the region with a strong record. The Bulldogs hope to repeat their high scoring style as Gonzaga looms on January 11.
Helena report shows Montana crop value for 1933 at 43 million 459 thousand, up 6 percent from 1932 and 25 percent from 1931. Crop loss from drought heat and grasshoppers cost Montana wheat farmers about 15 million dollars that year.
Mizpah chapter No 13 and Dillon lodge No 16 will hold a joint installation at the Masonic temple Friday night. Star officers elect Ruth Dart and Hazel Tash, with conductress Fratie Stone and secretary Edith Herndon. Masonic officers include Matt Kay, Willard Shaffner, Bert Megquier, Hugh L. McCaleb, George W. Dart, Harris Opp, A A Schroeder, Lorain Spencer, Sylvester Mede, and A A Elliott.
Washington reports sharper farm price increases at local markets with grain leading gains. Grain prices are 111 percent higher on December 1 compared with 1932 due to reduced production shrinking supply. Rye prices drop 48 percent to 55.4 cents per bushel, impacting overall grain value.
Federal Unemployment Relief workers in Dillon report gravel resurfacing of Rife Street on the West side and part of Sebree Street. Helena Street is also improved. Additional projects are planned for winter. Neil Doyle urges adults to enroll in relief courses for unemployed teachers, requiring ten registrants to start. Sign up at the Federal Emergency Relief bureau in the courthouse.
Beaverhead county bonds totaling 11 100 were upheld as valid by Judge Lyman H W Bennett in a district court ruling filed last Friday. The case, brought by ranchers Charles Meine Theodore Nelson and Leslie Staudenmeyer, sought a restraining order on bond sale alleging no budget provision for Caterpillar auto patrols for the year starting July 1 1931. The bonds were part of a 61 681 issue intended to wipe out the front.
A large Beaverhead county delegation attended a Saturday banquet in Butte honoring Frank C. Walker, a former Montana resident now a national figure. Attendees included Denton Oliver James Manafield Representative Joe Metlen Frank A. Hazelbaker George Metlen Dr F M Poin Dexter W B Hartwig J H Gilbert E L Poin Dexter Postmaster Harry J Andrus and Harry E Andrus. Governor Frank Cooney and other state officials were present and a telegram from President Roosevelt expressed appreciation for Walker’s loyal service.
Dillon volunteer firemen and nearby ranchers plan a joint 8 p.m. Saturday meeting at the city hall to discuss financing a pump truck for protecting ranch property. Fire Chief O T Vandegrift notes strong interest and ranchers as far as Armstead want to cooperate in raising funds after the P and O fire showing the department can greatly reduce hazards with proper equipment.
A high school boxing and wrestling event drew a large crowd last Saturday. Proceeds funded gym equipment. In wrestling, Jack Cashmore defeated Arthur Bay in four minutes, Clyde Brown beat Jack Barrett in five, and Herb Wheat topped Jack Hitler in six. all scoring matches ended in draws with several pairs listed as opponents.
