Beaverhead board of county commissioners met January 2 3 1934 with Commissioners Rife Hartwig Jackson and Clerk Baker. Minutes approved bond of county printer Foote reduced to 5000. Road petition by Estella C Husted granted and road aban doned (Continued on page 4).
Joe Taylor leads the junior high honor list for the second six weeks period at the school. John Wedum follows, with Jo Ann Deputy in third. A total of 26 pupils appear on the honor roll with varied weighted grades.
James O Melton of Dillon earned high honors at the state normal college for autumn quarter with an average of three grade points per credit on a 21 credit program. He ties with Hakes Bennett Virginia City William W Chance Square Butte and Bernard W Thomas Terry who carried smaller programs.
Dillon's 1933 fire losses totaled 639 dollars, down from 3,059 dollars in 1932, a drop of 2,366.70. Fire calls also fell from 14 to seven, reflecting a substantial decrease in conflagrations and affirming the Dillon volunteer fire department's efficiency.
Dillon plans a President's Ball at the city hall auditorium on January 30, Roosevelt's birthday, to benefit the Warm Springs Foundation in Georgia. A committee from local organizations coordinates arrangements for the nationwide event.
Grand lodge officers led a joint installation at the Masonic temple last Friday night. Mizpah Chapter Order of the Eastern Star officers were installed by Elizabeth Luebben, with Ruth Dart as worthy matron and T. E. Luebben as worthy patron. Blue Lodge officers for Dillon Lodge No 16, A F and A M began new terms with Matt Kay as worshipful master and George W. Dart as secretary. Deputy Grand Master George W Craven of Butte conducted the Blue Lodge installation. Refreshments followed the meeting.

Sheridan January 5 Sheriff J P Erle seized Charles J Titus and Joe Rebich of Zeigler Springs the operator of a large still near the springs Six barrels of mash and one gallon of whisky found at the still Titus turned over to federal officers for manufacturing whisky without a permit and evading internal revenue tax.
Lincoln Neb A three part program advocated by Secretary of State Harry Swan son aims to aid the range cattle industry. It urges Congress to remove the ad valorem tariff on hides and replace with a 10 cent per pound tariff, remove vegetables from the free list and set a reasonable tariff, and double the tariff on fresh frozen and canned meats. The speaker called on farmers and stock men to pressure lawmakers for action to help the forgotten man in the cattle industry.
Satisfactory progress reported on the Lima dam project as cement pours start. Frank A. Hazelbaker, secretary of the Water Users Irrigation Company, said favorable weather should finish the dam for spring storage. D. A. McKinnon, state PWA engineer, visited the site to review work. Bonds for loans reportedly signed by Interior Secretary Ickes. Annual meeting reelects officers including J H Gilbert and J E Keller.
City Treasurer F. C. McFadden reports 100 driver permits sold by noon. Permits were issued starting Monday and will stay on sale through the week including Saturday. Last year about 800 permits were issued. this year’s total is expected to rise slowly.
The Montana Supreme Court on Monday ruled Deer Lodge must defend in court its actions in drawing warrants and allowing claims after reaching the city’s legal debt limit of three percent of taxable property value. The court reversed a district court ruling to quash and ordered trial of the action brought.
Professor Rush Jordan addressed the Dillon Rotary Club at the Metlen hotel Monday night, critiquing local and state government structures. He argued constitutions are overly long and urged reworking boards and commissions to reduce regulatory excess.
Dillon volunteers and local ranchers met at city hall Saturday to discuss purchasing a pump truck to reduce fire losses on ranches in the valley from Armstead to Dillon. The joint meeting drew a large turnout and covered cooperative efforts and funding.
The Beaverhead Madison National Farm Loan association elected officers for the ensuing year at a meeting in Frank A. Hazzelbaker’s offices. Ernest Orr was named president and Frank A. Hazze lbaker secretary and treasurer. Directors chosen were Orr Hazel baker Mooney Metlen and Hughes.
Diana Rebekah lodge No 42 installed officers at the Odd Fellows hall with Selah Frakes as noble grand and a slate including Della Hartwig Nellie Nelson Hazel Conger Anna Loree Dolly Wright Lilian Conger Mary Jane Rodgers Elma Wright and others. Ivy Taylor and Katie Dean conducted the installation and a social hour followed. Elks from Anaconda will attend a Dillon lodge dance at the city hall auditorium with about 80 guests and prior December hosts included 40 Dillon Elks and ladies.
A Montana law effective January 1 requires motor vehicle mortgages and conditional sales contracts to be registered with the state registrar in Deer Lodge before they are valid. If filed only in a clerk and recorder’s office, the contract may not be recognized, potentially creating risk for both dealers and buyers as lien claims could surface before recording.
Mr and Mrs Elwood Baum travel from Ashton Idaho to bury their young son who died when his clothing was caught in the shafting of a feed grinding machine at Beaverhead Fox farm the accident site.
Information on Montana’s new state income tax shows rates by income brackets from 1 to 4 percent and a 1934 tax based on 1933 income. Exemptions include $1,000 for single or married filing separately, $2,000 for family heads, and $800 per dependent under 18 or incapable of self support.
Dillon Country Club weighs an offer from Robert M. Barrett for a 280 acre tract east of Dillon to host a new golf course. The site, offered free with a two story residence to become a clubhouse, lies just east of the original course and is rock-free. Barrett, elected club director, was thanked. Frank P. Bulger was re-elected secretary.
Figures in Supervisor A A Simpson annual report show 37,831 cattle and 168,042 sheep grazed on 1,200,000 acres in 1932, marking an increase of 300 cattle and 6,500 sheep compared with the previous season.
John Christensen was elected master councilor of Beaverhead Chapter Order of De Molay at the regular meeting last Wednesday night in the Maori temple.
