Beavers Rally Past Purples 48 38 In Final Prep For District

Beavers of Dillon beat Butte High 48 38 in a fast paced game at the Butte high gym with over 200 Dillon fans watching. Charlie Burgess scored 20 points including several one handed shots as Beavers built from a 9 0 start to lead 14 13 at the half. Greutiere added 12 and Edwards 18 for high point butte while the Bulldogs relied on far range shots and tight defense.

Butte Pair Enter Pleas On Burglary Charges

Harry and Pete Burt of Butte were arraigned in district court before Judge Henry G. Rodgers on burglary charges filed by County Attorney T. E. Gilbert. Harry pled guilty with sentence deferred. Pete pleaded not guilty, bond raised from 2000 to 3000. They allegedly broke into the Pheasant here January 5, stealing liquor and money and were arrested nearby by Silver Bow authorities.

Normal College debaters defeat Mines in campus clash

Normal College edged Mines in a debate held in the college auditorium last Wednesday. The issue was whether the National Labor Relations Board should enforce arbitration of all industrial disputes. Debaters included Doris Kane and John Stevens for Normal with Mines represented by Elliott Coldwater and Walter Vanaman.

Zone 16 net tourney to crown district champion

Eight high schools from District 16 enter a noon session at Normal College gym with 11 games to decide who advances to the southern regional in Livingston. St Peters meets Virginia City while Sheridan faces Harrison in the opening round. Dillon plays Ennis in the last game, with Twin Bridges vs Whitehall earlier.

Mrs. Mary Ann Skavdahl wife of John Skavdahl died at her daughter Mrs H L McCalebs home Friday afternoon after a lingering illness She was born in Kirksville Missouri December 7 1858 and came to Dillon in 1898 Surviving are her husband daughter a brother Abe Storey of Missouri and several nephews and nieces The funeral was held Monday at 2 pm from St James Episcopal church Rev H N Tragitt officiating Interment was in Mountain View cemetery

Hundred Cars Spuds Shipped By Firm Here

Beaverhead county certified seed potatoes from Ir vine & Cottom farm near Dillon have been shipped worldwide this winter. Over 100 carloads have been sent from the farm’s large cellar to Buenos Aires and to southern and western states, with plans for shipments to the Hawaiian Islands. Varieties include Bliss Triumph and White Rose, and 35 carloads of Russet await shipment.

Beaverhead High Girls Drill at District Tournament

Sixty Beaverhead county high school girls will provide home atmosphere for eight-team district basketball tournament in Dillon. Before games and between halves they will form the initials of contending teams, lead the chants, and sing the school song. The Beaverhead band directed by L A Gregory will supply music for the drills.

Billings Polytechnic and Montana Normal split a two game series in Billings, tying for the Montana Small College conference basketball championship. Montana Normal opened with a 77 to 57 win over Eastern Montana Normal. The five day Montana tour included a Thursday win and a weekend clash.

Card Party Draws Crowd at Dillon Women’s Club Event

The Dillon Business and Professional Women's club hosted a Friday night card party at St Rose guild hall drawing a large crowd. Twenty seven tables were in play with top bridge scores earned by Mrs Fred Chapman and Ed win Dyer and lowest by Mrs Monte Mathews and J E Kelly. In pinochle Ida Olson and Chris Bay topped the field while consolation went to Mrs Harry Andrus and H G Rodgers. A plant door prize from State Greenhouse and Floral company was awarded to C P Thomas.

Master Salesman staged at Dillon Rotary dinner

A one act play The Master Salesman was presented by Montana State Normal college students during Dillon Rotary club dinner at the Andrus hotel. Cast members Edward Cebull Vic Cushman and Violet Burns were tryouts for Gargoyle club. Student director Ernest Desonia supervised by Miss Myrtle Savidge. Barrett Is Claimed by Illness in Beaverhead County

Martinus Barrett a Beaverhead county resident for 40 years died at Barrett hospital Monday afternoon after a period of failing health. Born in Ontario Canada on March 4 1863 he came to the United States as a boy and settled in the region.

Beaverhead Plane Crash Analyzed By Bureau

The Bureau of Air Commerce explains the Beaverhead county fatal crash on Oct 17 near Reichle. Pilot Joseph R. Polish 25 and his sister-in-law Mrs Rudolph Polish died in a newly purchased plane after acrobatic maneuvers. Investigators cite failure of right wing spars as the probable cause and ban acrobatics in this aircraft model.

Plan for new county high school building discussed at Dillon board meet

The Dillon school board reviewed plans by Montana architects Hugenin and DeKay for a proposed county high school. Principal Orr outlined tax millage diagrams and will attend Atlantic City meetings in March as part of his national education work. Trustees approved a nine week series of public forums beginning April 11.

Ski Club Formed in Beaverhead Area Plans

Enthusiasts formed a Beaverhead ski club after a meeting last week. Temporary chairman T. Lee McCracken named Norman Henry K D Flock E E Hazel and Fred Eudaily to explore a ski slide near Elkhorn Springs and evaluate Birch creek Thief creek Blacktail Horse Prairie and Mill creek as possible sites.

Delegates to represent the Beaverhead unit of the American Legion auxiliary at the district meeting in Helena next month were named at a meeting of the unit. Mrs C M Casterline, unit president, Mrs W F Cashmore, and Mrs T Lee McCracken, were named as delegates, with Mrs Guy Combes, Mrs A S Johnson and Mrs H M Warner as alternates.

The Mining Men of State 10 set August 5 and 6 as fixed dates for their state convention to be held in Dillon. Organizers announce the annual gathering will feature talks, reports, and industry updates from participating mining groups.

Montana Mining Association to hold Dillon convention

Members of the Mining Association of Montana will meet in Dillon on August 5 and 6 for the state convention. William Logan, Beaverhead Mining association chair, announced the plans. The Beaverhead invitation was extended at the 1937 Virginia City convention. Contests in rock drilling and mucking will prize winners daily. Lemhi Mining association members will be invited, with several prominent men from both states expected. Senator Key Pittman of Nevada was slated to attend.

Dillon Boy Named to All American Six Man Honor Roll

Beaverhead county high school star athlete Don Wheat earned a spot on the American Boy's All American six man football honor roll receiving a certificate from the national committee. Two Three Forks players also earned honors and Wheat was noted for football skill and sportsmanship shown on both the six man and regular eleven teams last fall.

Forest Officials Hold Grazing Session in Wisdom District

Regional forestry and grazing officials met here to discuss a grazing survey of the Wisdom district completed last summer. The review featured E. D. Sandving, former Beaverhead forest supervisor, and Orville Sparrow with Richard Gallup, representing Missoula regional grazing office, challenging Supervisor W. B. Willey. A four-student crew conducted field work under Sparrow, aiming to define grazing areas and produce a detailed topo map aided by aerial photos.

Miss Ann Feleys social studies class presented a program honoring the February Presidents. Readings on Washington and Lincoln were given by pupils led by Lloyd Davis Kenneth Welbourne Burlene Shaver Bob Quackenbush J W McCracken Viola Nissen Louis Schmittroth Marian Seybold and Dora Oaks Porter.
