The Beaverhead board of county commissioners met February 7 8 9 1938 in regular session in Dillon Montana. A delegation led by Henry Meine presented a petition for relief and public works amid rising unemployment. The request centers on constructing a bridge across the Big Hole and utilizing Works Progress Administration aid.
The Dillon Rotary club held its annual ladies night with over 70 at the weekly dinner. Guest speaker Mrs. A. J. Lochrie of Butte discussed Montana’s history and natural beauty, referencing early art sketches by Remington Russell Paxson DeCamp and Linderman as foundational. Beaverhead County shows a better fiscal position with a January surplus of 29,191.93, up from 12,555.50 a year earlier.
The cash balance and reduced outstanding warrants boost county funds by 16,636.43 dollars versus last January. All but one fund improved, with General and several others listed: General 20839.81 from 20646.74, Road 1884.86 from 1737.15, Bridge 12504.45 from 9289.79, Poor 7053.43 from 6940.85, High school 3279.09 from 5651.60, Funding bond 17360.61 from 28236.33.
Drawings for the District 16 Class B basketball tournament at the Normal gym on February 24 25 and 26 were made after a meeting of district officials. The eight teams are Whitehall Twin Bridges St Peters of Anaconda Ennis Harrison Sheridan Virginia City and Dillon. Dillon opens with Ennis in the final first round game with two Thursday afternoon games and two Thursday night games followed by the remaining bracket contests.
Floyd Pahnish Frances Picko lick and Ruth Deputy head the semester honor roll at Beaverhead County High School with three grade points. Elizabeth Wilkinson is fourth and Jo Ann Fuller fifth. Additional honorees include William Tower Ruth Jackson Don Wheat Franklin Bayerd Florence McBain Eleanor Thompson June Patrick Howard Morse and others.
Dillon Chamber of Commerce endorses two dam projects in Clark's Canyon for Beaverhead Valley irrigation. Directors back a survey, approve April public forums, and partially underwrite costs. Reports came from the publicity and road committees, with input from John Neal and others.
Wives of Dillon Rotarians attended the Dillon Business and Professional Women’s Club annual International Relations dinner at the Andrus hotel. Miss Catherine Harrington, guest speaker, outlined the aims of the International Federation to support business and professional women worldwide. Dr. L. G. Dunlap spoke on current political topics guiding the evening.
Beaverhead road project gains backing after Dillon delegation tours Great Falls and Billings to interest business men in Twin Bridges to Dillon highway. Fourteen candidates to be initiated into Dillon lodge No 1554 Elks in I O O F hall with drum corps escorts and officers in uniform. nominations to follow. A recent Elks dance at headquarters drew a large crowd.
Billings Polytechnic edged Normal College 35 to 31 in overtime after a 30 30 tie. Wetzel opened with a long shot while Carlisle Baravich matched shots as Poly led 16 15 at half. Kastelitz Wetzel, and Kangas starred as the two evenly matched teams traded baskets in a tight Small College Conference game.
Beaverhead ranked 14th nationwide in 1935 for horse colts under two years old with 2 055 head, while 1930 had 2 848. The county also placed 15th in all horse and mule colts, despite low mule colt numbers. WPA projects in Beaverhead totaled 300 090 82 from July 1 1935 to Dec 31 1937, with federal and sponsor funds split and school districts city and county contributing 46.72 percent.
Dillon country club stockholders meet in city hall council chambers to elect officers and discuss plans for the year. Announced by president J. W. Rees and secretary Miss Glenna Vance. Visitors Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Akin and A. Donaldson of Whitehall were in Dillon Sunday.
Two Dillon veterans Vic Westergard and Paul O Cash received the Order of the Purple Heart at a Beaverhead post American Legion dinner at the Andrus hotel. Westergard was wounded on the Lys Scheldt front in Belgium 11 days before the Armistice. Cash was wounded at Gennes in the Argonne on Sept 29, 1918. Dr R D Curry presented the award after citations by Adjutant.
Past presidents of the Dillon P T A were honor guests at a Founders Day meeting in the training school's primary building. A candle lighting ceremony highlighted the program as leaders reviewed their administrations, followed by a silver tea hosted by Mrs. H. D. Black.
Mrs Thomas E Gilbert is appointed as a member of the National Advisor committee on Women's Participation for Montana for the New York World's Fair next year. Appointment made by Grover Whalen, World's Fair president. Mrs Thomas Walker of Butte serves as state chairman.
The Commerce Department division of purchases and sales seeks bids for a loop antenna system and radio facility building near Dillon. Bids open in Washington on March 1, with parallel calls for Custer Montana and Pocatello locations. Work includes poles, building, concrete, earth work, lumber, steel, fencing, and site improvements. The government provides certain equipment. no additional radio gear is required.
Lindley B. Phillips was re elected president of the Beaverhead Sportsmen association at the annual meeting in the city hall. W M Lloyd was re elected secretary. The board of directors was increased from three to five with L H Smith Paul Temple Pete Westergard Ott Van degrift and William Gleed elected. A letter from the Butte Anglers club noted Beaverhead pheasant release at Maiden Rock pens soon. The group approved a one year closed season on all hunting in the area.
William OConnell, a longtime Wise River district rancher born October 25, 1887 in Elkhorn, Montana, died at his ranch Saturday night after a brief illness. Surviving relatives include two brothers, three sisters, a half-brother, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in Dillon with interment at Dewey cemetery.
Beaverhead county livestock men join western Montana district meeting in Deer Lodge on February 23 and 24. Speakers include Ralph Mercer Wilard Lamphere Howard G Lewis Tom Lommasson Sr J K Wallace Grover Lewis. Dinner guests expected E A Phillips Kathleen Nielson. Transport assistance sought from Bernard Williams.
President Sheldon E. Davis will leave this week for an extended professional visit in the East. He will make one day stops at several colleges and universities and attend the American Association of School Administrators meetings in Atlantic City. He is also listed with multiple associations in New York and Atlantic City and participates in several professional fraternities and societies.
