A man risks his freedom by leaving to lead a cause seen as weak. He might have kept his country gentleman role if he had stayed loyal to the King, but chose action over stability. His uncertain failure shadows his motives.
Beaverhead Commission minutes record the February 6 and 7 regular monthly meeting. The board reviewed reports, approved minutes, and discussed budget items, infrastructure projects, and county services. Officials, including the county clerk, presented updates and fielded resident inquiries.
The Little Symphony Orchestra of Montana State Normal College will give its third annual concert in the college auditorium on Thursday evening March 2. Conductor Miss Frances Robinson leads a program ranging from Vivaldi to Louis Alter with Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony featured. The men’s glee club joins in Ketelbey’s In a Monastery Garden, a string ensemble plays Vivaldi, and Cadman and Alter works are included. Helen Catherine Ballard, pianist, performs Liszt Dance of the Gnomes. Reginald Bittle offers a cornet solo. The concert is free to the public and KGIR will broadcast two programs this spring.
The House sent Bill 207, proposing a 50 percent cut in state land lease rates, to the Senate. Leases may lapse after February 28 and renew at the reduced rate if the bill becomes law. The bill, from the state lands committee led by Rep. Joe Metlen of Beaverhead, could yield larger savings than any other measure this session. The Senate also advanced the Walker-Donovan repeal plan for the eighteenth amendment, with Sen. George M. Melton presiding as debate continued. The article notes a separate measure to reduce salaries for state officers and district judges.
Beaverhead board of county commissioners met February 6 1933 in regular session at 9:00 am with all members and the clerk present. Minutes from the prior session were approved. John E Hutchins of Jackson Montana appointed justice of peace Wisdom township. A petition to change the road over Cornell hill was received but action and appraiser appointments were deferred until funds are available. Conalomis Reeves appeared.
An annual Calico Tea for Barrett hospital benefit is set for Saturday afternoon March 4 at St James guild hall. Women’s groups from all church parishes sponsor the event and each organization will present performances.
The Dillon Parent-Teachers Association marked the 36th Founder's Day with a program by past presidents at the training school. A birthday cake, candle ceremony for the national president, tributes to the late Mrs. T. K. Julson, and performances by the kindergarten orchestra and Choral club highlighted the event. Melissa Minger spoke on citizenship training, with views from junior high and high school teachers.
Dan Sullivan, former Dillon rancher and horse dealer, died in San Bernardino California after a two year illness. He left Dillon a decade ago and worked with his brother at Sullivan Brothers livery barn. Survived by widow mother five sisters and three brothers. Funeral held in San Bernardino and burial there.
Thomas Downing a well known Lima merchant died at Barrett hospital from injuries after falling through an open trap door. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon in Lima. Downing had been a resident of Lima for eight years and was active in local business circles.
Crews employed by the emergency relief board worked all week to clear Beaverhead county roads. Several routes blocked by storms are now open to motor traffic, including the Bannack road. About 100 unemployed men were put to work, with large numbers in the other two districts also employed on road projects.
The Caterpillar Tractor School of the Westmont Tractor and Equipment Co opens at 9 a m Friday March 3 in Missoula with L C Allen and A G Fitzgerald in charge. Dillon stores close at 7 30 p m for city and coin businesses. Washington's birthday is broadly observed county wide. Schools hold patriotic exercises as the firemen host a masquerade at Dillon City Hall with Smithy's Orchestra providing music.
Professor F. L. Foor of Montana State Normal College outlined government currency operations and control regulations at the Dillon Rotary Club meeting in the Metlen hotel dining room. Mayor Hugh L. McCaleb Lambert Eliel and Charles H. Niblack summarized recent trips to Rochester Chicago and Minneapolis. Sam Wilkinson chaired the session.
Melvin R. Stamper of Lima was brought to Dillon Monday by Deputy Sheriff W. E. Barry to answer a charge of non support of his family. He declined to enter a plea when arraigned before Judge Opp yesterday.
Dillon Boy Scouts near end of national week observance at the training school auditorium after weather postponed events. Scout Executive Paul N Campbell of Butte spoke on Scouting aims. Chandler Stallings Jr. achieved Life Scout. numerous merit badges awarded to Jim Redburn James Kelly Billy Bayerd Win Best Peter Best Roy Forrester Charles Lee Tommy Newnes Chandler Stallings Jack Selway and others. Troop 14 received five year award via Scoutmaster L Ott Gordon. wind ensemble performed two selections Pride of Arizona and Royal Palm.
Montana State Normal's Gargoyles present Tillie of Bloomsbury a three act comedy by Ian Hay in the college auditorium. The experienced cast includes Carol Wood Georgia Thorson Floyd Horton Frances Brown Barry Caskin Bill Chance Helen Taylor LeRoy Sands Helen Ida Best Laura Dean Bill Ballard Harry Blackburn Kenneth Kins Charles Martin Helen Nicholson Robert Lowry Myrtle Savidge directs. Nearly 500 names were added to the Dillon electors list since the November election per Clerk Albert S Baker after registration closed. Dillon electors will choose a mayor and an alderman in each of four wards with a city caucus likely next month.
A probate petition for the will of the late William A. Bonnifield was filed yesterday in district court by his son Charles Bonnifield.
William A. Bonnifield of Dillon died Saturday afternoon at the home of Mrs. H. D. Mayfield after about three months illness. At his death he was Beaverhead county's only Civil War veteran. Born in 1847 in Fairfield Iowa, he enlisted in 1868 with the Federal forces as a 16 year old in Company M Fifteenth Kansas Cavalry. He served as a scout and freighter for the war’s duration.
Outstanding program at the training school features an operetta directed by Mrs. Grace Redburn. The junior high show will be staged at the training school auditorium next Wednesday night March 1 at 8 30.
Eddie Hoerning a Beaverhead Auto Sales mechanic was pinned by a three ton county truck as it backed from the company garage. Driver Dell Lloyd was transmitting the vehicle while Hoerning shouted for it to stop. Lloyd slipped on the hitch causing the incident.
The Ben May guild will hold its annual services of praise and thanksgiving at the Presbyterian church next Sunday evening. The program will start at 7 30 o'clock. A feature of the program will be a dramatization entitled Dividing the Dollar. The offering will be for the benevolent work of the guild. The public is cordially invited to attend.
