Shellrock Manor Fire Traces Montana’s First Movie Studio
The 24 room Talbot mansion Shellrock Manor near Columbia Falls burned recently but the Columbia Falls fire department prevented spread. The estate once housed Montana’s first movie studio built by Fred Whiteside and financed by Tom Linden and May Talbot Linden, producer of Where Rivers Rise. The Talbot family, prominent banker James A Talbott, built the estate in 1897 and later donated land for the Montana Soldiers’ Home. The property later housed Anton Hoerner and 33 residents, including relatives, until a trichinosis outbreak from Dakota hogs sickened many and killed a child, prompting state veterinarians to cull the herd.
