The NHE report by deputy state examiner Bruce A. Risley covers Dillon's books and finances. It notes a 1929 tax levy of 15.5 mills, assessed valuation $4,129,401, and total 1929 collections of $50,787.39 with $18,098.06 from taxes and $18,190.13 from water. The November 30, 1929 balance in all funds is listed as ib 858.48.
Miss Sigred Berg former instructor at Beaverhead County High School was seriously injured last Tuesday night in Rock Springs Wyoming when struck by a car. Driver Rar Scott allegedly blinded by a heavy snowstorm failed to see her. Initially feared fatal injuries, Berg was reported to have a chance for recovery.
After a week of unusual activity the local basketball season is nearing its close. The Beaverettes face Sheridan at home tonight while the high school and Normal teams wrap up remaining games. The Mining District tournament heads to Helena next week with Coach Breeden guiding the Beavers. Erickson and the Miners edged the Normal Bulldogs to 34 18, as Vistors pulled away late.
Dillon stores and business houses will close next Saturday for Washington's birthday after merchants' committee action. County offices close as well. Seven additional business holidays are set: New Year's, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Armistice Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. If a holiday falls on Sunday the following day is observed.
HIRteen members of the Dillon branch of the American Air Cadets qualified as pilots at the first meeting held last Thursday evening in the city hall auditorium. Johnny Christiansen won first prize and Frank Hazelbaker Jr. second for best models. Other pilots included Bill Bates Fred Simons Bill Hartwig Harry Colfer Fred Wolfe Charles Osborne Billy Bayerd Ed Simons Walter Spery and Winn Best. Judges were W D Ross Dr H F Best and George Melton commander of the Dillon Cadets. Enthusiasm in the junior aviation corps grows with new members signing up daily.
The Montana Association of County Commissioners urged a legislative inquiry into gasoline prices in Montana and adopted a protest resolution. They also backed county compensation from federal prisoner care, stricter range horse laws, banning cleats on vehicle tires, and a $30 county assessment for association affairs. John C. Brown of Helena was unanimously re elected as association president.
The Dillon troop No. 14 hosted its third annual Father and Son banquet at the Methodist church closing the troop’s anniversary week. Lieutenant Governor Hazelbaker Sam Parker and B J Gunderson of Butte spoke on character building and intercity cooperation. Parker urged a broader intercity program of games and contests with YMCA support for local scout activities.
County commissioners association passes a resolution authorizing a probe into gas rates in Montana. The move aims to review pricing practices and ensure fair charges for residents and businesses across the region.
Helena Feb 15 Two applications for authority to establish motor freight service between Dillon and Wisdom via Bannack and Jackson will be heard before the railroad commissioners in Dillon on February 25. Charles Quick of Dillon and Hans Lauesen of Wisdom seek the same charter for tri weekly trucking service. The hearing will receive route testimony and evidence to decide which applicant gets the certificate.
The state engineer reports Dillon water suffered a temporary chlorine overdosage from a likely failed chlorinator. Investigations included examining the intake reservoir, chlorine apparatus, and tests across the system. After adjustments the chlorine level was reduced and water quality began returning to normal.
Twin Bridges reports 140 orphans aged six months to 15 years under the state board of child protection at the state orphans home, the largest caseload in the home's history.
Dillon's volunteer fire department gears up for its annual masquerade ball at city hall auditorium next Saturday night. The event is a popular community dance and one of the largest of its kind in Dillon.
Sterling M. Wood of Billings, governor of Rotary International’s sixth district, will make his annual official visit to the Dillon Rotary club next Wednesday during the weekly luncheon. Rotarians hope for full attendance. Dr. R. D. Curry chaired today’s luncheon. Thomas E. Gilbert discussed the governor’s monthly letter and the May district convention program to be held in Bozeman.
Fred Woodside, local Chevrolet dealer, returned from the Annual Spring Dealer's Convention of the Chevrolet Motor company in Great Falls. More than 200 dealers, salesmen, and bankers attended the conferences and voiced enthusiasm over business prospects in Montana and Wyoming for 1930.
Donald Light, son of Acting President Lee R. Light of the Normal college and Mrs. Light, is named to Harvard University's Dean's List. The Dillon sophomore ranks high in all subjects, earning the institution’s top undergraduate scholastic honor.
Beaverhead county high school Ag club and home economics department plan a community farmers party in the high school gym Friday Feb 28. Invites all county farmers for an evening of music dancing old time dances and refreshments with J E Border state supervisor of vocational agriculture as guest speaker.
Beaverhead County high school Ag Club hosts Lima High for a rematch next Friday at the high school gym. After a 48 to 19 defeat in Lima last Friday, locals expect a closer contest with a 7 o'clock start for the preliminary and a dance to follow.
Superintendent Charles Henry of the Normal college training school leaves Saturday for Atlantic City to attend the annual convention of the National Department of Superintendence. En route he will visit the Kearney Nebraska Normal school and the University of Chicago. Dr. S B Davis, president of the Normal college, on leave in New Orleans, will also attend the convention where 8000 to 10000 educators are expected.
The Masons will hold an annual Washington's birthday program next Saturday evening at the Masonic hall. Mizpah chapter members Eastern Star Rainbow Girls and DeMolays are urged to attend. Speakers include R B Albright Judge Henry G Rodgers George W Dart and Donald Bayerd. Rainbow Girls will sing and dance. Eastern Star will provide musical features. Refreshments follow the 8 o'clock start.
Glen will host a Washington birthday masquerade ball next Saturday with prizes for best dressed couple and best comic character. Fin's Melodians of Dillon will provide music and supper will be served.
The Beaverhead National Forest reports 1929 sees 3.6 million fry and 43 thousand eyed native eggs planted in streams doubling prior year records. About 40 thousand rainbow trout were distributed by the Butte Anglers Club in Wise River from their Divide hatchery. Species totaled 339 thousand rainbow, 425 thousand Montana greyling, and 2.835 million native trout.
Bob Askin a familiar Dillon rodeo contestant and Pow Wow Roundup regular is held in Phalaka on a first degree murder charge. Accompanied by Alva Askin and Wesley Striker, he stands accused after a coroner’s jury linked Haven’s death to violence. The trio allegedly drank beforehand as their car left the Baker Ekalaka highway amid mud and snow.
