Oil Surfacing Planned for Sixty Mile Dillon to Butte Route

Montana state highway commission plans oil treated surface on 59.5 miles from Dillon to the Butte Anaconda junction near Nissler. The project includes gravel resurfacing earth shoulders guard rails and top course surfacing across Beaverhead Madison Silver Bow counties with bids opening February 26 in Helena. The Dillon to Butte road would become Montana’s longest oil treated highway and a premier inter city boulevard.

livestock shipments drive Dillon's 1929 freight totals

Beaverhead county loaded about 2000 carloads of livestock in 1929 with Dil lon’s exports mainly from agricultural sources. Of 700 cars shipped, 52 percent were livestock, 10 percent hay, 11 percent wool, 2 percent wheat and oats, 11 percent lime rock, and 14 percent miscellaneous. Dillon imported 850 carloads, coal accounting for 35 percent and autos rising.

Helene Hoffman Wins Beaverhead High Extemp Title

Helene Hoffman won Beaverhead County High School’s extemporaneous speaking contest in the school auditorium last Wednesday evening. She will represent the school in the district contest in Helena later this month. Ivie Wentworth took second. other participants were Hiram Brundage William Welborn Alma Olsen Donald Bayerd and Mary Louise Taylor.

Salomon City Men Denied Right to Run Freight Line

ISALMON CITY MEN DENIED RIGHT TO RUN FREIGHT LINE OY C COPE and T R Benedict co partners of Salmon Idaho were denied authorization to establish a motor freight service between Butte and Dillon via Divide Melrose Glenn and Apex by the state board of railroad commissioners yesterday on the ground that the territory was adequately served The application denied yesterday was one of three filed for the same route one of which was withdrawn by the applicant and the other was dismissed by the board for failure of the applicant and the present evidence in support thereof The board ruled that the applicants at a hearing held at Butte failed to present traffic conditions over the route the amount of business available or the sentiment of those who would ostensibly be benefitted by the establishment of the service Opposition to the line was entered by the Oregon Short Line railroad which operates passenger and freight trains over the route by the Railway Express agency which handles express and by the Intermountain Transportation company which operates a 30 passenger bus over the route daily and handles night express

Booster Club Annual Vaudeville Show Crowns Queen

Abel Talbott of Manhattan was chosen queen by student votes at the Normal college auditorium vaudeville. Helen Berry of Sweet Grass acted as maid of honor with Irene Bryan and Margaret Barlow as attendants. The glee club act won best performance. the M club finished second.

Newnes Named Census Enumerator for Dillon District

J T Newnes is appointed to count men women and children in Dillon and district for the federal census. He will cover Dillon Bannack Armstead and surrounding rural areas and begin by enumerating manufacturers and business establishments before the population count.

February Golf At Dillon CC Enjoys Snow-Free Round

Nearly 80 members of the Dillon Country club played at the course south of the city. Greens and fairways were almost bare of snow and the course in good condition. It was the first time since January that local fans could golf. The weather was ideal.

The undefeated Beaverhead County High School Beav erettes travel to Virginia City for a game at Normal gym tonight and host Whitehall Saturday. Coach W. J. Bierrum leads a fast snappy squad that has upset opponents all season. The double header tonight features the Beaverheads boys as the other attraction. Friday night the team goes to Twin Bridges.

Frank Mason of Halewell Jones & Donald Company Boston spent last Saturday in Dillon interviewing local woolgrowers to gauge the season. He is a well known figure among sheepmen and marks the first buyer to arrive this season, whereas previous years saw buyers enter the market in January.

Funeral of Old Time Dillon Resident Held

Funeral for David C. Hoerning former Dillon resident who died in San Bernardino California February 1 was held Friday at Brundage chapel. Rev J D Smith of Grace Methodist church officiated and interment followed at Mountain View cemetery. Son Lester and daughter Mabel Hoerning returned to San Bernardino after accompanying the remains.

Montana State Normal College Bulldogs prepare for two two game series against Billings Polytechnic basketeteers at the Normal gym tomorrow and Friday. Alumni Dance Draws Large Turnout at City Hall

Beaverhead county high school alumni association hosted a Saturday night dance at the city hall auditorium. About 300 residents attended an enjoyable event with prizes awarded to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Schmittroth first, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Cotter second, and a door prize coal ton won by a couple identified as ieee.
