A contract to surface 18 miles of the highway from Dillon to the south has been awarded. The project will oil the路 surface and improve the road between the two points. The award was made to a local construction firm and work is expected to start soon.
A federal state highway project from Dillon south toward Red Rock will cover about 27.794 miles including surfacing with crushed gravel, gravel sub-base, and guard rail works. The contract, under emergency federal aid, calls for snow fence and rail along the entire route with bids to be let by the State Highway Commission in Helena, announced February 26.

Astroth will visit next month. Scouts celebrate 26th anniversary after a week of activities including municipal affairs with arrests. city officials and fire department listed.
Elke drum and bugle corps entertained in royal style at Armstead last Thursday night. It was the first in a series of county town dances by the corps over the coming months. The southern city area and about 60 Dillon residents attended in Gordon hall. The drum corps staged an exhibition drill and a varied program featured Findlay Watson and Mrs Hark Wheat in vocal solos and a vocal duet.
John B. McLaren longtime Dillon resident and blacksmith died at Barrett hospital Monday night after a brief illness. Born January 3 1872 in New Brunswick Canada he came to the United States as a young man and made his home in this community for 30 years.
The winter jury term 6 of district court opened with F M Merrill v Stamper for debt, slated to go to the jury today. Only one case completed last week. The Union Electric Co v Lovell Livestock Co was continued for the term after a jury was selected and some evidence heard Saturday.
Montana Normal's Bulldogs face a slate of games against Idaho teams this week. They meet University of Idaho Southern Branch on Friday and Saturday, then host the School of Mines in Butte and finish with a doubleheader against Teachers College in Dillon. The Pocatello quint leads Idaho junior college play, with Ricks College a comparable rival.
Five Protestant churches reported 374 total worshippers at the Sunday morning hour, the lowest February figure yet. Percentages of increase among the five ranged from about 30 to 111 percent, with some congregations showing gains and others lagging. Ministers’ association notes urge steady church visitation.
A proposed Butte Dillon mail route aims to speed delivery with daily trips by motor vehicle. The contractor would handle first class mail and box delivery without Sunday service. A U S internal revenue representative will aid taxpayers in Dillon March 2 to March 8 at the courthouse to assist with income tax returns at no charge.
Attorney Tom Davis a well known Butte figure and versatile speaker will deliver an address next Sunday evening at the Baptist church closing its Go-to-Church Month campaign. Regular services will be held.
Montana lawmakers react as Senator James Crawford introduces a bill to move fish and game funds under a governor appointee not on the fish and game commission. Crawford says he was asked by several senators to attach his name to the measure and did not know its full details.
E rehearsals begin for the Legion annual minstrel and vaudeville show at the Hartwig Theatre coming in early March. The program features Amos ’n’ Andy in blackface minstrel sketches and six vaudeville acts with local talent and school contributions. The event promises to match the Legion Minstrel’s decade of strong attendance and community support.
En ver Colorado February 15 The United States Employment Service survey for the Rocky Mountain states predicts spring will bring higher industrial activity and more jobs for skilled workers. Agriculture highway and maintenance construction are seen starting on a large scale within a month aiding unemployment reduction. January conditions were generally fair with some unusual strain.
Butte Central edged Beavers 18 to 16 at the Butte High gym in a district opener. Kerr of Dillon failed to score, while Lyons of the Maroons made early baskets before being shut down. Brick Breeden’s fast teammates nearly pulled the Beavers to a comeback in the final minutes.
The Rotary club luncheon at the Andrus hotel featured W. B. Hartwig manager of Hartwig theatre discussing the production of talking pictures. He demonstrated behind the scenes projection and showed film of Joe Bi. Brown.
The Dillon Volunteer Fire Department hosts its annual masquerade ball at City Hall auditorium next Monday night drawing a large crowd. Firemen prepared fully with prizes of 10 dollars for best dressed man and woman, 5 dollars for second best, and 10 dollars for best comic character, with 5 dollars to the runner up. Baxter Tonrey Orchestra to provide music.
