Beaverhead County Montana board of commissioners met for regular session Feb 1 1937 with W B Hartwig Martin C Jackson and Edgar B Rife presiding and Albert S Baker as clerk. The minutes of the prior regular session and the Jan 9 1937 extra session were read and approved as read. The official bond of Norman M Giles clerk of the district court is noted.
Mrs. Faunnie Ann Conklin, wife of Frank Conklin and a longtime Dillon resident since its founding in 1880, died Thursday afternoon at Barrett hospital after a brief illness. Born September 12, 1865 in Missouri, she came to Montana with her parents in 1880 when the Utah & Northern railroad reached Dillon.
Mrs. Kate Laurence eighty seven died after a bathroom fall in Spokane. She was widow of John Laurence and mother of Charley Laurence, a former Big Hole rancher. The longtime Wisdom resident known for courage and cheerfulness died shortly before her 68th wedding anniversary.
The Girls' Glee Club and the Little Symphony perform today for the first time this quarter. Dillon banks and all county offices will be closed on Friday in observance of Lincoln's birthday, a legal Montana holiday. Business houses and professional offices will stay open, and schools will remain in session.
Beaverhead county needs additional gifts for flood relief after sending about $500 toward the $750 quota. Chairman Thomas E. Luebben urges residents who have not contributed to donate, thanking those who already did. A letter to the chairman is cited as part of the appeal.
The Normal team fell 34 to 31 to the School of Mines in a fast paced game. The Bulldogs led at times but endured several foul troubles as the Miners lost two tall players yet held their slim advantage to the final whistle.
Edward E. Hargrave a longtime Dillon resident died Thursday morning at Barrett hospital after a brief illness. Born in Morristown North Carolina he came to Montana about 40 years ago settling in Dillon ten years later. He worked on several ranches and was widely known. He is survived by a sister in California. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from Brundage chapel.
Beavers of Beaverhead High, Class B champions, host Deer Lodge Saturday night at the Normal College gym to seek a rematch after a 17-15 loss at Deer Lodge. Next week they head to Whitehall for district tournament as favorites but upset risks loom.
Beaverhead county high school faculty announced honorary selections yesterday naming Paul Simons as standard bearer of the guard of honor with Ruth Helen Albright and Montana Ferguson as color guards and Joe Brown and Lois Gilbert as alternates.
Sixty workers at the Ermont mine and mill twelve miles west of Dillon in Beaverhead county walk out for higher wages. They demand 5.25 from 4.00 to 4.25. management could not meet terms, and operations are halted. About 35 bunkhouse residents in the East refuse to move amid the dispute. The union seeks affiliation with a national group. A fire last Thursday night caused several thousand dollars in damage to the hoist house and adjacent buildings.
Moderate temperatures over the past week eased Beaverhead river flood conditions as part of the stream was diverted back to its normal channels. The temporary halt in water spread north of Dillon gives crews a respite while continuing to guard the Oregon Short Line bridge and the Dillon-Butte highway amid fears a return of freezing temperatures could worsen damage.
Miss Jean Bishop spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner, recounting a recent world journey. She described transport facilities abroad, noting 18 ships across American, Japanese, English, Dutch and Spanish lines, third class rail cars, universal taxis, and the varied use of rickshas, horse carts, and camels for travel.
The week of February 7 to 12 marks the twenty seventh anniversary of the Boy Scout movement. It opens with a Scout service in the Baptist church and ends with a father and son banquet at the Methodist church Friday at 6 30 PM followed by a court of honor.
Four district court civil suits were continued by stipulation of lawyers. The actions include George B. Conway versus Joseph M. Fabian for damages, D. W. Paddock and others versus Robert Frasier for debt, Harris Parker versus John H. Noonan, and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation versus Ida M. Ebbett. Several other cases were vacated or finalized with judgments. Criminal docket had no cases. Ernest Marchand pled guilty to manslaughter in the Brunier murder matter.
Under the Dillon Parent Teachers association sponsorship a charity ball will be held at the city hall auditorium Saturday evening. Indications point to an enjoyable affair with a prize waltz at 11 and prizes donated by Gosman's Drug store and McCracken Brothers. A specialty dance by Claudia Faust’s high school pupil group is set for 10 o'clock, followed by an old fashioned square dance and a circle two step. Hamburgers and coffee will be served by association members.
Dillon is Montana's second low est taxed municipality with a general fund rate of 17.3 mills, while Big Sandy sits at 15 mills. Despite ongoing city improvements, Dillon has long been among the state’s lowest taxed towns per state board records.
