Thawing temperatures worsen Beaverhead flood threats

Warm chinook breezes raise water levels along the Beaverhead river threatening lowland valley areas. Five homes evacuated including the E. H. Cantrell dairy and residents such as Mary Molleur and J. P. Best as ice jams and rising flows threaten more damage.

Beavers Rattle Class A Opponents On Road Swing

Beaverhead County high school’s Beavers beat Butte High 30 24 at home and 37 19 over Butte Central last weekend. Coach Carl A Ross plans road games at St Peter s and Philipsburg this week as Beaver quint faces three straight Class A foes. The team edged Butte High in a tight first half at the Normal Gym.

Freeman Claimed by Illness in Lima

David R. Freeman 47 a fireman on the Oregon Short Line died at his Lima home Saturday after a lingering illness. Born October 16 1889 in Evanston Wyoming he moved here about 19 years ago and spent most of that time with the Short Line. Surviving are his wife four Lima children his father two sisters in California an uncle in Dillon and an Lima aunt. Funeral was held Monday in Lima with Rev. A W Nelson officiating and burial in Lima cemetery.

Dillon Elks Purple Bubble Ball Planned in Dillon

Dillon Elks have organized a purple bubble ball set for Saturday in the city hall auditorium. Guests from Butte Anaconda Virginia City and other lodges are invited. The committee includes C A Beckler Sol Sabol sky Frank Lasich Paul Stahl Jr Doyle Gordon Harvey Sorenson and Elmo Winn with Baxter orchestra providing music.

Friday sale active on butcher cattle at Idaho Falls

A large crowd attended the Pres ident's Birthday ball at city hall despite cold weather. The door takings reached 90 dollars with about 45 dollars to be donated to a Montana crippled children institution and 30 percent to the national charity. The Idaho Falls Livestock Commission sale showed slight improvement for shipping horses though costs were lower.

The Rev Willis J Loar of First Baptist spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner on Christian art and its significance. He traced origins from the catacombs to fourth century mosaics and noted Giotto and Fra Angelico as pioneers before frescoes.

Judge Rules for Plaintiff in East vs Quick Print Suit

District Judge Henry G. Rodgers rendered a decision Saturday in favor of plaintiff A. E. L. East in the attachment case against Quick Print Publishing company. The ruling concerned a writ of attachment on stock and accounts claimed to be owed to the defendant.

Beaver County High School Honor Roll Leaders Named

Jo Ann Faller and Floyd Pahnish headed the Beaver head county high school honor roll for the second semester with averages of 2857 points each. In the second quarter Floyd Pahnish led followed by Miss Faller. The complete honor roll follows.

Red Cross Thanks Local Donors For Flood Relief

The local American Red Cross committee thanks public minded citizens for funds to aid those destitute by the flood. Local chairman Thomas E Luebben notes special praise for teachers and children of the junior high and intermediate departments of the training school. About half of Dillon’s quota has been reached, with urging for more contributions to reach relief headquarters promptly.

Mrs Sanders Dies At Her Ranch Home In Monday

Mrs Christiana Sanders wife of Edgar A Sanders died at her Birch creek ranch Monday afternoon after a brief illness. Born near Copenhagen Denmark 78 years ago she came to the U S at 16. Survived by husband five children from a former marriage two daughters in Homedale Idaho a daughter in Elgin Illinois and a daughter in Bozeman two sisters in Utah twenty seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren Funeral arrangements not yet set.

Man Jailed for Ax Murder Gets 10 Year Term

Ernest Marchand 49 pleads guilty to manslaughter in the May Hogan alley axe killing of Joseph Brunier 63. District Judge Henry G Rodgers imposes a ten year state prison sentence. Marchand waives time for sentence and is jailed at Deer Lodge after discovery of Brunier's body.

Bulldogs Triumph in Slow-Down Battle Over Eastern Montana Normal

In a tight weekend tilt the Bulldogs rallied from behind twice to edge Eastern Montana Normal School 44 to 36. McGinley and Wetzel sparked EMNS in the first half while Wetzel and Dyche led a second-half burst, giving Billings its narrow victory.

Funeral of Mrs. Thomas Held Thursday

Mrs. Mary Thomas 69 a native of Austria died yesterday at her Dillon home after a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 10 30 tomorrow at St Rose Catholic Church with Rev Father F X Lechner celebrating requiem high mass. Interment in Mountain View Cemetery. Rosary at Brundage chapel tonight at 8. She is survived by her husband and nephew Jack Skender of Butte.

January Coldest in 41 Years in Dillon

Dillon recorded its coldest January in 41 years with a mean temperature of 5 degrees above zero. There were 23 below zero days and five days staying below zero, including two nights at 36 below. The cold spell persisted with no above freezing readings during the period.

Beaverette Team Continues Record String Victories

The Beaverettes of Beaverhead County High School extended their perfect run with a 60 to 2 win over Spencer Idaho on Friday night. They have defeated Twin Bridges Sheridan Virginia City and other foes to maintain a seven year era of undefeated seasons under coach W. J. Bierrum.
