Beaverhead County ranks fifth in Montana for prison population according to the state penitentiary report. Dillon Boy Scouts open their observance with an inter-troop meeting at St James guild hall and plan a week of activities ending with the annual Scout and fathers banquet Tuesday night.
Dillon man Frank Elies is named to a four year term on the state educational board by the governor. Elies will serve as a voting member on the panel guiding statewide educational policy and administration.
Chancellor Brannon resigns his office amid legislative debate. Frank Eliel, longtime Dillon businessman, is reappointed to the state board of education for a four year term starting Feb 1. A. C. Gullidge of Baker is likewise reappointed, known in Dillon for summer college work, as the board activity continues in Helena during a busy week.
Repito Garcia, a laborer with the Oregon Short Line section, was injured when a northbound freight train struck the push car he and three co workers were removing from the tracks near Armstead around 4 PM yesterday. hospital attendants described his injuries as serious.
Montana State college band under Frederick Crouse of Dillon earns high marks and will attend all remaining games. The group likely enhances many college events with its martial music. Band members include Bob Erwin Findling Wolfe Hiram Rodgers Herb Wheat Waldron Boger Edythe Kenison Reginald Bittle Bernice Geisen Ira Perkins Ed Boger Bill Ballard Bob Watson Myrtle Adams Wilbur Gilbert Jr Harry Ford and Joe Smith.
Site selection for Dillon's proposed new federal building moves to the treasury department. Site Agent J E Fitzgerald completed negotiations with property owners and surveyed the local situation, then sent figures to Washington to determine the best site for location and price.
Twenty three students earned places on the Beaverhead county high school honor roll for the first semester as announced by Principal W W Wahl. Helga Anderson Marie Knox Jane Waldorf and Margaret Winter tie for first with an average of four points each. Others on the list include Evelyn Tash Ruth Irion Lillie Anderson Paul Fidler Lulu Belle Gilman Tom Hartwig Dorothy Spegar Dorothy Bangs Rosa Lee Brown Alice Fox Jean Gilbert Arthur Hansen George Kennedy Dorothy Perkins Joe Ritschel Fred Simons Chandler Stallings Frank Tyro and Corinne Willey.
Kins Collins and Company certified public accountants and business advisors, formerly in the Buhl Building, have moved their offices to the United Savings Bank Building. The firm serves business executives and provides advisory services.
William Mitchell won first in the Men's Contract Bridge club first series with a score of 49 810. Warren Selner was low at 28 017. Miners enjoyed a holiday Feb 1 as I B Mining expands output. The mill will run two shifts and new ore from the Golden Leaf level was opened last week.
Beaverhead county high school Quill and Scroll chapter held a ceremony in the school gym. Genevieve Albertson of Montana State Normal College led the initiation of eight new members: Helga Anderson, Dorothy Caverly, James Doyle, Isabell Houghton, Laura Hudson, Lillian Lane, Cecile Morrison, and Alice Peterson.
Harold H Hanson, once a well known city resident, reports from Milwaukee where he is largely bed-bound after a two month stay in the Veterans Bureau hospital. He describes the facility as wonderful, housing about 2,000 patients and totaling around 3,300 people including staff and patients, with construction cost of one million dollars a decade ago.
Albert Poe, 13, of Lima, is at Murray hospital with a broken leg after riding a calf. He expects surgery to reduce the fracture. He says riding is easy but getting off is the hard part. He may try again, per his father.
A sudden northern blizzard battered Beaverhead county overnight, blocking roads and causing suffering with no serious casualties reported. Temperatures fell from 40 above Sunday afternoon to 10 below Monday morning and 31 below yesterday, with a few routes open, cars stalled, and a rescue wrecker trapped in drifts. William Lloyd suffered frostbite after his Dillon post office run, while Harold and Mrs. Murray failed to reach their ranch, as trails vanished. Continued on page b.
Leo Davis and his orchestra will perform at a dance and road show at Dillon city hall tomorrow night. Earl H. Roe arranged the return engagement, with net proceeds to the Modern Woodmen drill team. Admission is 6 and 25 cents. dancing is free.
Dillon banks will be closed Monday February 18 to observe Lincoln's Birthday as per Montana law that moves a Sunday holiday to the following day. The Lincoln birthday has been legally designated as a state holiday for several years.
Dillon MT Montana Education Association unit holds regular meeting at primary building with talks by Pres Sheldon K E Davis Supt Charles Henry and Miss Violet Eastman. Musical program presented. 26 pupils named on junior high honor rolls for third period and first semester led by Betty Jo Jeppson.
A census of Professor R. E. Albright’s social problems class shows 49 students with only two born outside the United States. Twenty one report foreign-born fathers and 15 have foreign-born mothers, with parental birthplaces including Canada England Germany Italy Ireland Austria Wales Scotland Holland France.
David L. Smith, a Dillon resident for over four decades, died at his home on South Atlantic Street after a heart attack. Born in Canada on May 16, 1864, he moved to Dillon in 1891 and managed steam engineering and wheat plants for the city’s public buildings. He was active in the Presbyterian church and the Woodmen of the World, survived by his widow, daughter Mrs. Roy Call of Klamath Falls, Ore., and son Melvyn.
Beaverhead National Forest staff films were shown to Dillon Rotary members at the Hanson cafe. M. Lukeng of the forestry service led the session. A notable film, Back of the Weather Forecast, explained how the weather bureau makes predictions. A second film covered Sheep Management.
The Dillon Elks lodge will observe past Exalted Rulers night at the regular meeting next Tuesday in the Odd Fellows hall. Past Exalted Rulers Terry Browning E L Poindexter and John T Orr will sit in chairs with current Exalted Ruler J Leonard Innes announcing. Officers will be nominated for the next term and plans for the August state Elks convention in Dillon will be discussed. A social session will follow with wives and friends as guests and a music and dancing program planned with refreshments.
Miss Luella Stickney Beaverhead county health nurse completed a home hygiene and care of the sick course given at Bannack since December. She taught 28 two hour lessons on disease causes prevention home sanitation child care and practical nursing while also caring for several Bannack cases over the period.
