Capital News Suit Heard On Bridge Insurance
The Minneapolis Fire and Marine Insurance Company appeals a state supreme court review of a 1938 bridge insurance policy. Atty Gen Freebourn and Sam Mitchell led the board of examiners in buying a 12 million dollar policy for a 120 thousand premium. Governor Ayers opposed the purchase and John M Wheeler sought to block payment. District Judge Besancon ruled the board lacked power to insure highway bridges. The matter goes to the state supreme court on March 5.

Stand ard Oil Must Pay Montana Tax, Court Rules
Montana’s top court unanimously holds Standard Oil Company of Indiana liable for the state chain store tax on service stations leased to individuals. The $1,674 tax was paid under protest after a district court ruled stations not taxable. the court says control via product distribution and advertising makes the sites taxable as a license levy, not a property tax.
