American Legion Auxiliary Hosts Americanism Program

An Americanism and national defense program was held after the Legion auxiliary meeting at Mrs. Ben Davis home. The lineup featured Lincoln and Washington sketches, readings on Americanism, vocal and piano solos, with Mrs. Poole as accompanist and Mrs. D. W. Paddock presiding. A library shelf for Legion materials was announced, with Mrs. R. D. Curry in charge. Rehabilitation reports noted 21 bedside bags and 21 pillow slips prepared for Fort Harrison veterans hospital.

Beaverhead County Commission Regular Session February 1940

Beaverhead County Commissioners met February 5 to 7 1940 with W B Hartwig Archie C Henneberry and Chairman Martin C Jackson presiding. They approved minutes and canceled a 1926 tax deed action returning a 32 percent equity in Section 16 Township 2 South Range 16 West to the state and authorized a deed to Frederick M Bourassa for Lot 4 in Block 10 Stahl Addition Dillon for the appraised value of the lot. A resolution authorized cooperation with the Works Progress Administration up to 2000 dollars from Emergency Relief Funds for the project.

Patriotism Week Set By Dillon Elks

The Dillon Elks lodge plans Americanism week with a special meeting on Wednesday evening February 21 at the Elks home. A business meeting at 8 o clock will launch an Americanism class followed by a patriotic program led by speaker George M. Gosman Montana American Legion commander. The Elks chorus directed by Mrs. Vera Cooke Hazel and an instrumental group under L A Gregory perform, with refreshments served.

Assessor Delivers Tax Talk at Dillon Rotary Dinner

County Assessor Judson P. Best spoke on Taxes at the Dillon Rotary weekly dinner. He traced early simple tax plans as adequate for their times and noted today’s complex system with growing revenue needs. He explained railroad assessments impact Beaverhead County and cited Montana’s high per capita tax and statewide total of 44,955,000, with Dillon having the lowest tax rate.

Bagley pupils form school Senate for student government

Bagley school pupils organize a student government to run playground supervision building traffic assembly planning and lunchroom direction. Each grade selects two representatives to the all school Senate which carries officers elected by pupils Jack Davis is president Dale Dart vice president Isabel Ross secretary treasurer. Officers serve one semester.

Beaverhead local unit schedules a Friday Beaverhead meeting at the new high school with election of delegates and reports on legislative matters. A boxing card in Dillon follows a Dillon Elks lodge meeting with organizers listed. A March dance for Elks and ladies is planned with committee heads named. Local Legion Groups Meet at Townsend Convention

Beaverhead post of the American Legion and the Legion auxiliary held their mining district convention in Townsend on Saturday. Department Commander George M. Gosman and district auxiliary president Mrs Harold M Warner led the delegation and spoke at the meeting and banquet. Attendees included Mr Warner, Mr and Mrs D V Paddock, Mr and Mrs C J Horren, with delegates from Anaconda Boulder Butte Deer Lodge Helena Philipsburg Sheridan Townsend and Wisdom.

Dillon Student Joins National Honor Tau Beta Pi

Mel bourne L. Jackson of Dillon will become a member of Tau Beta Pi at Montana State College during initiation ceremonies for four junior class students. Eligibility includes ranking in the top eighth of the class and judged integrity leadership and activities. Jackson is noted as a versatile musician, playing clarinet in the college band and orchestra and saxophone in a dance orchestra.

Cubs to Play Beavers Here February 17

The State University freshmen basketball team visits Dilton Saturday night to face Beaverhead high in the Beavers' last home game before district play begins February 22 at Sheridan. Star Charlie Burgess, a Beaverhead alumnus and all state standout, leads the Cubs with brother Johnny Burgess among the other key players.

College on Three-Game Road Jaunt

Montana Normal’s Bulldogs kick off a three game road swing at Havre against Northern Montana, then return to Helena for games with Carroll College. The drive follows Billings Polytechnic’s title clinching 34 30 win over the Bulldogs and two victories over the School of Mines.

Yellowstone Elk Remain In The Park

State game officials report the 12 000 head elk herd near Gardiner will not drop as hoped this winter with only 20 days left. Mild snow allowed elk to stay in the park feeding, delaying outside hunting that might reduce the herd to ensure forage for survivors.

Beaverhead county agricultural planning committee met Monday in the federal building civil service room to confer with conservation groups. E. E. Isaacs of the state extension service offered suggestions. Mother-Daughter Party Planned at Beaverhead High

The Dillon Parent Teachers association plans the annual mother-daughter party at the high school gym in March with the theme Pioneers in Montana. Home economics and girls athletic clubs will present sketches and other groups will be represented. a father-son party may be held the same evening.
