Beaverhead County Commissioners Appoint High School Board Members

In regular session February 3 1936 Beaverhead county Montana board appointed J H Gilbert W S Tash and Pearl I Smith to two year terms on the high school board. R M Barrett James N Mansfield and C C Blinn were reappointed for one year terms. Alice C Olmsted and Miss May Sprinkle retained on the examination board.

High School Guest Speaker on Women’s Status at Rotary

Miss Violet Eastman of Beaverhead County High School addressed the Dillon Rotary Club, tracing women's rights from early eras to a vocal present. She cited social handicaps in certain professions, highlighted home making as essential work, noted legal inequities in family property, and described related social conditions, with additional sketches by the Kampus Kadets from the Normal College.

Mrs Roberts Claimed in California

Mrs Margaret J Roberts formerly of Dillon died last Wednesday at her home in Alhambra California after a long illness She was a native of Ohio born 67 years ago She came to the Dillon community about 40 years ago living on a ranch near Dillon Her husband the late William Roberts was a prominent Beaverhead Valley rancher The body was brought to Dillon and the funeral held Monday afternoon at Brundage chapel The Rev J A Meeke officiated and interment was in Mountain View Cemetery Mrs Roberts son William and his wife of Salt Lake City attended the services

Auxiliary Monthly Meeting Highlights February Talk

The American Legion Auxiliary met February 10 at city hall with presiding president Mrs. F. G. Lyon. Helena visitor Mrs. Crockett spoke on tuberculosis. Papers on Americanism and National Defense were read by Miss Stickney and Mrs. O’Leary. A post-meeting program at Mrs. Lyon’s home featured Polish costumes and a flag knowledge contest won by Mrs. Jeppson. Music by Mrs. Nellie Poole marked the holiday observance.

Beaverhead 4 H Club Schedules Dance After Meeting

Beaverhead Livestock 4 H club met Friday Feb 7 at the Hermann ranch with county agent Mr Williams presenting the club charter and noting plans for higher degree charters. Members discussed a March 7 dance and approved Savannah singing as a feature.

A S Gilbert Dies After Long Illness in Dillon

Beav erhead and Madison county rancher A S Gilbert died Friday night after a long illness. Born in Butte June 28 1883 he was a Beaverhead high school graduate and later managed Gilbert Livestock in Madison County. Survived by Naomi Gilbert widow of St Bernard La son Norman 8 Gilbert Jr two sisters and three brothers funeral set for 2 pm at St James Episcopal church with interment in Mountain View cemetery.

Exalted Rulers Night Observed By Dillon Elks

The Dillon Elks lodge held past exalted rulers night at the Odd Fellows hall. Attendees included Terry Browning B L Poin Dexter J Leonard Innes John T Orr BE W Johnson and Francis Gelhaus. Exalted ruler Lee Hoerning opened the meeting and Frank Venable of Butte praised past leaders. A dancing party followed with refreshments by Harold Murray Frank O Keefe and Matt Reis and music by Don's dance band.

Boy Scouts Mark Their 26th Anniversary

Dillon Boy Scouts celebrate 26th anniversary with events across the week. Friday opened with school good-turn day, field day postponed due to cold weather, and Sunday church day at the Methodist church. Prof. Lee R. Light spoke on Lincoln, while a board of review met to advance Scouts. A father and son banquet was planned for tonight at the Methodist church parlors and next Saturday February 16 the regular field day will be held.

Beaverhead post of the American Legion plans a banquet at the Andrus hotel tomorrow night at seven. The post reports a historic membership high as about 100 bonus applications have been filed. Officers will process applications. Lima event postponed by health authorities.

Bulldogs Lose Conference Lead to Mines in Close Loss

Montana Normal's Bulldogs fell 27-21 to Butte School of Mines, dropping from the conference lead after a back-and-forth second half. Normal had led 10-9 at half. Bilant led Normal scorers while Poole and Freebourn led Mines. A rematch is set in Dillon next Friday night.

Miss Phelps to Represent Normal College at MSU Inauguration

Miss Ruth Phelps a senior from Deer Lodge has been chosen by the student activity committee to represent Montana State Normal College at the February 17 inauguration of Dr. George Finlay Simmons as president of the University of Montana in Missoula. She is an honor student active in music dramatics assembly and college life and has served longest on the committee.

A severe cold snap gripped Beaverhead County lasting three days with Dillon hitting a season low of 34 below zero on Friday night. Thermometers across the area reported 28 to 42 below, as the rapid drop left ranchers unprepared and streets thawing at 2:80 p m.

Forger Pleads Guilty Two-Year Term

Monty Holmes pleaded guilty to forgery and received a two year state prison term from Judge Lyman H. Bennett. Holmes was taken to Deer Lodge after arrest on a counterfeit check at Montana Mercantile. The case followed prior convictions. other sentences for distur bi ng the peace were suspended. A rancher, Peter Cook, was taken to Warm Springs for mental evaluation after neighbor complaints.

Monida Merchant Found Dead in Butte Hotel

O J Smith aged 65 longtime Monida merchant was found dead in his Butte Grand hotel room from a gunshot wound. A suicide note to hotel owner H W Bal­ter stated he had nothing to live for and asked forgiveness. Coroner Duff said the wound entered the mouth and penetrated the skull. a revolver lay nearby. No inquest will be held.

Rancher Andrew Shutte Dies of Heart Attack Near Dillon

Andrew Shutte a prominent Beaverhead valley rancher died suddenly at his ranch home about two miles north of Dillon from a heart attack. He was 51 and had lived in the community for years. He leaves former wife Lucy Spehar four stepchildren and two brothers in Michigan. Funeral services were held at St Rose Catholic Church with High Mass by Rev Father F X Lechner and burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

District Tournament Set for Twin Bridges

Seven teams compete in the Class B district tournament at Twin Bridges on Feb 20 21 and 22. Contenders include Whitehall Twin Bridges Boulder Ennis Virginia City St Peters Dillon Lima and Harrison or Sheridan based on season records. Beavers of Dillon and Whitehall are favored per comparative scores as Dillon enjoyed an easy path.

Dillon Women’s Club Plans Friday Emblem Dinner Event

The Dillon Business and Professional Women's Club will hold an Emblem dinner at the Andrus hotel dining room next Friday evening. The meeting will be run by the membership committee led by Luella Stickney Myrtle Hale and Ruth Kelly. A candle ceremony will be featured.
