Christmas programs unfold across Dillon churches with Sunday school children taking part. Presbyterian Church hosts a Dec 20 service with Reverend T J Simons leading sermons, organ preludes and hymns, anthems, and prayers as part of the Yuletide observance.
Dry summer caused 56 fires in Beaverhead National Forest with 802 acres burned, 621 on forest lands. Nezperce fire on Salmon forest stretched 2000 acres, threatening Big Hole timber. Total damages to forest lands reached 2343 dollars and private lands 397 dollars.
The Dillon Rotary club heard Rev H N Tragitt of St James Episcopal church speak on the Christmas Spirit and its upward outlook. A quartet sang carols including Mrs W G Gilbert Mrs F D Willis George Bott and Dr W H Stephan with Mrs W F Cashmore at the piano. George M Gosman chaired the meeting and Harold Blinn of Washington State College attended as a guest.
County Treasurer Bertie Mathews reported Beaverhead county’s November taxes yield a state share of 20 007 05 dollars sent to Helena. The Greater University fund received the largest portion of the state share, with total county contributions to that fund at 8 603 75 dollars. Compared with last year, totals show declines in most funds, notably General fund fell from 14 041 45 to 6 879 42 while Educational bond and sinking decreased to 2 887 97 from 3 333 85.
J. D. Brandenberg traveled from Lima to the county seat on Saturday for an unspecified errand or civic matter.
State Fire Marshal William G. Brooks urges extreme care with Christmas trees amid holiday season risk. Do not place near heat sources, secure base, brace top, burn trees after Christmas, avoid storing in hidden spots. Do not use lit candles. use only electric lights with proper wiring.
Holiday rush hits Dillon with 75 sacks and five packages from depot to post office on Monday. Incoming and outgoing mail peaked early week. extra clerks and parcel post window opened. Stores report higher holiday business with extended hours through tonight and tomorrow night.
A new group named the Association of Woolmen Established was formed at the Beaverhead county courthouse. Roycee Cornell of Dillon was named president, Andy Williams of Alder vice president, and Howard Morse of Dillon secretary and treasurer. The body aims to protect sheepmen’s interests across Beaverhead Madison and Silver Bow counties and will hold its first annual meeting January 16 at 2 PM.
Golden Bobcats, Montana's famed team of the "wonder" era, meet the Dillon Merchants at the Normal college gym Saturday night. Coach Brick Breeden leads the Bobcats, with Cat Thompson and the Ward brothers in the lineup. the Merchants, former Beaverhead high stars, hope to challenge them after a 79 26 victory over Lima Independents last week.
Tom Sweet suffered a severe injury after a crank incident on a Monday and died from the resulting gush of blood.
At the Beaverhead county courthouse the regular monthly court of honor awarded merit badges to Leonard Baird Tommy Newnes Tommy Luebben Melbourne Jackson Billy Bayerd C W Stallings Jr George Webster and Willard Trey. Winfield Best Frank Nay and Charles Lee earned advancement to second class Scout. The awards were recommended by the board of review last Tuesday.
Illin training school pupils donated time and generosity to fill the state orphans home in Twin with toys for Christmas. The effort showcases student kindness and community spirit as the holiday season approaches.
Sheridan hosts the Montana Flyer championship shoot next Sunday with Dillon and Sheridan Gun clubs as sponsors. The event uses live birds and clays with the money division run under the Jackrabbit system.
Hundreds of Dillon students return home for the holidays while teachers join families nearby. University of Washington students Hope Mathews Jane Herndon Ed Simons Jean Ballard Georgia Mellen Wilbur Squires plan Christmas visits. Howard Hazelbaker will spend Christmas with his uncle Lieut. Gov. Frank Hazelbaker. Donald Bayerd Roscoe Cornell and Hiram Brundage arrive from Seattle as university students.
The Dillon Choral Club presented a program of Christmas carols under Mrs. W. G. Gilbert direction on the Short Line depot lawn last Wednesday evening. A large crowd heard anthems such as It Came Upon a Midnight Clear When the Crimson Sun Has Set Good King Wenceslaus The First Noel The Coventry Carol O Little Town of Bethlehem and Silent Night Holy Night.
